Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I miss this show. Currently binging another [AS] classic - ATHF.

So much unmitigated beauty in that show. My avatar at work is Dr. Weird. I'm still trying to work "GENTLEMLEN! Chop my head off with such velocity that my blood will rocket through my neck and propel my lifeless body ALL THE WAY TO PHOENIX!" into conversation. No success yet.

Edited to add: I have used "Gentlemen! Fill me full of barbecue sauce, because I'm dumb as hell!" in conversation. But that's technically Steve, not Dr. Weird.

Edited to add 2: My hair would totally do that Dr. Weird thing with a little bit of Knox gelatin, too. I'd just need to find a source for a decent, stylish hairrarium.

Same guy that turned me on to Kyuss, if I dare bring up Stoner/Doom music in this thread ;)
I'm trying to get my not-yet-a-band to play some Kyuss. I doubt they'll go for it. :meh:

There's a church around here named the Morning Star Church or some such, and I always wonder if they even understand the mythos of their own beliefs to understand they've named the church after Satan himself.
That's amusing. Maybe go tell them.

On second thought, don't. They'd need a sense of humor for that.

I just need to roast an absurd amount of veggies. I love roasted veggies in my dutch oven, but always make meat as well. Should just go for all veggies one day.

Random tangent - anything named "Morning Star" cracks me up. It's the literal meaning of "Lucifer". There's a church around here named the Morning Star Church or some such, and I always wonder if they even understand the mythos of their own beliefs to understand they've named the church after Satan himself. And if they do, I kind of hope it's a secret cabal of Satanists subverting some poor saps in some odd, wholesome, and yet Satanic way. The possibilities entertain me endlessly.
Real interesting is that technically Lucifer equals "Morning Star" but doesn't equal Satan. Morning Star has been referenced in relation to a king and even big J. Satan is derived from 'the satan' meaning adversary or accuser. In Job, the satan is like a divinely sanctioned tester/tempter. There's no direct link to 'evil fallen angel king of demons' guy.

In fact, the hebrew bible and the christian one both don't agree with themselves or each other on this satan/lucifer fella. There's several other figures mentioned, see Azazel, Samyaza, and Belial for instance. Also fun fact, the bible says very little about the afterlife and even the info presented is not exactly in agreement with itself.

Thers some great scholarly vids on youtube regarding all this stuff. I can make recommendations if anyone else is a myth nerd like me. So, um, Anywho. . . Doom go brrrrr

I am a black coffee every day guy, I try to support some local Colorado coffee roasters, we are spoiled with good ones here but they are all pricey. I have recently had to cut back on any coffee after noon due to it messing up my sleep and making me anxious. Oh guilty pleasure... about twice a month I will get a coffee frapachino from Starbucks made with coconut milk and hazelnut syrup. Oh, man. It is like the best coffee milkshake.

I like black coffee but been drinking flavored coffee without anything added. My wife got me addicted to this bones coffee company out of Florida. they are like the voodoo donuts of coffee. One of my favorites has been from dusk to donuts. its a sugar jelly donut flavored coffee.

No whataburgers in my part of Michigan. I dunno if they're anywhere up here. I do have an A&W nearby, which are otherwise rare.

Rallys is great gig food. There's one across the street from this place we played back when playing in buildings for other people was a thing.

Yeah Rallys is great for those late nights! That A&W is near Sanilac isn't it? I lucked out and there were 2 of em I think maybe 3 growing up in Lansing, but I think 1 is left. Surprising I work right by an A&W so I get a chance often. Theres a rad drive in somewhere in North Lansing called nip n sip. That place is killer.

Big myth and history need here, big fan of mythical Thor and Odin, been trying to think of a good name for a guitar (for my prototype) from Mjolnir "the grinder" is the best I got.

@kleinenenten agreed Rally best, followed by A&W for normal style fries. Though Big Johns competes with Rallys since they're similar but waffle fries. Haven't had Big John's in forever. Best steak and onion sammy.

I can't stand coffee regardless of who makes it. I do enjoy Timmies breakfast sandwiches and the tea though. the rest if the menu is garbage.

Yeah the sandwiches can be good. Round here is hit and miss at each spot, but that coffee is so bad!

How about Valaróma? "Valaróma is the name of Oromë's horn, which could be heard above all other horns, and when the Eldar heard it they knew the hunter was once again pursuing the servants of Morgoth Bauglir, or Melkor."

This has been a fun recent technique development.

When I was in high school I started learning to "pluck" with 3 fingers (index, middle, ring) a la Geddy Lee. While the speed was never needed after learning YYZ, it helped with general stamina whatnots so I kept at it. Ive always switched between fingers and pick, moreso pic w heavier stuff obvs. It was relatively easy to switch between fingers and pic w my maple necked franken fender, given the gap in the neck pocket on the upper horn side, I'd just shove a pick or 2 in there for holding/easy access. My newer aluminum necked PJ doesn't have this gap hence no easily accessible pick holder. Its naturally happened over the past month that Ive began holding the pick between my thumb and index when not in use, and using my middle and ringer fingers accordingly. Been a fun development and has made things massively easier. Do with this what you may.

Also, we're kicking our other gtr player out for being a flake and smoking crack....like actually. Hilarious, seemingly absurd and sad. But I'm glad he's out as he's a massive flake and doesn't add anything irreplaceable.

That’s an interesting idea. I sometimes switch by holding the pick with my ring & pinky fingers against my palm.

Hehehe, I have no pride there. My first album purchased with my own money was Styx's Paradise Theater. Even that was too heavy for my elementary school classmates when it came to "record day" in music class. Borrowing my older sister's copy of British Steel for the same purpose went about the same way, we didn't get to hear a full song of either before it was pulled.
I saw JP on the British Steel tour with Scorpions on their "Animal Magnetism" tour, and get this, Def Leppard's first tour of the U.S. A great tripl e header at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, PA.

Lol, I'm old.

Never even heard of Big John's. Color me intrigued.

No, I gotcha. There's really no consistency in the Bible. I went to Catholic school for years and started seeing the gaps in middle school. I realized early on that it didn't add up. Didn't realize Satan/Lucifer weren't identical, but it's been a looong while since I've looked into the stuff. Regardless, the Morning Star Church" cracks me up every time I see it.

Forgot to toss this in here. Great sound and can get glitchy in that semi predictable, but random enough to work perfect way. Things got tons of balls with or without the sub octave, unity output is at the equivalent of 2 lol

About Us - Big John Steak & Onion

I think its a local Michigan chain, mostly Flint area.

Never had anything but the steak & onion with or without cheese. Their "red sauce" which seems similar to Arby's but 10x better and more like a ketchup, hot sauce, steak sauce mix, is so damn good and they'll cook it in with the meat. That takes the cake. In the last 10 or so years they started doing waffle fries that are basically a waffle version of Rallys.
