Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Had to look up flowers on the wall, my minds too fried to really think, but I sense some pretty deep poopie in those lyrics. But send the Earth into a death spiral.
Hmm, the Statlers were my mom's favorite band, so I knew those lyrics by heart. I can't discern the lyrics to Funeralopolis, so I had to look those up. That's a kind of tough call. The EW song is abstract, the SB song is pretty specific. One is a single person's situation, and the other is apparently a whole world. The personal vs the epic.
I'm still leaning toward Funeralopolis being more despondent, but FotW's music is in contrast to the depressing situation presented by the narrator, which leads me to think that he's not just trying to make us feel better about their situation - they're in denial of it. That kind of gives the latter an edge, even if it's a bunch of music I'd never write.
Lord, I would have never considered this question without this place.
Well, I was just feeling like Funeralopolis still had the will to fight, but Flowers on the Wall is just resigned.

Meanwhile, first gig with the new Dunable Thunderclapper. Different than my usual Spector and Dingwall, but I really had fun with it.

nice write up and music sounds great.
On an related note, but absolutely no offence meant, I know why it happens, but reviews of pre-releases annoy the crap out of me. Don't tell me about music I can't listen to.
That's a great point, that's the feel that I had that made me hesitant to name Feneralopolis the clear win. Scope for sure seems greater, but yeah not totally given up.
I got home yesterday from a road trip out to California to spend time with the Giant Sequoias and Redwoods. I'd never seen them in person before. Absolutely incredible and no photos can do them justice. Really inspiring trip overall, too. Doom content: "Into the Void" is the perfect doom song and will never be equaled or topped. Prove me wrong.

No, this was my buddy's bass. I traded him a G&L Matador for it. I think he bought this one from Dunable some time back. He has since gotten two more (a Jeff Matz model and an R2), so the trade worked out for both of us.

Calaveras State Park, Hendy Woods State Park, Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve, Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Tall Trees Grove, Lady Bird Johnson Grove, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, the incredible town of Ferndale (make sure to go to Mind's Eye coffee shop if you're ever in the area), and a black sand beach near Ferndale that I had all to myself for an entire day. Also a brief side-trip into San Francisco where I went to Amoeba and checked out Golden Gate Park. I stayed a night in Redding on my way back but I didn't see anything appealing about that town.

I was honestly a little worried about them. My buddy lives in NJ and I'm in New Orleans, so he had recorded some sound clips. Single coil sounded good, but the humbucker mode just sounded like it was destroying the recording interface. However, it is quite useful in person. They are big loud pickups. Single coil mode calms that down of course, but in my loud band they blended in nicely. I have used 35" scale Spectors and extended scale Dingwalls in my band, and every time I tried a P bass, etc., it did not work for me. The Dunable being 35" scale has a tight low end, but definitely a bigger sound than the other basses. Going just neck, you can get a pretty good P bass type tone. I played it with both pickups in hum bucker mode for our gig.

Just a phone, but a little taste of the tone.
Geezer's riff during the verses is one of his best. It's really tough to consistently nail all the hammer-ons and bends, and most bass players just don't play it properly.
I personally like "Lord Of This World" a little better though. The swing Bill and Geezer get into in the verses... phew!
