Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Bongzilla guys were masked up until they hit the stage, if I were on tour, I would do the same. Only about 10-15% of the crowd masked up. I wasn't but I'm vaxxed
To be clear, I was referring solely to my own preference for myself. I'm not saying anything about what other people should or shouldn't do. I'm not opposed to discussing those things, but the S/D thread doesn't seem like the right place for such a discussion.

I’m a voracious podcast listener- especially if they’re deeper dive and music related. If anyone else is in the same boat I recommend checking out “The Rigs of Dad Prodcast.” Not a typo. He interviews some interesting and eclectic folks along the way. Notables are Jon Nunez from Torche, all three members of Russian Circles, and the drummer from Clutch.

No, I got ya. I agree with ya, as I'd have a hard time headbanging and drinking beer all night in a mask. Haha. This venue has followed every state mandate to the letter.

I'm all about RoD! Anyone have other good recs? Here are a few others I dig, maybe not for ever guest though... Metal Matters, Songwriting Malpractice, Talking to Ghosts (lots of Flenser bands), 100 Words or Less, Scott's Bass Lessons, Groove Podcast (from notreble.com). I Try to do Rock'n'Roll Beer Guy because he gets great guests, but the conversations don't usually do much for me.

I loved it.

Sorry, I meant to reply to this earlier. I loved that movie, too. It has just the right type of black, deadpan humor.

Yay! I'm hoping against hope that I can watch it tonight... If all pans out, it'll be a great evening. Grilling some dinner, chilling with the kid, topped off by "The Death of Stalin". We'll see how it goes!

I can't wait to get out to some live shows, jealous of all that made it to any.

I WISH I had an original Gonk or Meatbox. Sadly, RI Gonk and no Meatbox... I've actually thinned my herd of DOD considerably. Most of the excess pedals are gone except my absolute favorites, the ones on my boards, and some one-offs for effects I like but can't justify getting rid of only to buy that type of effect back again for a higher price. But my days of having two identical DOD boards of 15+ pedals AND various DODs on other boards are gone.

And you're seriously tempting me with that Hulk info as well. Been a while since I've looked, but I was kinda hoping it was off-puttingly expensive. I just don't NEED one - I have no use for that sort of low end!

Honestly, though extremely limited experience with the original, I think the reissue is better. Sounds great and I way prefer being able to tune the ring freq.

I feel ya, I've thinned the herd a ton too, keeping the same. Just on the board or forever keepers. I'm just glad that a lot of em and especially a lot of the reissue/recent ones are real affordable. They do sound great even without being super refined.

Been debating on flipping my meatbox for the hulk.

I think Fathoming Heavy is excellent from some metal/doom/less mainstream stuff. He’s had a couple guests that I thought were bad interviewees, but it was no fault of the host. The one with Mike Scheidt is great to start.

I also love “I’d Hit That” - started as a drum centric podcast but expanded to just musicians of all walks who make their living on the road or in sessions. I really like the sense of humor and weirdness that the host is willing to bring to the table. Sadly, it’s defunct as of the last couple years.

Honorable mention to “Let There Be Talk” and “Everyone Loves Guitar”. The hosts both strike me as an acquired taste, but I dig them and they do long form without the typical, boring interview questions.

Affordability is one of the main reasons I started collecting them. They're actually considerably more expensive than a few years ago when I started - I picked up most of my DOD for $30ish each. Then, I realized that many of them were pretty fantastic and held their own against much more expensive boxes. Then, I just got silly with it. I think I had over fifty DOD boxes at one point.

I'm going to the Phish shows this weekend, and these will be my first concerts since March 2020.

