Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

For the first time in my life I'm listening to Stoner music. Why? Some guys in my area are starting a Stoner band, and they sound like they might be fun, so I thought what the heck, and I just applied.

So I may end up a legit member of this thread. Hold your breath!

But with which bands did you start with?

In other news! I finally got my six string! I tuned it EADGCF for now, and it's floppy until the new strings arrive and might need a bit of a set up, but I like it!

But with which bands did you start with?

These are the ones they mention in their ad:

I didn't know any of these names! (Except Black Sabbath.) So I started at the beginning. So far I've watched a good portion of a Melvins show. Then heard a song each by Witchcraft, Graveyard and Uncle Acid. Not a lot so far, but I'll get there. Slowly but surely.

I might be losing some of my Doom cred. All my basses, only 4 string, are now in standard or Eb. I have an X Ultra incoming as my main drive. I'm still running a full stack though. Still have and use an Elephant Skin for fuzz and rarely ever play totally clean. Maybe its not so bad after all....

thanks! The scale length is 29.75", so I ordered some Labella Hellcat strings for it.

That's sick honestly. I just started learning that too but with Behind the wall of sleep at the front as well. I think that combined song is starting to become my favorite sabbath song. Although Jack The Stripper/ fairies wear boots is giving it a run for its money.

I try to pay homage to Butler and Claypool both, but wouldn't do justice to their worst on my best day . I'll check and see if there's a vid somewhere of us doing it so I can force yall to suffer the terrible racket I make. If not, I'll get one at our next show. Too bad that's not until March right now.

Into the Void is pretty tough to beat in my book. Same with NIB and War Pigs. I tend to think War Pigs might be the "checks all the boxes" quintessential metal song.

First song that came to mind for me is "Fade to Black." I didn't do any critical thought, that's just the first song that came to mind.

unrelated but i’ve spent the past two weeks trying to teach myself a bunch of Carcass songs and holy hell, they are just unbelievably hard guitar riffs to play at speed.

Yes. Yes they are. Years ago (when I had the time to practice consistently!) I could bust out Heartwork and Incarnated Solvent Abuse on my bass no problem. But neither were easy to learn, that's for sure. I can still do most of Heartwork, though haven't played the whole thing in years. Fantastic band.

How to Test Speakers and Wires

Alright, this is my multimeter. I did a bit of digging, and found out that I can test continuity buy using the "2000k" setting close to the Ohms symbol. When I do that, I get a "000" reading. Three questions:

1. Is that test a real thing, or am I measuring something completely different?
2. Assuming the test is legitimate, is "000" a good thing? The links you sent mention "open", but again, I'm a noob at this.
3. If the speaker is good (which would be nice, I think?), what's the next thing to check? (I hope it's both easy to check and fix!)

Graveyards older stuff is wicked good. Red Fang and blues pills are soo good. Check out long distance trip. Love that album!

Ok. Thanks. That's what my gut tells me. The speaker looks in perfect shape. I have never abused this cab by any stretch either, so I don't think the speaker should be damaged. Any way to test the wires themselves?

Here's a thought - it made the noise before. I have removed the amp, checked the connections and reseated them, and in a quick test, the noise is now gone. However, the speaker itself is still not moving. I did remove the handle to access the innards of the cab, and that hole is in the save part of the cavity of the speaker. Could the speaker not be moving because the air is escaping via the handle hole and now the speaker doesn't need to move?

Good question, not sure. I'd imagine it should still move. Open back cabs don't eliminate cone movement.

To test the wires themselves, if possible, just touch a lead to each end.
