Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Started building myself a pedalboard for my birthday. Built and stained it yesterday. Gave it two coats of valspar urethane today. Hopefully I'll get the parts in Friday (solderless nuetric jacks, rubber feet, and a power plug jack) so I can finish.

On a completely unrelated note, way back several weeks ago, Squanch was gettin' gassy for a dirt pedal and I think ultimately opted for an SFT Catalinbread. When he was describing what he wanted, I chipped in semi-seriously that he try out an Ibanez CM5 ClassicMetal, which was my first stompbox in my teenage days. That prompted me to dig it's corpse out of my secret trunk of ancient music sh!t. The cheap switch in it was broken. I set out on a quest to dig out the PCB from the cheap plastic enclosure and mount it in a proper heavy-duty metal enclosure and replace the pots, jacks, and of course the switch with quality, heavy-duty stuff, throw in your usual bass-boost and LED / asymmetrical clipping mod switches, and turn my old cheap pedal into a super-deluxe booo-teeek tricked-out true-bypass MXR distortion+ clone. Well, I made just about every dumbassed mistake possible, from ordering all the parts EXCEPT the actual heavy-duty stop switch, to not properly accounting for the actual space available, and kept having to take ever more labor-intensive workarounds, such as physically removing large chunks of the circuit board containing the switching circuitry, patching bits of the board back together as it cracked apart in unintended places, to Dremel-tooling the back panel just a wee bit, it seemed like the project as a whole was turning into a quagmire like the War in Viet-Fcking-Nam and I ought to cut losses and give up BUT FINALLY IT'S TOGETHER AND IT WORKS. The original tone is all there. It's a little quirky; the bass-boost switch was supposed to be a "boost - off - bigger boost" type arrangement but it's really a "boost - off - no sound output whatsoever". The tone knob works backwards for some vintage RAT "filter" flavor. The power turns on when you plug in the OUTPUT cable, instead of the input (don't ask). But there's a real nice fat overdrive action going in with one or both LED's engaged instead of the Si diodes and the bass boost on and I'm looking forward to trying it out at full volume. Would also like to try it in that mode with downtuned guitar into cranked Sovtek MIG50 or Traynor bassmaster for serious DOOOOMage.

Of course now that I got it working, Squanch is selling his Catalinbread!

Sounds like a lot of sweat equity/mojo in that stompbox. Post a soundclip!

So I'm thinking despite the gain being set properly, the sheer volume of our amps is just too much for a portable recorder.

I'm going to try putting it as far away as possible next time, but our room isn't that big. Would upgrading to something like an H4 help this, or is that just additional features and capabilities?

Is there a limiter you can turn on?
My h4 has one. The only time it clips is if I start recording without letting letting the auto level set itself first.

He mentioned he kept it near his bass cab. I want to assume if he pulled it away or faced another direction it'd lose the clip.

When I was jamming with friends with no recording equipment I used my laptop and a dollar tree mic with a 1/4" to 1/8" adaptor. I'd put the guitar and bass on one side and face the drums then mic stand facing the drums. This kept the bass from directly over flubbing the mic and didn't let the guitar overpower the mix. If songs had vox, sing into that same mic. Ghetto but it worked.

Looks sweet!!! I have these nice maple drawer fronts that my pedals sit on and ive been meaning to attach them together for the past 6 months. Need to do that.

Happy Thanksgiving guys!


Well, yesterday's practice was a mess. We're working on a new track and it's just not going smoothly.
Everyone' pretty low now, the weather sucks.
I'm overworked, our drummer is underworked and his financial situation is a mess, and guitarist just ended a 3,5 year relationship and is pretty much devastated and considering leaving the country next year. I didn't have anything that kept me low until yesterday. Now I'm low too.
Sorry guys, just had to vent.

Happy thanksgiving guys, hopefully everyone's get fed. I'm hit the beer and turkey hard today.

Last night at band practice was legit, working on two new song ideas right now one of which is a tradition style doom piece reminiscent of Candlemass or saint vitus which is awesome because I like the theme of our band not having two song a that sound similar also I think we're cable of covering all doom genres.

Been using the Hondo p because I broke my strings on the t-40 and I can't afford new ones :(
Got the el oso/demon king combo kicking ass, found some really killer settings. The demon king can pick up radio stations and the awful hardcore vocalist covering the bouncing souls down the hallway, need to figure out how to solve that issue because I can't even jam when their up at the building I jam at.

Happy Thanksgiving Gents!!! Nor'Easter commute was only bad driving for 45 minutes of top of mountain with suoer steng winds on slick roads in a boxy Chevy Tracker, heart was in my throught for a while. Got stuck on an off ramp and had to throw it in four by four through a snow covered ditch to jump on a parallel ramp. Pigged out and now resting.
Burnsy cool pedal rehouse, I love the SFT but I am set with the Beta and the Hellcat and I am jonesin to free up cash for EHX Pitch Fork lol.
Take pics of any Costa Rican conguests, of course i want to see them but Lord Datassian demands proof!!!
