Sooo, I went kind of shopping for a video synthesizer to the point where I was asking around on another board about them, and someone who knew I used Linux asked why I hadn't already stared to use the Pure Data GEM module. Well, dammit, I had used Pure Data for audio before (very lightly, just following the examples), and the GEM module was already installed. Just sitting there, looking at me with an expression on it's face like it thinks I'm a baboon's butt. It wasn't right, but it was close enough. The person who suggested it saved me at least 500 simoleons, probably more in the long run.
So, a little over a week ago, I spent all of my productive spare time trying to actually understand this synthesizer that is controlled by a graphical programming language that can also manipulate the bejeezus out of video from random inputs. This video is made form peaks at different levels triggering different effects with the value they generate. I've got a lot to learn about it (hey, I've only been using it for a little over week for video) , but it seems perfect for manipulating/projecting visuals over a band, and I have a projector in the house already.
This was mostly created as a proof of concept to sell my band on the idea, and the hardest part of it was recording it. GEM is pretty great, but it's mostly there for live output. If you want to record it, it doesn't have any really good way to record video outside of a screen capture. Once I had that worked out, it was great. It's a song that I'm pretty sure I posted here about a year ago, but it had no video. Really, I just want to project stuff like this on my band.
