Oh hell yeahrgh! Love those dudes. Have you heard the "Supernaturals Vol 1" ep which is them and Lent0 collaborating? Pretty killer. There's one song on that ep ("Down" maybe is the title?) that just hits me real nice.
If you don't like Blood Mountain, you probably just don't like Mastodon.
Well, I'monna give it another listen at least. Trying to figure out what all the hooplah is about. I mean, I think they are ace musicians, but that doesn't always make for the music I most wanna listen to.
As for heavy stuff, I'd second the recommendation for Ufomammut. The Oro album is great.
Absolutely. Massive album. I played it to death there for awhile. In fact, I think it was the first time in a few years where I played an entire album over and over and over...
There's also Yob, Neurosis (might depend on era, though, as their sound has changed a lot over the years), SubRosa (the most recent album, More Constant than the Gods is the heaviest), obviously Bongripper, and Thou (ultra heavy).
Familiar with Yob, SubRosa and Neurosis (like some Neurosis stuff quite a bit, find some of it meh.) Will definitely check out Bongripper (bass player is on this forum, right? and Thou.
If you want a weird, kinda ambient, noise influenced doom metal album, check out The Coronation from Laudanum. The song "Wooden Horse" is especially heavy. Has the same vocalist as Graves at Sea.

Never posted here a lot because I am a work-slave, have a family and the past few years we've been moving all over the damn country, but I gotta say, this particular corner of TalkBass has the coolest group of people on it. Very supportive, informative...I'd like to kick around here more. Hope I'm not too annoying.
I've been playing long time (jesus, more than 35 years now (!)) but I got married and had kids about 16 years back and sort of fell out. Stopped gigging, then stopped playing on sessions, then mostly packed it in. Past two years I didn't even own a bass (long, sad story) but I'm trying to get back in the saddle. Good thing is, my wife is also a musician (pretty much retired from it) but she's very cool and encouraging and wants me to start playing again.
What sucks is I'm in a little town in Oklahoma (for now) and places like this...when you try to find people to jam with, if they are around my age, it's all pudgy, pasty guys in khaki man-shorts and fuggin' fedoras wanting to play middle of the road 70s rock...Eagles, Steve Miller, Clapton faux-blues crud. I mean, that's fine if you are into it, but I am not interested in playing or listening to that stuff.
Sorry for the life story. I'd dig on living vicariously through some of you guys and hearing more stories of gigging and recording. I am VERY interested in hearing the work the people here are involved in.
