SX Ursa 6-string Jazz bass

(sigh) "it's hand-made... it's hand-made..."

Took the neck off to shim it in an attempt to bring the action in the upper registers down a wee bit.

I'm guessing those aren't micro-tilt adjustment holes.

And that little diamond thing is from one of those plastic bands they use to wrap heavy boxes. It was being used as a shim for some reason - coincidentally right where there was a slight hump.

...it was only $139. Thankfully none of this looks serious. I'm just glad I wasn't planning on using this neck on another bass. Although there's no way I'd consider putting in any kind of beefier neck attachment setup now.

BUT, on the plus side, with the tension off the neck is straight as an arrow, and the fretwork looks absolutely fantastic. I'm starting to think I may've unhumped that hump already just by taking that plastic out.

Wow! This is s first! Double set of neck screw holes! See that one that is by the truss rod? I had an SX neck like that where one screw ran right into truss rod and bottomed out! Had to redrill the hole straight.

If it were me since the neck is straight and frets decent, I'd just slap threaded inserts into the proper holes, crank her down and see how she plays. If decent, then rock it!

Trouble is the little ears that are used for pickup adjustments are wider on the SX 6 stringer than any standard jazz pickup Fender or Carvin. One would have to remove the pickup itself and switch out the covers to make it work without rerouting the bass :Ol

So far as I know there is only one pickup that has ears the same as the SX 6er pickups. It's these from Australia.

So far nobody seems to have tried them and reviewed them. There was one guy on usenet a while back who got a set and all he'd say was he liked them which wasn't very informative.

After reading all of the reviews, I placed an order for one myself today. The sunburst with with maple neck is $149.95. At that price, even if I don't like it, I won't lose much when I sell it.

Good! Be sure to let us know what you think. I'm still absolutely enamored with mine, but the more reviews the better (this thread has a suspicious amount of "I'm ordering one now!" posts that never got followed up on.) I'm also trying to get a feel for Rondo's general QC. I ordered a Grande Bouche from them that I just about immediately sent back :\

Ok, I should be clear, it won't be exactly like mine. It will be like mine minus the black guard, straploks, and different string guides (also it won't have my shielding or series/parallel mod) but it will still be money well spent!

... I'm also trying to get a feel for Rondo's general QC. ...

Rondo sells 'em, "SX" makes 'em. I don't know if Rondo does any inspection work when the instruments arrive from China although they do open the box to put your receipt inside.

I'm guessing that they rely on the manufacturer for QC and are very generous about replacing an instrument that the customer finds fault with.

I once ordered a 5-string, received a 4-string (in a 4 string box, because Kurt asked me about that). The replacement was the correct bass but had "issues" with the body (ripples, like the wood wasn't dry when it was machined). I gave up on getting a 5 at that point. However, the two 6-strings I've owned (still have the red one) have been fine.

I bought a four string from someone on the forum to use for drop tuning and was really impressed. I'll be sure to chime back in. Mine is actually sitting in the USPS facility due to the east coast storm.

I was going to get a preamp, but I found this pedal by a local maker that I really like that I'm going to try to use instead of a preamp. If it works out I'll post some sound files.

What's the pedal?

What's the pedal?

It's the Lounsberry Organ Grinder. It was designed for organ, but sounded interesting so I picked one up for bass. It's an overdrive pedal, but when I use it for bass, it provides a richer sound rather than an overdrive sound. They are hand-wired and under $100 so I picked it up just to try it and am glad I did. I'm going to do a review of it some time this month.

?Does the Ursa 6str fit in this hsc?
Invalid Link Removed

I just tried putting my 6-string into a rectangular SKB case and it fits. The bass' effective length in the case is 47 inches (the headstock points to the bottom corner of the case (if it's standing on the hinge side).

I should have put it back to back with my MIM 4-string P Bass but back to back with my Douglas fretless P-Bass, the Ursa's headstock is a couple inches longer.

I have some Douglas cases (for a couple semi-hollow basses and an electric 12string) and they're not bad.

If there's a MusicGoRound store near you check with them, they often have used hardshell cases. Also, ask at your local GC too. Sometimes people trade in instruments with a case and they separate them. I once bought a near perfect TKL case for $5! And there's always Craigslist.
