Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Morning! (Well, evening here). On bass front here also nothing new, but in pedal front new stuff is coming. This week I traded my old reverb ( jptr Kaleidoscope) for a Walrus Fathom. The guy was a huge pedal freak, so I also had a chance to try some Earthquaker pedals I was dying to try out. Now I didn't have to pay > € 200 to figure out the Grand Orbiter isn't for me. Now a Phase 100 is on its way to me.

A homie from a former last (good) band (defunct for 1+ years) is pulling up stakes for greener pastures....so this last weekend we got together for one last jam. Was most excellent and it sucks it never really worked out (kids, living just far enough away from each other, and a badass but 100% flakey drummer).

I was taking mental notes comparing this to the other dudes I had recently played with a few weeks ago. Pretty different vibes obviously seeing how the old group was more or less vetted. And I really liked the songs. Nothing really against those newer guys I had 2 jams with, I think I might have to say no thanks because of the time it takes just getting over to their spot.

Got the MBD-2 today. Haven't been able to play with it much yet, but after a few minutes, I know I can get the same tones as the MBD-1 from it. So there's that. Otherwise, I've actually just started to shrink my pedal boards and have removed my "B7KU" type pedals (a clone and an old Ibanez PD7). I think I can get the same basic tone in the mix as them with my MBD-2 or Pork Loin, so I'm just going to do that.

Random question - if you could only have one "flavor" of fun effect, which would it be? Envelope filter, flanger, phaser, or chorus? Debating what to do with my boards as I continue to downsize. If I was really going to for absolute minimum, it would just be tuner, compressor, Noise Clamp, my 4 dirt pedals, and the "fun" pedal into the amp. Then in the FX loop is a noise gate, cab sim and HPF. Yeah, this is a BIG minimum, but I could likely remove the tuner and cab sim no problem if needed.

I just changed my BF-3 for a Phase 100. So phaser here as well. I love flanger, just not on bass and chorus is a bit meh IMHO.

My guitar rig is the dirt/effects side. I'm guessing since my HpF was out of the normal setting + using my wah, which can put out seriously bass-heavy frequencies was enough to cook it. The amp is 200w, Marshall cab is rated for 300w.

Funnily enough, the Peavey cab I'm stuck using is only 100w and I wouldve bet I would kill one of its speakers long before the Marshall.

Wait- I’m a little behind reading the s/d thread, but I thought you were a 1 man pd7 resurgence. Anyway, it’s a multi and it’s big and heavy like a cigar box full of old pinball machine parts, and really begs the question, but the old line 6 fm 4 is my “fun” effect. So maybe envelope or sinff.

I'm a one man pedal lover in general! I have spread my absolute love and devotion for the Pork Loin, PD7, Pharaoh Supreme, Throat Locust, Swollen Pickle, Russian Pickle, Bass Mountain, AND Iron Pig over these boards the last few months. But I'm trying to downsize, focus more on practicing, and maybe even get rid of some things in the near future (to fund more GAS, of course!).

I DO love the PD7, don't get me wrong. I think I even prefer it to my B7KU overall. But I'm aiming for a "less is more" approach lately to make it easier for me to focus on actually playing bass and not tweaking pedals. And in the mix, the grit of the PD7 and B7KU is mostly lost, leaving the "clean" tone to be heard. So if that's what's being heard anyway, I may as well just keep the "clean" tone (i.e. my MBD-2/Pork Loin/OCD) and downsize. The PD7 is NOT going anywhere - I'll be keeping it! But it might also end up on another makeshift board in the future if I ever find a decent combo to scoop up for living room use.

Per my previous question - I was thinking of either phaser or flanger mostly. I don't enjoy them as much as an envelope filter, but I feel they're likely usable in more situations. I'll probably try and mess with them all some time this weekend and see which I like.

Any affordable (like $60ish used?) flangers and phasers you folks like? I have the old DOD versions of the both flanger and phaser, which I love, but am always open to new tones. And I need a second of each effect if I'm to put them on two boards... Or maybe I just put one kind on one board and another on the other. Who knows?

Personally, I'd get an envelope filter with a gain stage I like. For me, that was the Joshwah, which can do pretty much anything from burpy funk sounds to high-gain distortion put through a Wah. Very versatile.

That said, I recently replaced it with my old Earthquaker Devices Hoof v2. For the stuff I mostly play nowadays, an additional dirt option is more sensible than the envelope filter. So now I have my basic, always-on dirt (sounding more like tube saturation than distortion), the MBD-2 for clearly overdriven tones, and the Hoof for all-out war.

I'm in a similar situation. And I have an envelope filter I quite like! The MXR Bass Envelope Filter - which works quite well with all of my dirt pedals. I range from low gain touch of hair (MBD-2/Pork Loin) to medium gain Rats (Iron Pig/Bass Mountain), to fuzzy distortion (Pharaoh Supreme/Swollen Pickle), to high gain HM-2 (Throat Locust/Heavier Metal). And the BEF sounds great for all of them when I get it all dialed in right.

I have one I quite like, I just feel like it's the least used of the "fun" ones overall. My favorite isn't necessarily anything special to many, but I love it and it's beaten out some others that are often spoken of highly. It's the MXR Bass Envelope Filter. It's got plenty of versatility if you like its core tone. If you're still searching, I'd try one of the Source Audio ones. I had their old bass envelope filter a few years ago (forget the name), but it had all sorts of different filters with various parameters. It allowed me to figure out which kinds of filters I liked and then search out those units specifically.

Precisely my situation. But I LOVE Geezer and Cliff and would ideally be able to do that stuff... Of course that requires the coordination to use a wah pedal, which I DON'T have. Last time I tried one I nearly fell into my amp and destroyed half of my rig. So I have to settle for envelope filters...
