I'm one of the outcasts in the Ric thread. Maybe I can help? I own a few. I really like the newer stock Ric pickups. They are pretty hot and sound great imo. They can be had used as takeoffs for about $75 apiece-ish.

For a replacement neck pup the Nordstrand one seems pretty popular. Supposedly sounds like stock w/ more output ie louder.

The natural one on the right? I bet two stock Ric neck pickups would sound great in there. They are the same pickup as the bridge basically just configured for different mounting style. And to get more output from them some folks put neo bar magnets on the bottom to make them louder. Or try neo bar magnets on those ones to make them louder for more thump. I can confirm it works well.

My 4003 sports a Rickenbacker HB-1 (like a HiGain but darker, louder, and less noisy) and a repro bridge pickup by Classic Amplification. And a DiMarzio strat humbucker in the mute cavity.

Generally pleased with all 3.

I wouldn’t call myself an outcast from the Rick club, it’s still where I spend most if my TB time. It’s definitely like reading a headache sometimes, and very rare for an actually new topic of discussion to come up, instead of just rehashing the same 3 or 4 (one of which is “these crazy kids and their unlistenable music! Al who?”)

I wanted to write some krautrock to try out using augmented chords to modulate between keys. Did not quite turn out as expected (kind of Snarky Puppy-ish in parts), but it is what it is.

Really liked the bass tone I got though, MIM Geddy Lee through a Bluebeard with tone and fuzz at minimum, a little compression via an Empress comp, straight into Reaper.

The rest is a combination of EZ Drummer, Sub 37 and Modal Skulpt.

At least the drummer and I are 100% continuing on in some form or fashion. Part of me just wants to say frck it, bi-amp and go duo mode. If I am adding a guitar, I'd like to add a guy/gal that can sing too [so I don't have to sing all the time or at all if they have abetter voice than me, not that I set the bar too high lol] or a separate vocalist and guitarist.

I wrote half the songs, and all the vocals and lyrical parts. So we still have a full set worth of songs, so there's that.

Our now ex-guitarist was fantastically skilled player. Personality-wise we got on ok enough. As long as I didn't talk politics, or any of his tinfoil hat conspiracies. I think the age gap might not have helped. He was 50 while me and the drummer are both late 30s. Different generations, maaan.

I'd go out for a beer with him for sure, but the drummer and I were a bit more chill than him. The covidmania lack of gigs, etc got too much for him. He basically got tired of waiting for things to move.

Ouch :thumbsdown: I hope you find a new guitarist soon, BTW don't give up in any case... Even being a duo can be interesting, it's quite a challenge :)

As for practice space misfortunes, I can relate :thumbsdown: I had my practice space right in the basement of my office, so that at 5 pm I was already playing... like EVERY DAY, when I didn't go to work at some client's office. I didn't even have to go out of the building. It was too perfect to last. This year the company I work for was in deep $h!t so they put that office on sale and moved its headquarters in a grim industrial zone 5-6 km away from there and 10 from my home. And I don't have a car. :thumbsdown: I'm going by bike now but I don't think I'll go to play "every day" after work like I used to :atoz:
