Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

CL400Peavey is one of those guys who got a fine from the "mixing speakers police"....

LOL.
Those 2 amps probably couldn't be more different.

Wouldn't mind that! I do love my TB, but there's always a bit of honk I have trouble dialing out of it that is just part of that native Orange tone I think. I don't mind it, but if I could dial it out that would be nice. I also like what Auspex said about the low end compared to the TB.

The B2000 EQ is almost a GEQ with knobs. Really intuitive, and doesnt have something fugging stupid like only a 40hz bass knob. I actually turn my sub bass down a fair bit, leave the bass flat, and boost the low mids. The amp does have significantly more low end than the Orange.

The B1500 is one of Tom Bowlus' secret favorite amps.

I have hipster tendencies, but generally speaking I don't categorize well. Also an Americano** is my go to drink from Starbucks. Triple tall Americano with a couple ice cubes in it.

Quick review of the Carvin B2000:

1300W@4ohms, 2050@2ohms. Fender Blacktop P -> Akai Headrush 2 -> Fuzzrocious Demon -> Carvin B2000 -> GB Dually

Got it this weekend and was able to fudge around with it and even got to use it during last nights practice. I don't have the best ear; I usually am happy with an amp if it's loud enough and not brittle. That being said, this thing gets STUPID loud and sounds like it has balls the size of an elephant. Right now I'm just cab'd into my dually (3015) and was able to make it knock **** off walls that I wasn't able to get with the TB1000. And the tone is pretty fantastic. Low end feels powerful rather than being washed out. Very stoked.

Knobs/controls are plenty simple. I put everything at noon and it sounded badass just like that. I was a hair disappointed that the drive function didn't do a whole lot, but it sounded good as is, so I said, "fvck it for now!" For $600 it's a pretty amazing deal.

Will be ordering a 2nd Dually (Faital) at the end of the month to run beast mode.

Very interesting. I had given Carvin some thought before bought my Eden. It appears that the BX1600 can put out slightly higher but very similar numbers as my 4-Pro, has a semi parametric EQ almost identical to the Eden WT550, comes with a great warranty and weighs 40lbs less. And I could probably flip my 4 pro in a week or less for $600. Does anyone have any idea what the reliability of the BX line currently? I know there were some issues with the BX1500 a year or two ago but I had heard it was resolved. Does anyone know what kind of real world volume to expect?

I am assuming even at 1600W I could still mono bridge into my 810e and just turn the master almost all the way off and slowly work my way into proper volume; or is that a dangerous idea?

So I put the power tubes in the Altec, cleaned it up and disconnected the front (what would typically be the bottom) panel last night. Looks like I'll have plenty of room to mount the controls on the side of the chassis (now the front of the chassis), also room to add a 1/4" input. The rear has room for speaker outputs, so I'll add a couple of those as well. OT has taps for 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 ohms so I'll probably add a speaker output for 4 and one for 8 ohms. Got the NOS rectifier tubes in today (they were cheaper than buying new ones, so I got them instead, I don't think there's any advantage to using them for rectifiers over new tubes), as well as all of the caps I would need if/when I decide to replace those. I could theoretically fire it up tonight and see if it explodes or catches fire. The boss says that all of the other ones he's tried have all turned on and worked fine, only one needed a new filter cap, but the rest just worked fine without any new parts. We'll see if I'm as lucky as that.

Sumbich that mention of DADGAD acoustic tuning has put me on a new brain rape mission of learning a new tuning on guitar, like the 3rd shift at the B string wasn't a pain in the arse already. But damn that drone sounds so good. Acoustic was getting boring for me because it seems like the chords always sound too pretty or too muddy in standard tuning, well the chords I know anyway LOL.

When I play/write guitar at home I strictly use this tuning. Everything can be played open and sounds huge. I end up doing a lot octaving on the 2 highest strings.

I was looking at the BX1600 initially, but the bi amping/ bridged mode *ONLY* allowed for 800w @ 2ohm. That might be plenty, but since I was planning on running 2 nearly identical, pretty high powered cabs, I didn't need the individual power amp control for each, and wanted a little more power and headroom. Also, the B2000 is quite a bit less cluttered up front and apparently has a better tone/*warmth*

Actually the BX 1600 will not bridge @ 2 Ohms. So you would be running each side in dual mono, or 500 watts @ 4 Ohms.

Thats what I thought. Could you run both sides of the amp at 2 ohms though? 8 15s??? Or maybe 4 810s?

I think the BX1600/1500 is more suited to my tastes as the only cab I have that could take the B2000 is my 810e and I would have to be careful with it then. The B2000 would surely blow all of my 15s.

while getting a new amp is always fun, i will just put this out there as a "sensible" approach. I have the same problem with my Matamp and 215s, too much honk. I use the Empress Para EQ to cut the mids (in my case around 550Hz) and it solves the issue. I recently picked up a BMC, which is much smaller than the Empress to try and save space on the board. Right now I am only EQing the mids with the Para EQ so the BMC can do the same thing in a much smaller format.

Appreciate the input, but I really hate EQ pedals. I start to get a little mental when I've got multiple EQ stacks in my signal chain as I don't handle them very well.

Yes you could run both sides @ 2 Ohms. You may also look at the B1000. Less power than the B2000, but still 2 Ohm stable.

While your at it, buy another dually too!

Yay spending money! Deposit sent for Hex Cabs Phase Wizard.

Is the lady friend psyched you just spent the next few date night funds on yourself ;)

Also what's a tuxedo bass 300?

I kind of want to try a Carvin X100B guitar head on bass. It attenuates down to 25 watts which would be great for me. Plus it would be a tube guitar amp for me too.

I saw a video demo that really sounded good. Then corey tried it for me and said it sucked. At the time I didn't have access to one to try and confirm, so I took Corey's word and just moved on.

I was wrapping my head around the D major and minors scales in first position and it is trippy hitting two open strings in a row as part of the scales on the high strings.

Where are you finding the theory info for this tuning?

Is there something special about the B1/2000s? It is the "added warmth"? I am not opposed to the B1000 but 2x 500w is more than 900w and bridged 1600w is more than 600w.

If I had a dually or any cabinet other than my 810 that could handle a kilowatt I would be more interested in the B2000 I think. Also despite the complicated nature of the BX1600 eq, I actually am quite fond of that style. Also this solves my lack of DI issue as the DI on the 4 pro is hum city.
