Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

When I was a lad, back before the turn of the century, you could get a T40 for what a set of knobs’d run you now.

I grabbed this sexy beast off of Craigslist yesterday. She's been rode hard and put away wet on a many a night. She needs a little TLC, including two tuners, so I think it might be a candidate for an EGC neck. As one of the switches is already broken, I'm going to rewire the electronics. T-40's have this weird thing where the pups switch from dual coil to single coil when the tone knob is turned up past 7. The broken switch is a phase switch, which is not a sound I dig. I'm going to make the phase switch into a coil tap. For now, I'm going with some basic knobs, the original Peavey knobs are absurdly speedy on Reverb.

Was the lightning gig bag apart of the deal? If so you may have just been a party to the best CL deal of all time!

It's quiet here. So I'll bore you guys with my search of a new bass.

I've put my Gretsch up for sale, and was looking at getting the Jet II, but with the humbucker debacle that LowEndLobster uncovered I'm also looking at different basses.

Maybe I finally cave in and get a Danelectro. Or retry the Höfner.

What's this humbucker debacle? Or is it isolated to the jet II? Is there a particular sound you're looking for?

I've played some rad Danos, even the "cheapo" 90s ones I've played were surprisingly great.

Amp shopping as a bassist is rough. So little chance to try before you buy. Hell, you’re lucky if you can find one gig-able amp in a brick and mortar shop.

That sucks, in MI there's at least a few stores besides GC that have a decent selection. No crazy quantities like guitar amps, but yeah.

I will admit I lucked out running across my first Ashdown though, so glad I bought it.

What's the debacle?

The bass ain't that doomy, but I recorded a stoner opus, as I do from time to time. The bass my Fernandes P-J through a Dark glass Alpha Omega 500 recorded direct. The guitar is my Yamaha AES 820 Drop 6, the best of all possible guitars. I've been mixing a bunch of tracks while I'm waiting to get medical treatment for my trigger finger.

I remember when you couldn't just go down the street and buy weed from a store!

Nice! Was swords to plowshares an intentional Magic the Gathering reference? :)

I have a T-40 with EGC neck. It was not my cup of tea at the beginning. It sounds almost like a guitar. Actually it's a nice instrument, if you are willing to tailor your writing for it. Just to say, it doesn't have much punch, but chords sound awesome (basically the opposite of my other bass).

Shameless self promotion here. We've been working on getting everything ready to roll the last month or so after recording some demos in our practice space. We'll probably go this route for the remainder of the batch of 10-12 songs we've got going before throwing down cash on any sort of studio time. Anyway, it spills into some stoner/psych territory. So this seems like the place to share...

Me too, we released the demo 3 days ago.
We made same as you the recording and mixing by ourselves in our reharsal space (TWICE :blackeye:), it was so draining. Now I would only want to rest a bit but seems like the hardest part is yet to come. :atoz:
I got in touch with some venues to find a gig, but they don't even give it a listen.
We already know 2 bands we could share a gig with, one of which is already an "established" band, but I don't know. All of this feels like talking to a wall. I don't even know to what point it's ok to insist before it becomes counterproductive. I feel so uncomfortable in all of this "public relations" crap.
I HATE public relations, I HATE promotion, I HATE networking.
I feel tired and I would gladly leave all of this to someone else.
