Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Anyhoo, did a 2nd jam this past weekend and sorta played a song but it's hard getting a read on this geetarr player. And their in-ears setup needs help, sh1t was all sorts of wonky. I'm feeling MEH all around plus the drive over there is a super sh1t-show for me, wasn't helped much by the singer who didn't want to carpool this time around.
I'm thinking of ditching my Schroeder 1x15's for some tiny Barefaced Midget 1x12's. It's gonna look ridiculous with any of my tube or lead sled heads on top which are huge in comparison.

I'm thinking of ditching my Schroeder 1x15's for some tiny Barefaced Midget 1x12's. It's gonna look ridiculous with any of my tube or lead sled heads on top which are huge in comparison.
I know the pain of the tiny cabs and big heads. The sleds can fit on most 19" cabs, but the tube head needs atleast 22" for the feet...unless I wanna put a cab on its side or head on the ground.
I've just resigned that I need something that can tilt n roll. They aren't tough at all for load in/out, but stairs can always be a little pain.
I kind of miss the Peavey 2x15 I rehabilitated a couple years back. Beautiful to stand in front of with the V-4B on top and flap the pant legs. I hate leaving gear somewhere else unless I know I can go retrieve it anytime I want to and it's not out in BFE.
These itty bitty cabs with neo drivers are crazy convenient, but don't really look the business. They'll have to do because I live in the land of 1000 steps and daddy's back is starting to complain more & more..... Don't get old kids!

My Suicide Cages gig this past weekend's gig was rad! We covered Lamb of God's "Laid to Rest" which was pretty intense to learn. We also messed with Hatebreed's "This is Now" but ended up cutting it. I've been using my Deluxe Precision Special with Nordy blades and a 2-band EQ, Mesa Diesel 2x15 and 1x15 w/ a Darkglass Alpha/Omega 900 for that band, no pedals right now. I may add a delay, but it's kind of fun not having anything, especially for a 30-45 min set.
I also had a sesh with the other groovy/jazzy/avant-garde project on Sunday that went well. I'm thinking about calling the project Lesser Apes. I'm using a bunch of pedals, a few Aguilar GS 112's, and DG MT900 for that band. I will eventually be busting out some upright and synth, but I have been avoiding carrying that much.

So, I went to, naturally, smash down the garbage in my kitchen can to allow for more garbage, and ran the second knuckle of my pinky over the edge of the lid I had pulled off the can of dog food for the Battle Dachshund.
Yeeowtch. It was a gusher.

She is pretty old. Sleeps a lot, loses balance here and there. Still a happy dog, though.

Two suggestions, different price points:
1) TC Electronic Spark Booster. Not the "mini" version, but the full-sized one with bass and treble knobs. Inexpensive, versatile (I have two of them), and does the barely-there-low-gain thing exceedingly well. Pretty quiet, too. And as said, inexpensive; I paid $50 each, new.
2) Broughton SV-Pre. Does the full range of SVT-style dirt, but IMO works best in the low-gain area. Volume to the max, Gain as low as possible, enjoy. Bit pricey and hard to find on the used market, though.
Honorable mention: Damnation Audio MBD-1 or -2. Does the low-gain thing well, and comes with nice sound shaping options like the Deep dial and a dry blend. But personally I like it better when pushed, I even use the MBD-2's +20dB switch, so … yeah. Honorable mention.
@kleinenenten RE Barely There Dirt: I've gotten a lot of milage our of my Saturnworks true-bypass loop pedal with an active blend. It's like adding a blend knob to any pedal. I love all sorts of distortions, fuzzes, drives, and gated pedals cranked but the blend low. Also, they aren't too spendy.
Finally have a big cab again, dang did I miss that massive wall of air feel! Kiddos kept saying to turn it up louder lol! Had it damn near cranked. Couldn't pass up on the deal, just a lot of wear n tear. Speakers and everything that matters is in great shape.
Meanwhile in small cab world, my two Schroeder 15" cabs are gone.......guy offered to trade some Hartke Hydrive(?) 1x12's but they weren't making me tingly enough. 6 heads but 100% cab-less now. Still got 3 combo amps.
I've been looking at and listening to demos of the Barefaced Super Compact and I am pretty impressed, and NO tweeter which suits me fine. Pricey, and it's not really easy to find their stuff used.

My two Acme Low B-2s have been sitting around unused, and with no prospect of using them in anger anytime soon (even on the off chance I had a reason to play outside my house I have a Fearful 15 sub, Orange guitar combo I could use with a crossover, and my sealed 12) I'm thinking about selling them. So I somewhat feel what you're saying @cornfarmer
Can't blame anyone for the smaller cabs, they're great for sure. For whatever reason I just gotta have my amp on my cab.
Honestly if I had the gear to flip that I was willing to let go, I'd probably go for one of those barefaced cabs. That or build my own, if I had the time. The 212AV has caught my eye, but I didn't feel like hauling 2 of em would be fun.
Thankfully I was able to add on and not so much upgrade. Still got my portaflex 210. Love that thing, loud, but just can't move the air that modern or big cabs can.

But can it have multiple blend settings for various pedals? I feel like I'd want different amounts of blend for each pedal...
On the subject of "barely there" dirt, today I received the package of pedals I am borrowing (Li'l Fella and MBD-1). I'm really digging them both, but they are very different feel-wise. The MBD-1 is definitely more amp-like and similar to my Pork Loin tonally and feel-wise, but the LF is also really great for low gain tones. May have to get them both (or at least the MBD-2) sometime! Then I'd likely be set on the "OCD" pedals for a while. I still think my Pork Loin is ever so slightly better than the ODB clone I have, but on my second board with a different amp the differences may be even smaller. I need the space on that board a bit more too.
Speaking of space - I'd likely go for the MBD-2 for space concerns. The original is MASSIVE. I assume the 2 can do all the same tones as the 1, correct? And how big is the 2? It looks MXR-sized or maybe slightly larger to me. I'd love any of your real-world experiences comparing the MBD-1 vs. MBD-2. Thanks in advance, doomers.
