If it's a well designed combo, it has a built in high pass filter matched with the speaker's range right before the power amp to avoid this danger. Of course, I wouldn't count on every manufacturer to do this and with separate amp and cabs, there's no way for the amp manufacturer to know what the cabinet used will actually handle :)

To be clear, I wasn't questioning your use of a HPF pedal. I was just speculating as to why you didn't hear a difference with and without it. I'm not trying to tell you what to do or not do.

No worries. Just reiterating to all the safety aspect. I feel HPFs are all the rage right now, but people don't always know the safety reasons. They're just "tonal magic" right now for many people I feel like. To me, an effective HPF SHOULDN'T affect your tone.

So this just came in the mail the other day: a Hilbish Designs Night Destroyer preamp.

I will say this is now my go-to piece of equipment for dirty sounds. And the clean sounds, given a reasonable signal path, are more than respectable to boot.

And, as you would expect, the Red Fang Sunn beta bass sound is all there.

I gem heard people say that preamps can also generate damaging frequencies, and to put HPFs in the loop for that reason. I don’t know how true it is, but it makes sense, especially given the differences in amp/cab combos as @YawningJorin mentioned previously.

I wish I had the cash for one, looks awesome! Been on the fence of flipping my 360+ preamp/DI to fund one...

I have been wanting to try one of their heads forever. Everything they put out seems great. Are you running it into a power amp, effects loop, or into the front of an amp?

For testing, I used the line-out through my ADA B500B power amp with 2x10 and 1x15 cabs. I also ran it through a G-K 200MK keyboard amp with the line out as well, and it was surprisingly vicious.

I am going to have to try it through one of my heads at instrument level, but I don’t really intend to use it in that manner for now.

@lucas303 - just got PD-7 #2. Found one online seemingly minutes after somebody slashed the price - scored it for $30! This thing may end up replacing my HM-2 AND B3K. It sits perfectly between the two of them, and works in the same scenarios. So I can cover the same ground and have a smaller board. Win/win!

What have you all been up to lately? I was off work this past week, and spent time woodshedding and cleaning out excess gear. I feel my space is less cluttered and more focused now, so hopefully I can use time more productively and actually PRACTICE!

So, I finally went and got a set of strings and re-strung a bass BEAD after filing out the nut a little. If I have a complaint, it's that the B still sounds "spring-y" compared to EAD. It might be just the high end response in a new set of strings that I'm waiting to die off, or it might be just that it's my first experience with a set of Rotosound Flats. And advice on this? I can accept answers from "live with it or get a pitch shifting pedal" to "just wait" and "buy these super solid core strings". I'd almost be more wiling to deal with floppy sounding rather than spring-y sounding.

I have almost no experience going below C. But yeah floppy isn't bad, is there just not any definition or attack on it? Spongy like?
