Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

The absolute coolest headstock shape IMO:

(Though I'd prefer headless every time.)

Probably would look a bit out of place on a vintage bass, but I do appreciate the creativity on those…

Thanks! \m/

Wassuyp, y'all? Spent 4 days in Las Vegas working a trade show, so been out of the loop.

To catch up, any bass Trujillo plays that isn't a Tobias is just wrong.
I like 2 + 2 headstocks the best, with the 3 + 1 in second place.

Welcome back…

…And I may have just come back from a VERY nice vacation shelf, however I can’t say that I’m not at least a LITTLE bit jealous that you got to spend four days in Adult Disneyland even if it was for work…

Hopefully you got at least a little bit of time to walk The Strip and people watch (I’ve been going to Vegas off and on since 1994 and that never gets old IMO)…

Changing jobs probably means I won’t get to go back to Sin City for quite a while which is kind of a pity bc I’d like some more Ink (have managed to get tattooed every time I’ve gone since 2016)… :-(

At least it feels like I’m inching a bit closer on getting my Wife to at least consider eventually relocating there…

Probably still a long way to go on that one, but a guy can dream…

Thanks! \m/

Welp, after a LOT of consideration and holding out…I finally did it (caved maybe a better word)

Fender MIM P bass ordered today…

Will hopefully get it sometime towards the middle to end of next week…

Also ordered some strings and pickups and new pick guard for it because I’ve got plans for that bass…

Lol-Sadly talking about plans just made my mind go straight to this:

…And before anyone asks-Nope, my mind has not worked linearly in quite a while which is why I have a bad tendency to make random pop culture associations and asides that often have little or nothing to do with the subject at hand…

On that subject-I’m pretty sure that my brain at this point in my life is mostly song lyrics, band personnel, Simpsons quotes, and Futurama quotes…In fact, it’s probably at least 40% Futurama quotes at this point…

ANYWAY…(Pardon the digression and the random Dark Knight references)…

Yeah, we’ll see how that bass works out, but zero buyer’s remorse after hitting the send button on that one…

Think my enthusiasm might have freaked out my spouse just a bit, but that’s always a win in my book if it did…

Thanks! \m/

Totally understand where you’re coming from on the 2+2 headstock comment, but I’d argue that this picture would be less effective without the ascending machine tuners:

That’s a lot of tuning machines in a straight line for one picture (amongst other things that one could argue is wrong with that picture)…

So yeah, I like a good pointy or shapely headstock myself, but for some reason my brain decided that it would seem weird to see one in that picture…

I did however briefly kick around getting an ESP/LTD Surveyor ‘87 which is what I’m pretty sure Newstead is rocking in that photo…

Thanks! \m/

Hi all,
I had a new amp arrive a few weeks back (Matamp GT150) and now having two heads am going to try a two amp set up (wet/dry). Is anyone still doing this around here?

My other thought was to invest in a micro pog or similar to see what an octave up does into a second amp.

All for fun and experimentation at the moment and part of me really wants to try and incorporate a Tyler into my set up to see how that sounds.

Anyway, that's where I am on my rig journey. Just interested if it's being used lately, as things like the helix etc almost negate the need but I'm sticking old school with valve at the mo.

I'll be using the same cabs and Di post power section to FOH. ✌️

Congratulations! I hope that bass is going to be what you want it to be (I recall you being on the lookout for quite some time).

Talkbass cliché, I know, but I must admit that there's a lot to love in a (good) Fender Precision. Mine gets most play time (mostly because the neck seems to have been made with my hand in mind; I like the sound, too).

Doom on!

I've been intrigued by the Tyler for a while now. Didn't they recently come out with a new version, or am I making things up? Anyway, report back with your findings!
Yeah same about the Tyler. They do have a new version out slightly enhanced. I'm on dialogue with gigrig about how to integrate it into my set up as it's not straight forward. Will try the clean dirty thing to start then maybe go from there. Will report back with any perceived benefits ✌️

PREACH. Am I actually not alone in loving the sound of flats with massive distortion?

Totally not alone. I prefer flats for pretty much everything these days, and they really are perfect through just about any fuzz.
Flats and fuzz for life!

Also, played around today with the Broadcast as a heavy overdrive/distortion. It has a mean bite!

Thanks…

Yes, I have been pining for that bass for quite a while now…

Originally I thought I wanted an active bass with some EQ knobs, but I’m finding that I never use the J pickup on my PJ and the more I play the more I’m finding I like the P sound…

Also-As much as I love active basses, I sorta understand the comments about how they can almost sound “sterile”…Granted, I would argue that they sound “clean”, but I’m finding I don’t always want that sound…

(***Warning:This gets LONG***)

GAS for that one actually started all the way back around February (possibly earlier) when I started trying to play some songs off of Black Sabbath’s first three records as a “foundation “ for the kind of music I like…

Since I’m a total MetalHead I decided it made sense to start trying to learn songs that inspired other bands that I love…

I feel like choosing to play Sabbath made me understand the Bass a lot more as an overall instrument, but it also forced me to become a better player…

I noticed when I played tabs and tried to play along to songs that I had a really bad tendency to just camp out on the E string and not mess with the ADG strings…

I know that probably sounds kinda stupid, but the E makes the lowest frequency so I tend to wanna instinctively play open E to get a “feel” of the rhythm of the song…

As result I feel like I needed to get out of my comfort zone so I tried to learn N.I.B. (Black Sabbath the song was the first song I ever felt like I could actually play along with after practicing it a bunch)…While I don’t think I can play that song “well” it got me more acquainted with playing on the upper strings…

As result, I found myself constantly coveting Geezer Butler’s sound and gear (which of course was a P on those albums)…

The more I listened and tried to play their songs the more I found myself appreciating that sound…

I then started ramping up my Iron Maiden consumption which was pretty much game over for me on wanting that bass…

Listening to Harris made me realize just how well that bass stands out in the band mix…Some things I read (mostly older conversations on TB initially lead me to believe that a Jazz or a soap bar style bass sounded “better” in a Metal band, but I realized this is not my personal conclusion at all…

I think the final straw/kicker was going to Aftershock Festival…

I hadn’t learned how to play an instrument the last time I went to a Metal or Hard Rock festival so this time instead of longingly whining to myself about how bad I wanted to learn a guitar or bass but also talking myself out of it bc I didn’t have enough time or resources, this time I listened to the bass sounds relative to what the bassist were playing…

For whatever reason I thought that the P bass sounded the best EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. in literally every band where the bass player was playing a P…

I probably wouldn’t have picked up on that had I not been playing and researching instruments for the last year or so, but it was still an interesting thing to listen for…

Granted, I may have been overly judging with my eyes (i.e. visual confirmation bias bc I knew I REALLY wanted one), but I really do feel like the Bass could be heard better when it was a P vs something else like a soap bar or a J…That show really made me want one…

Also-After listening to a bunch of YouTube videos I decided I’m slapping some Geezer P pickups in there & I already have some Steve Harris flats on my kitchen counter that are waiting to be put on that thing…

So…

Long story short (too late) I’m hoping to build me a BFG9000 bass that I can just beat like a rented mule…

You know…A DOOM bass…

Okay…Think I’m done rambling thru this post…

Just kinda excited after researching what I want for so long that it’s actually going to come to fruition…

Thanks! \m/
