Talkbass weight loss challenge?

Well I'm not at my ideal weight yet but I've sucessfully lost 42lbs over the past year and a half (I lost most of it in the first 8 months, but have been maintaining it since.)

Started out at 220lbs and right now I'm at 178.

I did it all on weightwatchers with little to no exercise, but I just started doing some cardio and have a weight set being delivered to me tomorrow.

The plan is to just convert as much weight that I have left into muscle, but we'll see how that goes lol.

great job "thissnsucks," you've inspired me. I worry that I don't have that much time for hardcore exercise, but if you could do it so could I

Thanks dude!

It's honestly just about setting reasonable goals for yourself and being consistant. The first week or two is tough, but after that it just becomes a part of your daily routine.

42 lbs is a pretty impressive loss, congrats. As for the weights, speaking from experience, don't rush it, watch your technique to avoid injury, and eat plenty of protein. Read up on it.

I have to agree with this. I'm sick of "hard guys" at the gym, showing off how much they can deadlift while you stand back and wait for one of their vertibae to fly free.

Tho you don't need a huge amount of extra protein when you are lifting :)

Something else to look into is CrossFit. Majorly good fitness workout and you'll gain a fair amount of muscle mass too.

Would anybody recommend P90X?

Another thing I would add from personal experience with weightlifting...when I used to lift a lot I had a gym-quality bench, Olympic set, 3 standard barbell sets. As I got more and more equipment, it got to the point where I rarely had to change plates--I already had something ready to go. This is where I discovered that I vastly preferred dumbbells. That was 25 years ago. Everything wound up getting stolen while in storage.

I have started again with some moderate lifting, pushups, pullups, situps, etc. I bought a few pairs of cast iron dumbbells, they're only 75 cents/lb. Barbells are a pain, less versatile, and not as good a workout.

I wouldn't say they aren't as good a workout.

Heck, if you only got to do one excercise, deadlifts would be it, closely followed by squats. Neither of which you can do fully with dumbells.

But I'm on the opposite side of the fence from you. I'm all about the barbell lifts. Squats, Front Sqauts, Deadlifts, Shrugs, Shoulder press, all as supporting lifts for clean & jerk and snatch.

Granted you can do them with dumbells, but you don't really get usefull DBs heavy enough.

Yeah, I guess you need barbells for the heavy stuff. I'm so old, unfit and broken down I don't even think in terms of over 100 lbs at this point.

Ah right, fair shout. I never took into account age. (tho I probably should have when you mentioned your stuff was nicked 25 years back!)

Tho on saying that, my godfather's old training buddy now in his late 60's/early 70s and still squats over 500lbs :-\ But he never stopped, so, I dare say that's different!

Deadlifts and bench, best combo for getting in shape quick. Compound movementd ftw

If you have lost 3 inches from your waist, don't worry about what the scale says. You're doing great.

Thanks! :D

Dropped another inch and now have lost 10 pounds. Had my first TKD test and broke my first 3/4" board. That was wicked cool!

Bought some new non-work clothes because everything I have is starting to hang off me. Figure next month I'll have to buy work clothes too. Dropped from a 42" to a 38" waist. :hyper:

Would anybody recommend P90X?

.

I definitely would. I did it for about 3 weeks a couple of years ago, before I just up and quit. I've never felt better than I did for those 3 weeks. Just walking felt much more comfortable than it used to. The workouts are really intense, and versatile. I quickly noticed my shoulders getting bigger, and my overall body starting to look more like a "V" and less like a pear :p

I just joined a gym last week, doing strength training, I walk 2 miles a day also, I've lost 12 pounds this month. I also changed my diet, no pop, I eat exactly half of everything I did before. Working out is great for the mind and body. Pretty soon I'll be able to carry a SVT like a micro head :)
