Thanks, never knew this. As much as I like them, I've never tried playing one of their songs.
I'm comfortable with B-E-A-D. Was a C standard guy for awhile. I like B so I can still cheat some non-doom E standard riffs.
Anything lower and the strings and tone get too mushy for my taste.

I need to expand my avenues for finding new music (right now I rely almost exclusively on Bandcamp notifications from bands/labels I follow). Does anyone have good blogs/sites you can recommend? Doesn't have to be just metal.

if you like psych, garage, krautrock mixed with a little stoner and doom then follow these guys.
This is pretty much exactly my experience. I'll downtune my 4 stringers (up to a whole step), but when I do it to my 5 stringers, the A is just terrible. Can't stand it.

Not really blogs, (and please forgive me for stating the obvious), but do you use iTunes or Pandora???...
For iTunes- A lot of times I find myself listening to the Metal station which they pretty regularly update...As result-A lot of new Metal bands come thru the rotation (lol-“New Metal”, not “Nu Metal” just to clarify)...Insert your own Scott Pilgrim joke here bc I looked for the meme on the “New New” joke that Young Neil makes in that movie, but couldn’t find it (seriously how is that movie quote not a meme???)...
There are also Doom Metal (and other Metal sub genre) playlists out there for iTunes...
If there’s an artist that comes on there that you like you can start digging into their catalog to see if there’s other stuff they’ve made that you also like and at the bottom of the artist page it lists similar artist...Multiple stations on there too so not just Metal per se...(Plus you can download albums to your library...Can’t tell you how many albums I’ve pulled onto my phone using iTunes)...
I have the pay option for Pandora and it’s SUPER useful IMO bc if you find a song you like you can like or dislike it and over time you have a really kick @$$ station...
I haven’t tried Spotify, so I’m not sure how to compare the two, but between no commercials and a radio like experience I really love Pandora (plus their basic package is like $5 a month for unlimited music and you can always skip the song if you’re not in the mood to listen to it without removing it from your station)...
They have stations by genre on there, but just putting in an artist name is enough to get you going bc it will pull similar artists...
Its a bit bumpy at first as it figures out what you do and don’t like, but I feel like they have a really good algorithm if you stick with it long enough bc eventually it weeds out the stuff you don’t care for...
At this point I’ve been using it so long that it almost never plays something that I don’t like or something that’s off genre (at first you might get some random stuff, but if you thumb it down eventually the algorithm learns your preferences)...
I have found some really obscure bands on there and then it usually turns into a Google search for me to find out more about the band (and bands like them)...
There’s definitely still good music out there still, just gotta know where to look...

for bandcamp I also follow some genres, and listen to my music feed regularly. I've discovered some nice new bands this way.
+1 for iTunes. Their metal playlists are quite well curated and updated regularly. I like the Breaking Metal (what's hip and happening) and Flesh Blood (new bands) playlists
I've only ever used spotify and youtube for music. I've got friends that use last.fm, but haven't tried that myself yet

I love bandcamp for purchasing and maximizing the amount artists get if they aren't near me or have their own site for stuff. Besides just listening to stuff from an album I buy or want to, I don't really explore on bandcamp. I mostly use pandora and people like stonedmeadowofdoom on youtube.
Channels like KEXP are great to find bands to spin off from on YouTube. They're how I found Ceramic Dog, which is sick. Almost an evolution of punk IMO.

Yeah, I always have kind of thought of it like turning your 4 string into a quasi 5 string bc you would treat the top two strings like a 5 that’s tuned to normally tuned to BEADG, but without the G...

When y'all use non-standard tunings, do you communicate w/ band members saying the actual note values or do you pretend you are in a standard/drop D tuning? For example, you are in C-standard bass and you play the 3rd fret on the C string. Another band member asks "what note is that?" Do you say G or D#/Eb?
the fret never changes names, that's our rule. 5th fret E string is always A no matter the tuning.
I say it’s G if we were just talking about playing. When I talk song structure or something is when I use the actual note. I guess because I started playing in standard and never really broke from that visual process. When thinking about the key, I usually think of it in terms of a scale and go from there.
When we had a guitarist it was a mix of both. I usually just gave fret #s the guitarist usually called them by their E standard note value. Since it's a duo now, I don't have to explain riffs or notes to anybody.
Also, got the Marshall Mosfet 100 fixed up and used it at practice yesterday. It's clearer and 'bitier' than the Peaveys. I like how it compliments the Quilter side. I am just using the clean channel on it. The drive channel sounds pretty good on its own but I don't like the way my dirt pedals interact with the amp's drive. The drummer commented that he liked it as it had more definition to him.
For what seems the first time in months, I got to play my 700RB-II today. Glorious. Even better with my Pharaoh Supreme. How I've missed bass and dirt pedals...
Speaking of tunings, once we start our band back up our guitarist wants to switch from E standard to C# standard. Not sure how I feel about it since I only have my 5 string Stingray at the moment. I could get a lighter string set and tune the B string up to a C#. Ideally I would just find a 4 string to dedicate to that tuning but that might be a while from now. Any advice?
Nope. Never had to tune down more than a full step. Lower than that, I feel that the string gets too floppy for my preferences. Any reason why he wants to re-tune?
