I used to have a Peavey MKIII and 1820 rig (1810 actually, don't know what the change was when they changed the name) and as soon as I started using tube heads the cab turned into a box of farts.

ok so maybe it wasnt the cab being dead then, because when i tested it at lower volumes it sounded fine. the second i gave it any juice it sounded horrendous and farted out everywhere. for all the hype the black widow speakers get i was severely disappointed.

i do wish i had the box back, i bet two legit 18s in that thing would be shaging killer (despite what winSD says).

Yeah, I think it's just certain cabs are kind of dialed in for the heads they're meant to go with. It always sounded fine with the Peavey head, then with my old Sunn Concert Bass, which I used after the MKIII blew up. Then the Sunn blew up and I bought a Traynor YBA200, box of farts immediately. I also tried out a few other heads when touring and out on gigs with bands we were friends with. GK heads sounded fine, SVT made it fart, so I think it's down to voicing and power of the amp.

From the seller, it's had full recones on the BWs & Scorpions. It sounded pretty deep & clean from the limited testing I did at CL400's practice space; I think the F800B will be similar. The Wizard Fuzz sounded good on it.

I should have had my Mark VIII XP there, but the Carvin was already in the room.

I am glad you got to jam a bit through it, and I got to try the Wizard Fuzz. Gave me a ton of GAS for a build from Nick. Love how versatile that pedal is, and how it sounded through my rig.

Garage rock. Wasn't too bad getting out of the back of the wagon.

Peeled the black tape off the metal stripes. Just need to pick up a new Peavey logo to slap on the front. EDIT: got a read on a logo for sale on Reverb. Need the seller to confirm the distance b/w the screw holes to make sure it'll fit.

Not that I need one but I do want to try the Wizard Fuzz at some point.
Keep resisting building a PT JR and keep the PT1 as the main home experement board.
Plan on keeping just the basics on the JR. Tuner, Compressor, BDPG, Fuzz A Blowerbox, Fuzz B W&C TFR.
I have a Gamma Drive on the way from JohnK so well see how it matches up with my needs.

I'd highly recommend the Wizard Fuzz to anyone, for bass or guitar. It's a really versatile pedal and just sounds good with a lot of different settings. I'm also really fond of the Cthulhu Fuzz as well. Less versatile, but the quality of tone is fantastic.

If it is a power question, why would it fart out with the 200 watt YBA, and not with any of the solid states, which one would assume have the same or more power.

It's probably not solely the power, probably a lot to do with the voicing and how much sub frequencies are getting amplified. However, without stepping too far outside my wheelhouse, solid state and tube amps tend to have their power measured by standards that don't have the same context. Besides the fact that there's really no universal standard for measuring the output of amps in watts at all, so it's not necessarily a realistic comparison between any two manufacturers period. It's not like getting the clearance of a pickup truck from the manufacturer, it's more like telling the driver how fast they think you can get from L.A. to New York. They might get it from some kind of tangible measurement and real math, but it's not exactly objective and definitive.

Peak power vs continuous. Not all 200w amps are the same.
Also of note some are high-passed higher than others like the older GK amps. Too much power too low is fart city.

I'd say the second point is the operational one there. When it comes to a watt, it IS a measured amount, but grievously misused/misrepresented/mislabeled by the music manufacturers.

I have the same problem, I've been meaning to pick up a noise gate for a while because of it and a few other pedals. I do use it consistently on guitar though, since I don't have as much of a problem with the feedback. Either I'm playing continuously, cutting out fully or wanting feedback there. There's one Warp Rig song where I LOVE the sound of the Cthulhu on my bass, but it was too choppy of a riff to use, because I would get short squeals of feedback. You can dial back the volume knob on the bass just a tad to tame it, but mighty Cthulhu does not like to be tamed.

Ha, power ratings related to dick measuring is the most apt analogy. That combined with different voicing and amount of HPF filtering in power sections probably accounts for why certain cabs only flub with certain heads on low notes.

Least I'm not the only one. The Demon King is what I was using to gate it but I'm not all that fond of the DK OD tones (least this one) so at this point both are shelved. May ask Aj to mod it for me later.
