Synth Bass Subforum?

Wow twocargar ..... that's one of the coolest pics of Geddy's 1984 touring synth rig I've ever seen. I've never seen the Oberheim 8 voice built together with the Minimoog like that before. I've always just seen the Minimoog rig on his right, and the 8 voice on his left in an "L" shape. That is really cool!

So I just take my synth bass postings to Muffwigglers. It can get a bit "wild wild west" in that forum, but at least there is synth bass content. It's actually kind of suprising how many synth owners end up being bass players over there.[/QUOTE]

Yes...if this Forum doesn't want to facilitate its members the options are quite clear.

The mods here ARE very good at encouraging hundreds of boring arguments about mainstream gear and artists.

The mods here ARE very good at encouraging hundreds of boring arguments about mainstream gear and artists.

I prefer the Wild West to here, Muffwigglers and other forums.
I am so over 97.8% of TalkBass.
That is why I longer am a supporting member. I mostly rather buy and sell gear that is not too known on here.

Hey guys,

I would love for a synth bass subforum. I'm just getting into the instrument myself and am looking to make my first hardware synth purchase sometime soon.

The two I've looked at most are the Moog Sub Phatty and the Novation Bass Station 2. I know that they're completely different animals, but if any of you have spent time with both, what do you find the pros and cons to be of each? It seems to me like the Moog has more filter and oscillator control, while the Novation has an arpeggiator and step functions, both of which can be cool in their own right.

I play indie rock for the most part and am looking to add some synth bass to my arsenal.

I'd take a glance at the Arturia Minibrute too. Nice little analog monosynth. Lots of knobs (1 per function). Nice little arp too. I picked one up a few weeks back for $420 from the GC website. It won't get as fat as the Moog but it's not lacking. Switching patches can be a trick because it has no presets. So your fingers need to really fly to get everything positioned right.

I'm getting good use out of mine so far, mostly for basslines.

I agree that a subforum for bass synth would be a nice addition to the forum.

Hi there,

I started a thread a while back regarding whether or not there should be a Synth Bass Subforum. Quite a few members were commenting on my Bass Pedal Club thread, so I figured I'd post a poll and see what the consensus was. The first page of comments lays out what members are looking for, and that does not mean a sub-forum like the Double Bass and Bass Guitar are sub-forums. I think people would like the Synth Bass sub-forum to be under the Bass Guitar forum. Since things like Taurus Bass Pedals are not bass guitars, not effects, and really don't belong in other forums, this topic would be perfect for the Synth Bass Subforum. There are many, many other topics that would fall in there as well.

Over 270 votes, 7 pages of comments and over 4,700 views later, members are wondering why the admins, moderators or whomever haven't commented one way or another in consensus.

I realize this forum is not a democracy, so I can see that if a couple of members want something changed it probably won't be.

Sorry to be long winded, but we await an answer.

It would be great to be able to find threads about synths without having to browse through a forum that is completely unrelated except for 'electronics are electronics'. A Taurus has about as much in common with a rat pedal as it does with a GK 800, right? Maybe we should put synth posts in the amp forum?

For preset MONSTER bass sounds, get an Alesis Micron. I picked mine up for $250 with a Gator soft case. It has an unlimited preset memory capacity, synth-drums, does patterns, arpeggios, key-transpose of patterns, is super portable, ALL METAL construction, and a great computer editor made called Hypersynth. The Micron has the exact same synth engine as the Alesis Ion.

The Micron has giant rhino-nuts bass sounds (plus lead sounds, pads, strings, electric pianos, organs, synth drums, special FX, and so on), fully polyphonic, 4 VCOS, at least a dozen filters, a few digi-FX (flangers, phasers, chorii, delays of all kinds, reverbs). It's multi-timbre engine allows playing several sounds at once, is fully responsive to midi sequencing, and can send arpeggios and sequences out to other devices via midi-out. It also has a really nice feeling keybed, aftertouch, full-on midi in-out-through, headphone output, expression pedal and sustain pedal jacks. It's just a great little synth. I've been a synth player since 1978, owned more synths than I can remember (Oberhiems, Moogs, Arps, Korgs, and so on) and this little Alesis is just a great little synth that's super portable, built like a manhole cover, and readily available on eBay for anywhere from $250 to $400 depending ....

