Less overpriced than most G3 basses I see for sale in the past year, but still too rich for my blood at the moment. I really want a Ripper or a G3 though. I made up some plans for building a version, but realistically after paying for all the parts and painting it would probably be as much as buying a vintage one. Without the actual unique pickups.

There's a 1980 Gibson sonex? For $550, what's up with those looks like a les paul with a bigger pickguard similar to a telecaster custom/deluxe.

When I was just out of high school there were always natural finish Grabbers coming in and out of the local guitar shop for around $200-300, but I could never afford one. Once I had enough money that I could, I never saw any and then eventually they started getting pricey. The Grabber I did have I bought off Gbase for cheap, but the seller didn't disclose that the bridge was missing all the saddle screws (height adjustment) and those things are weirdly impossible to find ANYWHERE. I know a thing or two about fasteners, bolts and all that and have lots of sources and could not find anything with the thread size, diameter and length to replace them. So I paid for a Hipshot bridge, installed it and set it up. Then I had some big bill that I can't remember anymore and I had to sell it locally for pretty much what I paid, plus the cost of the repairs. That was a bummer.

I used to have a pearl colored Sonex that I bought for $250 lol. It had a slight crack in the resin body, that someone had patched with epoxy or something. That thing was freakin heavy and had a neck like a baseball bat, but it did sound really good. The stock pickups were really hot, I used it for this Integrity style band I started when my old punk band broke up, but it broke up after one show. So I sold the guitar and the Mesa Dual Rec head I had at the time as well, since playing guitar is never my main thing. That was around 2008 I think. $500 is a decent price for one these days, if it's in good shape and has the original pickups. Though I'd play it first, they're kind of a love it or hate it guitar I think.

I have zero love for modern Gibson anymore, but I have developed a weird obsession with the cheaper (at the time) 70's models. I keep buying and selling them, but not because I don't like them. Usually always for fundraising reasons, where I'm selling off all my supporting players for a new star.

I blame our music and similar styles for driving up the price of what used to be cheap gear. If you think about it this genre is the ones using most of the 70's gear that used to be dirt cheap. A short list of stuff that even a few years ago was about 1/3 less or more then what they are now:

Acoustic control
Sunn
Lawsuit anything
70's gibson

The reason you saw all this stuff used by your favorite band is because it's all they could afford. Now it's a luxury to have it.

You're right, it's just a repeat of what happened with grunge in the 90's with a different set of cheap vintage gear. That happens over and over again in music. Someone buys cheap old gear because it's all they can afford, it gets cool because cool bands use it, it becomes expensive.
