My last bit of advice: the "accepted" norm is your monthly payments should not exceed 30% of gross income. I think this is nuts. You don't bring home gross, you bring home net. So, my advice is not to exceed 30% (25% is better) of net income. It may be tough to do in this housing market, but, it's what my wife and I agreed to do, and we have a comfortable mortgage payment.

we're basically at ~30% of my net (base salary, not with bonus), not including my wife's at all, so definitely trying to keep things chill on the payment side. I don't want to be sitting quietly in my house because we can't afford anything else. We like our life and even thou we'll be paying more than 2x what we pay for rent, it'll be a lot more house. We both WFH and having that plus a kid in 1200 sqft has been INSANE over the last few years. we need more space, badly.

Smart man, with a smart plan! 1200 sq.ft. for 3 is a bit tight, lol. My house is 1100 sq ft, but I have a full basement in which to dwell, so that almost doubles my space.

lol my wife has her own office / room upstairs, but my work / gaming / recording desk is IN THE LIVING ROOM so it's always irritating someone who's just trying to hang out while I'm screaming at COD or trying to record without someone bothering me

Heheh, yeah. We bought our current house because in the old house my work place was in the dining room and my recording stuff was in the kitchen/living room. The place I was recording at wasn't only a pain for anyone in the living room, but sound went a long way in that house, and my wife could hear me beating on a solid body electric guitar being recorded "silently" while she was trying to sleep on the other side of the house. Plus, her studio space for painting/printing was quite small.

The new house has all of my stuff in two rooms downstairs away from the living room/dining room/kitchen, and her studio space is 3x the size of the old one. She doesn't even know I'm recording these days unless she walks into the right room. Plus, my room is built into the side of a hill. I have a window, but it's at ground level on the outside. So, it's like a basement or a hobbit hole.

I generally use a Bad Monkey OD but have a black Russian v8 Muff as well. I dislike the mid scoop most fuzzes seem to have in my application but I am also not an expert on them. Bass-specific fuzzes and ods get pretty spendy pretty quick. I’ve been lucky with the Bad Monkey as it seems to keep all the low end intact and I had one laying around when I switched to bass several years ago.

The only new news I have to report is on a distortion and a fuzz that the same ex-roommate loaned me.

On the DOD Boneshaker, all I can report is that I didn't like it very much on bass. The highs have to be set as they are in the pic to make it acceptable. It's an ice pick in your ear, otherwise. I'll have to try it on guitar, but I doubt I'll like it much better.

The pedal in a junction box on the left is a Noise Swash kit, apparently from commonsound.com. He ordered it, decided that he didn't want to build it and sent it back asking them to build it. They sent it back in that amazing case. To quote Douglas Adams, it's similar to having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick. It's a really devastating fuzz, it pretty much makes a Super-Fuzz seem like kid's stuff. It's really easy to get yourself into a sound that's almost un-usable, but still is kind of amazing. Back off from there a little bit, and it's in a new sweet spot all it's own. If he won't sell me this one (and that seems unlikely), I'm probably going to have to buy one.

Well, the one that makes my eyes sparkle and my heart flutter is the trusty Univox Super-Fuzz. But the one that actually gets most of the action these days is the Fuzz War. It's big and heavy, but not in a "LET'S DOMINATE THE MIX" way that the Super-Fuzz does.

I have 2.

Ultimate #1 is a Univox Superfuzz clone I built from a kit from General Guitar Gadgets. It has a tone knob instead of the original's 2 position switch. Thick, nasty, dominating. Nothing subtle about it. Sometimes called an octave fuzz, but that's not really fair, it only has a slight upper octave in there.

#2 is the new to me Joyo Voodoo Octave. I thought it was based on the Octavia, but actually found out this morning it's a copy/adaptation of the Foxx Tone Machine [also heard it's a clone of Fulltone's take on the circuit]. This guy is a true octave fuzz, so playing up on the neck is just amazing. I haven't played it much yet in my band, but It's a keeper. Also found it stacks pretty well with the Superfuzz if it's in front of it.

@Novarocker - I stand corrected, as you had correctly pointed out it was a Foxx clone somewhere up thread.