Take a look, the worst that can happen is you won't like it.

I've had to pass my modular synth rig off as an "FX" unit as well. While it does do "FX" it is a full-on modular synth capable of filtering bass, as well as everything a five VCO three VCF fully modular synth is. See the link in my sig ... "X-Rig" .... it does not belong in an FX forum.

I don't even browse in here anymore. It's mostly a prestige game of "look at the expensive Oooo Ahhh prestigious amp/cab/whatever thing I own ... now I'm accepted and amongst those that look up to me". I dunno .. something like that. I've never been much of a social butterfly or one to fit-in with popular groups. It just seems like if you're not and owner of some type of "best gear out there for the moment" you're not taken seriously here. I have a Squire VMJ bass (see sig ... "X-Bass") with Mackie power amps ("boooo!!!") and Carvin speaker cabs ("boooo!!!"). But if you don't have some $4k bass with the very latest lightweight wunderampen you're just not taken seriously.

So I tend to stick to about 5 or 6 threads that are fairly far off of the mainstream trail and pretty much ignore the nonsense elsewhere. This place kinda reminds me of The Gear Page sometimes.

I will admit that I have met some really REALLY great folks in here though. But most of the time I meet them in threads based on things "out where the busses don't run".

My own ideas about what to do with a bass don't align with 90% of the flow of electricity in here though.

My point? It seems like bass players that are into synths are the same type of "weird" that I am. So a synth-bass subforum may create a place for us bastard children to congregate. It all depends ....

Okay, here's the answer:

yes, we did discuss it some time ago. I thought I had responded, so my apologies for not getting back to you sooner.

We don't really feel it warrants it's own forum or sub forum.

If you wanted to distinguish between pedals used to change the sound of a bass guitar and usage of keyboards / taurus pedals etc it might make more sense for us to create a demarcation that way and those threads could go in Misc. That way when you search misc for synth you should only be turning up relevant threads as opposed to when you search in FX right now and have effect pedals threads mixed in your results.

As far as overrunning this place with synth threads ..... that makes THEM win! That's exactly what they want you to do is play it their way. I mean, you guys go ahead and do whatever makes you happy, y'know? You'll get no grief from me about whatever it is you all decide to do.

But the "occupy Talk Bass" idea won't work any better than "Occupy Wall Street" did, which was a complete failure and just gave the right wing something to complain about, and the entire affair just made the participants of "Occupy" look bad.

Me? I'm sticking with Muffwigglers, especially after that reply from the beaurcrats on the 6th floor of this "corp". Too bad I guess, I really really like a great number of folks here in Talk Bass.

I'll still participate in the half dozen or so threads I subscribe to, and of course I'll continue with the projects I have in progress here in TB, but as far as adding more synth content, I'm out. I see no sense in putting the amount of time that I put into threads to have ten people see them.

I am kinda well known to post very involved verbous threads with a lot of photographic content and a lot of extra-forum links. That takes me a lot of time to do those, and a lot of effort (not to mention a lot of bandwidth in my Photobucket account that I end up having to pay for every month just to keep the pictures posted). If I'm going to go through those efforts I want folks to be exposed to it (without ME having to SPAM and promote the thread with endless bumps and short little useless posts within the threads to put them at the top of the list and get them exposed).

Informing and helping others is my 100% goal every time I post those "monster threads" that I do. What's the point if they get lost in obscurity among ... ~ahem~ ... "misc".

Thanks a LOT for your efforts on this Twocargar. Too bad our voices fell on deaf ears. I wish the work and time you put into this would have produced more fruit.

I don't think I'd close it .... keep in mind my rants are just that ... "my" rants. Obviously by Icecycle66's reply of "lame" he doesn't agree with either my carrying on or your thoughts about closing the thread (or both).

So for everyone else's benefit you probably should keep it open. I'm sure I'm in the minority with my opinions, I normally am.
