Just smoked a Cuban cigar, tasted like nearly 50 years of failed foreign trade embargo policy.
Well seeing as I hate straight tobacco it was actually ok, but I only smoked a bit and let the guy who bought them enjoy mostly.
It was more of a bucket list thing, not that I have a list.
That all said, just bought a hookah and all the accoutrements. It's enjoyable.
What I don't get is why they felt the need to cover other people's songs without giving credit.
They were perfectly capable of writing good songs of their own... and at the same time, it was normal to cover things, as long as you gave credit, then. Nobody would have held it against them if those songs were credited as covers or partial covers.
Eh, to some extent, but it's still best to credit the people who did it before, especially if something was original. And yeah, the Beatles did give credit, generally, from what I know, as they did cover lots of stuff, especially live, during their early days. Lots of stuff by R&B groups (many of which white audiences hadn't heard... because the groups happened to be black).
Such a dumb policy. It literally does nothing. Its purpose was to destabilize the Cuban government... and that hasn't worked, at all. It's actually been more than fifty years.
True yea was trying to think of it in relation to my mom. But I forgot she was a baby on my grandpas shoulders in Dallas waving when Kennedy was assassinated. She's like 52 so yea over 50 years...
Perhaps that day age and fact that they were covering black artists has something to do with it.
Might alienate portions of the audience in the eyes of record companies... Racist parents might not be keen on his kids rocking out to suggestive songs originally written by black people...

This is one of those things where you hear about it but when you hear it back-to-back like this it really hits home just how much they ripped off.
I'd also wager many many bands did this not just them, they just got big so you hear about it.
I know the rolling stones did it, but they credited the original composers.

Zep were one of the best bands of all time. That band was tight.
My drummer is filling for from beyond now. Their drummer had to take a break for school. Small world.
Yeah, the embargo was started in 1960, and widened in 1962.
Depends which ones, for me. Some of them are good, but some are, I feel, among the weakest LZ tracks.@Sartori I still prefer the LZ versions, ripoffs or no.
I don't really see that being a big issue. The age was a lot more racist, true, but the Beatles had been covering songs by black artists and crediting them in the early 60s, and in their last tour, at least, refusing to play in front of segregated audiences. If anyone was going to get flak for it, they would have.
I doubt anyone would have really even noticed if another British band, coming along two years after the Beatles had stopped even touring, let alone doing many covers, had covered songs by black artists and given due credit.
Graduate or law school starting next fall. I'm not certain at all but I'm very interested.

Yeah, the Led Zep thing is pretty poopy. Some of those original artists were alive at the time, living in poverty in the deep south or a bad part of Chicago. Zep could afford their own shaging jet, they could have certainly afforded to pay those guys royalties.
I thought the band was really good, especially the rhythm section - but i really can't stand Robert Plant's orgasmic wailing. It's gross.
In other news, moving is shaging DONE! shag that old place and especially that old landlord. Now I've got two days to start to unpack and get settled. TV is hooked up, streaming movies on the PlayStation and having beers and snacks. Feels good.
