Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

tried out a Black Arts Black Forest today at practice. it sounded awesome. hard to describe it but as a heavy overdrive verging on fuzz it was great. there is no real low gain setting though. the gain stays clean all the way to 3 o'clock and then it just gets really overdriven.the eq is nice and the depth control works well to keep things from getting to loose. it may bump the Volt Thrower off the board...more experimenting required.

I had a black Forest before but it sounded so bad at home that I never bothered to take it to a jam. this one was the same but I decided to give it a go with the band and it was a totally different animal.

One thing I do know about BAT stuff is you have to not be afraid of diming them.

PCP dude started throwing random punches at people so I alerted the dude I know that worked there, he gave PCP guy a warning and let him continue doing whatever the shag he was doing. His normal shenanigans escalated to exposing himself in the ladies room, after which he was removed from the premises.

Bleeding head guy used to be Jon's roommate, super nice guy that I always wished would hang around a little more. Dudes who were on Stonerrock.com might know him - he was Torgo on that board. Helluva nice, smart and funny guy. He moved out of Jon's house and I haven't seen him since. He had a saying that changed my attitude toward working and calling in when I didn't feel like going. He said "If you're already miserable, you might as well be at work." Simple wisdom that struck me as brilliant. After hearing that I dramatically improved my attendance at whatever poopie job that I had, which led to me not having a poopie job anymore.

...anyway, that was a hell of a fun show.

I don't know of any Speakon or "Speaker Twist" cable connectors that are solderable. Panel mount ones sure, but even the cheapo cable end connectors that I've seen are all screw terminal.

Askrere, I wouldn't worry about your cheap cable. If it develops problems you just unscrew the connector, unscrew the wire connections and redo it. Fixed.

Or, alternatively you return it and use the credit to get a better cable.

Welp, placed my order for Pigeon FX Fuzz Face and Rangemaster kits. Gonna rebuild the FF into the shell of my old Dunlop one that gave up the ghost a while back. I've also been wanting to try the Rangemaster for quite some time, see how it will work to drive my Sunns a little harder. Also still thinking of grabbing one of those Sam Ash Fuzzz Boxx pedals too, and giving it a quick cap swap for some more lows.

Bryce I bought two of these type Neutrik adapters and a decent quality speaker cable so I can leave it hooked to the Bassic but switch from the speakon head inputs to heads with 1/4 inch inputs. Pretty fast to swap form the TB to the MT.

This is one way to do it, but this path gives you none of the benefits of the speakon jacks.

I bought a few ends here.

I figured there was some audiophile stuff I was missing out, is there a way to do it if the cab is speakon and the head isn't and keep the benefits?

Not really. 1/4" connectors will always have less area of contact (handle less power), and unless you are willing to swap out for a locking jack wont lock.

I dont know why anyone would replace a regular 1/4" jack with a locking one, instead of a speakon.... I guess some people would prefer them.

You are not loosing power, you are just not safely transmitting it. I think 1/4" jacks are rated at a pretty low amperage. Speakons are rated at 50 amps or something.
