the uninformed gibson store clerk said that the bass that I was playing was hand crafted "roght her n nashvul". so i am pretty sure it was made in nashville. The bass had scratchy pots, a beat to hell finish (realize it was a floor model, but $4,700 yea right), and a piss poor fret job. no idea how this bass made it out of the factory. it is pretty bad when a guitar center floor model mtd import bolt on out plays a hand crafted gibson tobias neckthru.
I can no longer GAS for a toby, unless I find a pre '92 serial 2044

10-4 The Nashville units had been plagued with issues. They are no longer made in Nashville.

Now they are being built in Arkansas. Hopefully those are better built. I would like to play one.

I long to have my old Tobias 6 String back. That thing was built like a Sherman Tank and Played like an F-22 Raptor. What was I thinking when I got rid of her?:bawl:


Though at the time and really now, when I picked that thing up I wanted to Play Jimmy Haslip stuff and that just dosnt get a lot of mileage with most of the gigs I play. Think more like Blues, Boogie Woogie, Classic Rock, Modern Rock Originals, and maybe the odd occasional Steely Dan Tune.

Playing most of the stuff I do rarely do I need more than 4 strings. I probaly should just shut up and Play.:smug:

So, I bought a redhead combo w/blown speakers (I knew this). I found a Golliath Jr. as well. I was just going to take out the speakers. Anyway, as I was looking at it, I thought, "WHY?". So, I am getting rid of the redhead combo, keeping the golliath jr and I am going to add in a Son of Bertha. I can put my SWR Bass 750 on top and still get the same system.

know it's a long shot to get a diagnostic opinion under these circumstances but am really frustrated.
bought a used 550x a couple of weeks ago. had a qualified, reputable tech go through it before i used it. said all was good. swr tells me it was mfg in July '03.
used it at two rehearsals now & get the same type "distorted buzz" when hitting E-string low notes.
weird part is it's intermittent and happens after playing for at least a hour. tonight it started after playing 3-hours. then went away & came back.
running an aguilar outboard pre-amp, level set at about 2 o'clock, into the passive/active input. fresh batteries. swapped out all cables.
550x gain & master set at 2 o'clock. limiter light flashes pretty regularly.
will call swr monday. dreading that.

Two long shots but if it was me, I'd try two easy things first.

1. Try the same head but with everything else different. Different bass, instrument cable, speaker cable and cab. Then see if it still makes the sound.

2. Try a different preamp tube.

Hey Guys,
I've using a GK400RBIV but I've been thinking about changing my tone a bit. I'm really into progressive rock. Rush, Dream Theater,etc.Do you think the 350x would give me a warmer punchier tone then the GK?. I realize the 350x has a tube and the GK doesn't but I've read a bunch of posts about SWR's not being the "warmest" of amps. How is the subwave effect on the amp? Does it track well? Any reliability issues?

Gk is a slightly "warmer" sound, unless you start hittin those highs. I owned a 1001rb and the sm900 at the same time, and can tell you the differences between those.

The gk was a little easier to setup, less tone options, but a pretty solid tone anywhere you would set her. The 900 can take more tweaking depending on the stage, setup, etc. But to me it gave a truer tone of my bass and me. Wich could make it more "sterile" to some, few, many..lol.

If you run a 400s, 500 or 900, heres a quick great punchy tone setup trick. Run the master at max, dimed all the way. Then turn the preamp gain up. It really changes the tone and feel of the amp and doesnt hurt it.

I just got my hands on a grand prix with a mesa SPAX7-A tube and a crown XLS 602 power amp. I run these through an Eden Nemesis 4x10 which I plan on replacing with an Aguilar GS 410. I also plan on replacing the XLS 602 with an xTi2000. So far I've gotten to use it at one practice and one gig. I think I'm in love.

I didn't get the real feel for this thing until the gig on saturday. It sounded great from start to finish but 1/4 of the way into the second set my tone was incredible! All of a sudden the warmth just came oozing out of this thing and I knew I made a good choice. I play a Fender jazz bass 24 V and an Ibanez SR506. The Ibanez is a very VERY bright sounding bass and ever since I got the Fender I've been leaning away from the 6 string a little more. But when that warmth kicked in my Ibanez sounded more amazing than I've ever heard it sound. I'm officially hooked on this SWR.

Ok, so everybody tells me that the preamp tubes are all the same.. No way is this correct IMHO! My Bass 750 came with a Grove Tube ECC83s. I replaced it with several different 12AX7's, but hated all that I tried. Then I put in a JJ ECC83s and I was back in business! Anyone else have a tube thing?

SWR hasn't been innovative in the past 10 years compared to the advances they were making 15 years before that, it's more maintaining the portfolio. The golights are not break through, it's more of seeing the trend too late.

BUT... I really, really like the older SWR SM-400/500 and the Basic 350 and would be completely happy using any one of them as my main amp.

And... the Henry 8 shouldn't do what it does but is does and it's great. I'd be happy using it as a main cab... no problem.

Found the tuner at Cream City Music,got one of the last 2 in stock,should be here on the 28th,From what information i found out Cream City Music bought out the last stock of them from SWR(swr disscontinued the tuner).was able to buy the Tuner for $109.00 on sale(shipping $18 UPS) $127 in all great deal considering the retail was $179.:D
