Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Also, Alex borrowed my 2 OBC115s last night and I was worried they were gonna be blown TF up!

That's awesome! My band, High Gravity Project, played on the bill with Telekenetic Yeti and Pinkus last night in Huntsville, Alabama. We had a blast! We actually did a rendition of the Butthole Surfers' song Who Was in My Room Last Night and Pinkus got on stage with us for a minute. I hope someone took some pics. That's a career highlight for me having been a huge fan of the Surfers since I was a teenager back in the early 90s. Like your gig, the crowd was light though, maybe 60 or so. Wednesday night in a smallish Bible belt town is tough I guess.
That's cool af.

Rad shows guys! I need to get back into doing shows again...

Out of curiosity, does anyone know of a pedal that's a Big Muff with an octave up other than the EQD Hoof Reaper?

Matt at Idiot box has done a couple recently that might be in that territory, or work in it. There's always the devi/dwarfcraft silver rose, but those are expensive af and a muff and superfuzz in parallel IIRC.

Idiotbox destroyer fuzz fits that a bit. I gotta listen back as I'm not really sure if it is a muff, but sure seems like it. Then he also did a range master + green ringer in one (125b enclosure) that you could use with muff of your choice.

Jptr fx has some fuzz + octave, not sure if it's muff though.

Now, I have an Idiotbox Destroyer. I will say it can get close to that sound though not dead on, but it takes time to dial that sound in as it’s very flexible with the filters and can get some very brassy sounds too.

Idiotbox has their annual X-Mas sale going on right now. 30% off of everything with a code. Not affiliated, but I decided to jump on a Blower Box Deluxe since I've been curious for months now, and the code makes it cheaper than the used ones I've seen. Will report back once I have it in my hands!

This is going to be an expensive post.

His pedals are already reasonably priced, sound pretty great (at least the ones I am familiar with), and he seems to be an all around great guy. I'd say he deserves all the money he can get - especially with an amazing sale like he's got going on. This is literally like maybe only the 3rd or 4th time I've ever bought a pedal new, and one of those was also the original Blower Box. Matt's a great guy and I'm happy to support him.

I had an original Blower Box, so I’m tempted. Plus the shirts look great and are dirt cheap.

And that monster fuzz :)

Now, I have an Idiotbox Destroyer.

Do you mean the Destroyer Bass Fuzz? (serious question, I have several of his with Destroyer in the name)
If so, I love mine but haven't used it enough to fit it into a recording yet - and I think you are a lucky man.

Oh, my. I hadn't noticed that one yet. I do believe I have the vapors.

It’s the bass fuzz. And yes it quite the get. It’s a very unique pedal.

100% agreed, I haven't spent enough time with it yet, but recalled it was close enough to the Muff sounds I shoot for. Love that pedal, torn with using that or the heavy weapon right now, wild how flexible it is.

I thought about a shirt AFTER I finished my purchase. Otherwise, I'd likely have gotten one as well.

Hell, give him a shout via email. I've noticed he's fairly good about responding and is real flexible on that end.

If I didn't have self control I'd buy every pedal he makes just to have, as they all sound awesome, I just wouldn't be able to fit em on a board. Through the years I don't doubt I'll end up collecting em all or a lot of em at the very least.

Curious to hear your thoughts on the deluxe. I love how touch sensitive the one in the heavy weapon is. The only thing that's got me a little on the fence about it being on my board is that some of the basses I have need some tweaking to get it the way I want for each. Honestly a nit pick, and I know I'll get over it. Not like I ever switched out basses on a gig. So being a set and forget type, it'd just be a tweak before the gig if I used a diff bass.

In the end, I decided on green. Now, I'll spend several weeks anticipating it being built/shipped. Eventually, I'll forget I even ordered it, and hopefully it will just magically show up and surprise me sometime in the summer.

I am dying to know about this bass? I literally can't find anyone anywhere on the internet talking about these basses anymore. Puresalem still has them up as a preorder on their sight and I wondered if they are out in the world or what's going on.

Ya know, I'm kind of dying to know, too. A bit after they were supposed to be shipped, I emailed them asking about it, and was assured they'd be shipped by the end of September. The explanation was that their production was pushed back due to supply chain issues. It seemed a reasonable explanation at the time, but I haven't heard anything since. I'd thought about it recently, and one of my guitarists had asked about it a week or so ago, and you brought it up. So I sent them an email, we'll see what the answer is.

I mean, I know outsourcing your production is a crapshoot. If someone comes up with a bigger order, but a time dependent payoff, the smaller folks are going to get pushed to the back burner (and who knows, it could be caused by something else entirely). Sucks to be you, and you've got to explain it to your customers. Fortunately, as long as they're willing to deliver on the bass at sometime in the future (hey, I *like* pleasant surprises), I'm not going to starve without the cash. Frankly, I just want to touch the funky thing. So, I'll wait, but I am wondering.

Not really doom, but I've been on a heavy Stereolab kick the last few days (ok the last few decades). I've they're not stoner, I'll eat both of our hats and footwear after they've been prepared properly. I can't really think of anyone to foist them on, so I'll glurge some at you guys.

Seriously, if anyone in my band suggests doing a cover, I'm going to try hard for "Motoroller Scalatron".

And well, Les Yper-Sound because the drums rule (they rule on the whole record). Plus, awesome name. Plus awesome everything else. If I get a chance to be reincarnated after I die, I'm going to be greedy and ask to be reincarnated as this version of Stereolab.
