Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I got my Destroyer Fuzz over the weekend and it’s quite the animal. I have rarely heard a fuzz pedal have such a wide range of tones like this one.

Yeah I'm kinda blown away with the range. At first I thought the filters had too much sweep, but I really dig how interactive they are because they're so resonant. What's more bewildering to me is how usable damn near every setting is.

Yeah, I have an original Super-Fuzz on hand and several clones. I didn't think about it before you mentioned it, but I'm listening to a guitar track I did earlier tonight to fool around with the Fett, and it does have what seems like the flavor of a much smoother Super-Fuzz in there. I was running it out in stereo through my Boss RE-20, and the side I stacked on top of the Pessimiser sounds especially huge and Super-Fuzzish (the side going through a Behringer BDI 21 sounds quite fuzzy and nice, too).

When I first opened it and read the name, I thought "hmm, an overdrive pedal?". Nope, it can do that, but at extreme settings all those diodes seem to come into play and it fuzzes right on out. It doesn't quite go as crazy and sputter on fade out quite like the SF will, but it's fade is nice. Looking forward to bashing other pedals senseless with it. Heck it even sounds nice at less extreme settings, might just use it as a preamp in some situations.



Yep, I'm a complete fool for his Star Wars themed stuff. I'd almost feel like a fool for loving his flaunt of Disney's IP, but the pedals really are damn nice. The singer in my last band had a Han-Taun (he's who turned me on to Idiotbox), he'd set it all kinds of different ways depending on his mood, and I can't think of a time it didn't sound great. I keep thinking I'm going to grab one, but I have a Klon clone I never use already. Bleah, I should just grab the next one that comes up on Reverb for less than $100 and decisively end my dilemma.

Haha, I realize I didn't clarify, I was more referring to the SF and BM sound a bit for the destroyer. You are right though, the fett is so dense and bloomy/evolving as it rings out or you play it differently. It is like an SF that's smoother without the rectified like octave goodness. It's that weird untamed but still semi repeatable awesomeness that is so great about a superfuzz.

I think you're spot on with wanting to use it as a preamp and such. It really seems like a foundation or preamp type pedal. Almost like some of the great classic lead sleds that have some special when pushed hard.

Lately, in my quest to actually be a bass player, I've been trying to learn Kasmir by LZ, primarily by ear. Moderately successful. I did have to revert to the YT to see how some of the faster bits were played, in all transparency. So, I got a bit altered last night and was jamming along, having a grand old time, and I realized I felt like I was 15 again. It was an interesting revelation on how music can transport you though time and space.

So... a favorite IP of mine, which is apparently tuned to a favorite song of mine, made by a more than competent builder with affordable prices? HNNNNNNNG. Do any of those ever become regular offerings? That sounds AMAZING.

They sometimes do get made regular production. The Redrum was originally a mystery pedal of the month club pedal, then it went into regular production, and there will be a new version out soon with a drive and a level control.

I feel like sludge, doom, and stoner bands tend to pull the same crowd. I don't even know what we are. We've been likened to early 2000s Neurosis and Amenra and Isis. So assume we are in some area of the post-metal to doom spectrum.

My band has played with punk bands, heavy 70s style rock, stoner, doom, sludge, classic nwobhm style metal, post-metal, death metal, black metal etc etc. Lots of overlap in audience. But Michigan/Detroit has a pretty solid scene of bands playing teh heavy.

We usually book our own shows, is that uncommon for all y'all? Promoter types in this area are usually putting together pay to play gobshite shows. Its easier to contact other bands and/or venues and put stuff together yourself.

It's becoming more common as the scene is growing to a point venues will let you book a doom metal show here.

Holy smoke!. I would really love to hear one hooked up to a bass tuned to B playing against a drum beat at about 65 bpm's.

I didn't mess with the settings much, but it's a fiver and 65 bpm.

Edit: just found out it sounds terrible on a phone. I originally listened to it on my studio monitors with a sub.

I make no bones about relying on tab or YT videos to learn stuff. I might be able to learn things by ear, but with my limited time, I'd rather just let someone else figure something out for me. Occasionally, I can tell when something is wrong and I'll fix a note here or there, but that's about it these days.

And referencing the "15 again" feeling - I 100% agree with that. I've spent a large portion of my summer actively trying to recapture that feeling (you know, but still adulting etc.), and I think I've been pretty successful. It's really come down to a less is more approach. I've simplified my free-time activities to three options most of the time - bass, reading, and movies. I used to read all day every day, and have read more this summer than I have in years. I'm feeling like a somewhat carefree kid again, and loving it. And when I'm not reading, I throw in a movie to catch up on. Really digging the routine so far, and I feel like I'm actually accomplishing things because I'm learning new songs and reading books and seeing movies that I've wanted to for years.

They are behaving for now, I'm pleased to say. The usual stiffness/soreness but nothing over the top. Not sure why, but, am not asking any questions, lol.

I'm buying what you are selling. I've made conscious effort in simplifying and it is paying off in a lot of ways. My routine is work -->dinner-->movie-->bass-->shower & bed.

I feel you on that! I have made a lot of effort to simplify my pedalboard for that reason. And to not go too compact. I'm down to an Eventide H90, 3 drives, a volume and an expression pedal. Though I am considering re-adding something for feedback effects.

Do you have any cool patches dialed in for the H90 that you'd be willing to share? Always looking to see what people have come up with for inspiration, it's such a powerful pedal. I'm barely scratching the surface with it in the loop and an exp pedal plugged in.

There will be many different answers to your question and all will be good based on personal experiences. I tune to B and the method to my madness is to outfit all of my 4 string basses with fiver string sets wich requires a little bit of filing at the nut for proper fit and eliminating the bottom string completely. Im more of a progressive player that uses all four strings and run the entire neck and even with the bottom string missing from the set I still get what I need for the sounds I am looking for. GHS Pressure Wound strings are my favorite choice.

Yep, that's the general method I went with when I decided to string a bass BEAD. Get a 5 string set, ditch the high string, file out the nut wide enough to seat the larger gauge strings, set the intonation, and you're done. I did it to an ESP LTD B-50 that I got for $75. It's been a pretty good bass for that duty, to be honest.

Yeah it turned my heavily medicated Squire P into a giant. Thank you for adding "intonation" into the conversation, that is a very important detail I forgot to mention.
