Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Picked this up when they dropped the price a big chunk. My daughter has been wanting to play my sons mini guitar a bunch and has really started to try and express herself musically. Between that and me being a sucker for oddball guitars and massive pickups I had to jump on it (and shell pink is a damn good color IMO).

Gonna keep it hidden for a bit and see what the lady thinks we should do for a surprise...Xmas, bday, or whatever. Kinda wild how my kiddos keep asking for guitar/music lessons. I'm on the fence, as I could teach basics, done it plenty before, but not with young uns or my own.

Anyway, pretty awesome bass. Especially for the price tag. Plays real well, tons of super thick hot tones. Pickups are real hot, I'm going to mess with height to see what range it can accomplish. Overwhelms my muffs, FF, TB, and most dirt. While not bright or very clear, it doesn't really seem to lack clarity. I've only had like an hour with adjusting setup and playing a bit, but I dig it.

Oh yeah @kleinenenten, the heavy weapon is real impressive. I haven't even moved the knobs from what they were set to yet, but I'm a big fan of the dungeon master and I dig how the parallel mix sounds of the two. I'll get some photos up, but I might have to get this on the board.

How's that Atreides sound? Any tips? I have one, but it seems like I can never get much out of it. I'm thinking maybe my basses are too hot, and it's incredibly weird, even for my tastes. Regardless, I'm keeping it because I'm determined to get some cool tones from it.

Spent my day alternating between playing bass, reading my various nerdy texts, and playing with my kiddo. It was a great day! Not ready to head back to work on Monday...

Major findings from my day:
1. I LOVE Rats. A year or so ago, I don't think I had tried more than one or two, and didn't really think much of them. But now - wow! Loving them for a grindy tone that cuts the mix with plenty of bass. My favorites are still the Volt Thrower and Tremond, but they just sound excellent.
2. My Swollen Pickle can be darkened successfully. Nothing groundbreaking here, but it was definitely brighter than my Pharaoh Supreme. No longer. I'm getting wonderful tones out of all my dirt pedals, and am a happy bass player.
3. The MBD2 and B3K are both excellent for a good high gain, but not over the top metal tone. Plenty of bite and definition, but not excessive (unless you want the B3K to be...). The MBD2 is still my #1 for this tone.
4. As far as epic poetry goes, sometimes too much is too much. I just read "The Song Of Roland", and while I enjoyed the story (and its connections to my own stay abroad in Germany), there was plenty that did not serve the story. I may have to try a new translation.
5. My kid is awesome. We played all sorts of board and card games today, as well as playing some soccer, and it was a grand time. Love that little man.

Yeah it has tons of thickness. Too much as they currently sit, IMO. Honestly outside of the dark shade of the tone, the comb filtering of having em both on isn't far off from that hollow, honky (but even thicker) articulate sound of having a PJ with both pickups on full. I'd say closest proxy would be wicked hot PJ but with tone turned down just on the J pup.

They are way close to the strings, I'm gonna mess with pickup height for sure and see if that brings more brightness and tames the output a little.

Haven't tried em in the mix, but I wouldn't be surprised if it just bulldozes through it. No cutting like stingrays, or sitting proud like a pbass, just straight wrecking ball like an EBO.

I'm a fan, though yeah it is tough to tame in some regards. I finally realized that it gets some awesome sounds but I do have to change how I play it to get more than just one output.

I'll get a closer pick of my settings. Took a lot of playing around with the filter and phaser. The sub I just minimize right now since I have an octave (But the -1 glitchiness is pretty awesome) and if i use the octave I play above the 5th fret at minimum. The phaser I set slower and the filter took a ton of messing around. There seems to be a lot of overlap here and there on the sensitivity and freq. The input signal strength is super critical to the sweep and opening of the envelope. I would barely touch a string to get it to have a real wide sweep until I just found the right signal strength. No doubt the thing is not real straight forward and the speed of the sweep seems to be real fast.

Honestly, I use it for more hectic stuff and brash synthy lines. I've been on the fence for it's use, but then I realize with one step I'm getting like 4 pedals worth of cacophony and find it useful for those bits. If you haven't tried it, it reminds me a bit of the Keeley Synth-1 or whatever it was called. Loved that pedal but could be real difficult and I wanted more layers at times. I think that's why I've kept the Atriedes and not the Keeley (which I still want another someday).

I don't think I'll ever get rid of mine. Feels like something that I'd end up using as a random tool for a track if it ever leaves the board. A "Hey this needs some special sauce" type of thing.

Edit: yeah horsing around with kids for the day is a ton of fun. Good to have those days for sure.

FWIW I just recreated a bass I sold a while ago, basically a VM Squier Tele bass with a DiMarzio DP145. This time I had the original FenderFudBucker to directly compare both pickups. The original pickup was lowered all the way down, on the same level with the pickguard, and it was still pretty hot comparatively speaking, thick wooly & dark. It's cool but not exactly what I want which is why I yanked it, I've got a comparison sound clip somewhere if you wanted to hear it. One of these days I'll find some orphaned discarded husk and stick the FenderBoofer in that and go to town.

The adlib mudbucker names are priceless! I agree, I think fender may have missed the mark on the bass wrhb. They could've made it something a bit hot but way more in the spirit of what the original guitar ones targeted, IMO.

Until half a year ago i would've voted for you. I lived in the capital, so I was quite sure my dead would have been instantaneous.

But I've moved over the summer. Now I have to fear radiation poisoning.

On the plus side, I have a lot more room for my basses.