Have fun man…It felt GREAT to get back out there and listen to live music with other people…

As much as I’m an introvert and enjoy playing on my own or watching concerts online, there’s nothing quite like standing up for like 5 hours drinking over-priced domestic beer and shelling out 40 bucks for a band t-shirt…

Thanks! \m/

Yeah I didn’t see a lot of masks at the show I went to either, but one of the primary reasons I got vaccinated was so I could go back to concerts without any issues if they made it a requirement…

I’m trying to not get my hopes up to high, but my Wife and I are supposed to go to a Metal festival this Fall to celebrate our ten year anniversary and sure enough they are requiring proof of vaccination to get in…(I can’t say I blame the concert promotion company I might add…I’m sure they are worried about the legal consequences if they don’t…

And agree with you about masking up until you’re on stage bc if I was a touring musician I would probably be extra cautious as well especially with all that traveling…

Thanks! \m/

Still sitting in the basement, mindlessly noodling on my bass, through the ancient Korg Pandora Bass, watching whatever foreign monster movie I find with the TV volume near zero. No jamming, no band. My fate is sealed. Well, until I get motivated enough to slog up the stairs. Just wallowing in apathy right now. But, it's not a bad time. Keeps me from the massive crime spree I was planning.

Lol-Dude, that sounds like a GREAT way to spend an evening IMO…

My bass practice room in our basement is practically a sanctuary for me at this point…

It’s mostly covered with band flags and I’ve got a few lava lamps and black lights down there…

My ideal Friday night usually involves going down there and playing some Master Of Puppets and then smoking a J afterwards while I listen to this album:

Random open “poll” (lol-without a vote button)…

I was listening to this album last night for whatever millionth time:

Which got me thinking…As much as I love that album, which would you pick for them if you only got to pick one…

That album, or this one???:

Deceptively hard question IMO…

October Rust was their first album I purchased…Coincidentally it was a cold rainy night in October the first time I heard that album…Still remember buying it at Best Buy and putting that CD in my Discman later that night and falling asleep to that album…

That being said - I feel like Bloody Kisses has a stronger back half (Blood & Fire was also on the Mortal Kombat soundtrack which is how I “discovered “ them)…

Just curious which of the two you would pick if you could only pick one of those albums…

They made plenty of good music beyond those two albums, but those two are their masterpieces IMO…

Weather where I am definitely does not feel like Fall quite yet, but inevitably I find myself listening to them at this time of year…

Doesn’t seem possible, but it’s only like eight weeks til Halloween…

Thanks! \m/

Alrighty there cool kids, I have a movie suggestion, and warning. Watched "Nothing Bad Can Happen" last night, and it is a great movie. That said, it is a very heartbreaking story. A tough watch, and so very sad. In German if you're curious.

In bass related news, I was doing my thing, noodling away, and man, my left hand is killing me today.

Not doom,of course, but really digging the new Iron Maiden. If you are a fan of their stuff since Brave New World, I heartily recommend it.
Ooh, I do like some of their post-Brave New World work, but I'm not feeling this one.

IMHO, Only number 5, 6 and 7 are a bit Maiden-level. The rest is just... boring? And the mix seems to be off. Like the rhythm section is hidden under a safety blanket

Bongzilla

One of my Bongzilla shots from their gig at De Helling (Utrecht, Netherlands), 2 July 2018. Good memories.

Yesterday she told me she wants a divorce.
We were married 25 years a week ago.

To be fair, it is not a complete surprise, we have never been able to make it work as well as we hoped. We stopped trying long ago.

I can see us staying friends, and the kids never suffered from our difficulties. They've always had two loving parents, and that won't change.

I feel weird because so many things are going to change in the near future, and I am very sensitive to change. It feels kind of detached, as if my feet aren't touching the ground. Good thing I managed to get myself to go for a run, so now I can sleep.

Band rehearsal tomorrow morning, and I bought a new cab today that I'll bring. So I can make a good noise and get stuff out of my system.

Thanks for reading.

I'm sorry, Instrumentalist. I went through a divorce in 2019. My situation was a different, but the results are the same. While it was a slow, hard process, it gets better! I can tell you that two years on, I am closer with my children than ever, I have a sense of levity in my world (I'm no longer caring for another adult), I am in a relationship that is resentment free and is sooooo much more reciprocal, and I have the ability to explore my own interests unhindered. Take care of yourself, no one else is going to.
