Yeah, I agree with you…And to clarify- they certainly weren’t terrible or anything, but it just made me wish they had played more from Blackwater Park in their very short set…

On the upside- It kind of made me wanna go to a straight up/full on Death Metal show which I’m probably gonna try to do sometime next year…

For the record-I am not knocking their artistic ability and I know they are very well respected, but I think watching them made me realize just how much I personally don’t care for Progressive Metal overall…I tend to like bands that offer a straight up @$$ kicking in lieu of musical experimentation…

Bands I love tend to have a lot of order and structure in their songs and while I appreciate Opeth’s creativity and willingness to experiment with certain directions, it’s just sorta not what I’m in the mood to listen to on a regular basis…

But hey-I probably would’ve kicked myself had I not given them a shot live…

Just kind of a…Weird concert for me personally…

Surely, it can be done, but I'm not sure that's a very viable business option, so I'd have to have someone build it for me, and I doubt I have the scratch to pay for a circuit trace and build from the ground up. I honestly had thoughts like "if this distortion was replaced with the PD7 this would likely be the only dirt box I'd NEED for my favorite heavy tones". At the same time, I'm pretty much loving almost all of my dirt through it, so a standalone EQ box makes more sense.

I was doing some experimenting today with the B7K Ultra model on my HX Effects and don't the attack and grunt switches only function when the drive/distortion is engaged?

I saw Opeth years ago. Their talent is undeniable. But for me, it was a "dry" concert experience. They nailed every song they played, but it seemed sterile. The live versions were identical to the recorded versions in every conceivable manner I could think of. If I wanted to listen to the record, I'd listen to the record. Much like you, glad I saw them, and I don't regret it. But I have no interest to see them again. I'd also prefer a more straight-forward assault these days as well, as Opeth's progressive leanings didn't really get the crowd going either.

Been a few days, and I finally have a bit of time. I nearly died Friday night in the tornadoes. Was at a local brewery/restaurant in the middle of nowhere. No real shelter at all in this place, and the sirens started going off. They tell us to shelter in the only place that isn't basically covered in windows or open to the outside. We wait for a bit for the storms to pass, and they open the bar back up, even though the electric was out. Plenty of people still drinking, but I'm just finishing my beer to be safe, and ended up just hanging out for about an hour and a half. Many times, there are updates on the conditions of the road, which is apparently blocked. It's really the only way out of the area unless you want to go at least half an hour out of your way, and that's assuming you even KNOW that route, because most people aren't local(ish) like I am, and the maps aren't being updated with any closures.

So about an hour after re-opening the bar and being told repeatedly that we need to stay because the roads are still closed all around us (one of the employees was on the phone with - I kid you not - Captain Hank, who I assume was local law enforcement of some kind), we're told they're closing, there's another storm about half an hour away, and we need to head home. My wife's friend tries to drive home via an alternate route, the storms hits bad and we can't see AT ALL. Make our way back to the brewery, convince her to join us in my car, and we take the long, circuitous route home. The entire time we are only a car or two away from the rescue vehicles literally clearing the road as we drive. Less than a mile away from the brewery there are dozens of large trees just gone, roadways blocked, and houses simply leveled. Thankfully, by this time, the storm is over and we just have to be patient and get home, but wow. Craziness. We returned to take my wife's friend back to her car Saturday morning and got to see the devastation in the light. It's unbelievable, and we were likely less than a mile from all of it.

Anyway, wild weekend. Thankfully everybody I know was just inconvenienced and nothing more. Hope all of you and yours had a less exciting weekend, and be grateful for everything. You never know when it may be gone!

Glad to hear you're okay! My weekend featured getting a new bass so I ain't complaining.

I mean-Hey, it’s good I got to see them, so not complaining, but I agree it’s annoying when bands try to play everything exactly the same note for note live with no improvising whatsoever…

Worst offender of this (trying to play exactly like the album)-I saw Staind a few years back…

Kinda like a few of their songs okay (mostly bc I remember what I was doing at the time those songs were popular) so I was curious to see what they were like live and they were one of the openers…

They were TERRIBLE live for the reason you mentioned about it sounding “sterile”…

Aaron Lewis just stood there and played the guitar-He might as well have been giving a math lecture or doing his laundry the way he approached “performing” live…

Granted, I wasn’t there for them (it was a festival), but it was probably the most dispassionate performance I’ve almost ever witnessed…You could tell he just did NOT wanna be there…

I get that he has his own solo stuff now and this was around the time he was breaking off to do whatever country music project he wanted to do and probably didn’t wanna be there, but it was It was like “Geez, sorry performing a song is SUCH a burden for you”…Didn’t even really talk in between songs, he just played his guitar and you could tell that he had such…Disdain/contempt for the crowd…

As someone who’s introverted-I “sorta” get not necessarily wanting to attract the spotlight and I’m aware most musicians are pretty introverted, but if you’re a musician and people have paid to see you it’s usually bc they wanna hear you without pro tools, perfect mixing, etc…

Along those lines-Hell, even Metallica still f-s up live some times and they’ve been at it for 40 years, but it adds a certain amount of character to a live performance…Speaking of crowd engagement…EVERY time I’ve seen Metallica it feels like the room or the venue is getting smaller and smaller as the set goes on…Just CANNOT get over how good that band is live…EVERY time I’ve seen them I’ve felt like that…

Anyway, that was a long way to go for that, but I think you get my point…

Glad you made it out okay, I can understand the dread tornadoes can cause, they're so unpredictable you just never know what's gonna happen until after the fact. I've had a lot of friends lose homes, and had close calls myself, luckily never any loss of life. I've been through a few major hurricanes since my time in Houston, but I'll take the hurricane over a tornado any day, preferably neither at all though...

Regardless, good to hear no one close was hurt

For reference, the Elephant Skin is just a standard TFR with a boost in front (not the phat phuk boost - cleaner). So if you want more of a Green Russian with a built in boost switch, go ES. If you want something that's got more clarity and brighter/splattier gain, but less meaty/wooly muff-style lows, go with the PPB. I thought the PPB was less scooped and clearer, but I didn't personally find the sweet spot when I started using the clean blend. Some fuzzes are alright with a low passed clean blend, but this one sounded a bit 'separated' to my ears. If you want to go the muff direction with more options, also check out the Super Russian by W&C. It's got a pre-muff germanium boost, plus some more tonal options with the mids/creamy switches.
