Talkbass weight loss challenge?

Been trying since end of January / beginning of February to lose weight. Doing Taekwondo an average of 2x/week for 90 minutes each session. Even with this and dietary modifications, I have yet to make the scale budge.

I have, however, doubled the amount of pushups I can do, and lost 3 inches from my waist. Definitely more flexible and have much better balance (especially while on one leg :) ). I think the coolest part about TKD is that it is mentally stimulating as well as physically stimulating. I'm having a great time, meeting some cool people and probably have more endurance than I've had in years. :D

Now if I could just start weighing less, that would be really cool. :D

If you have lost 3 inches from your waist, don't worry about what the scale says. You're doing great.

Hey all!

I'm also focusing on losing some weight. I'm not particularly concerned about the exact number, but rather my performance which is directly related. I'm currently 6'0", 214 lbm. I'm getting married in August, so I'd like to be 185.

I eat like a horse, but I've changed WHAT I eat, which helps a lot. I eat close to 2 pounds of meat per day (grass fed most of the time), with a lot of vegetables and no grains, sugars, dairy or processed foods. I lost 8 lbm in the last week - I have a 10 mile race tomorrow & carrying the extra weight hurts my time. I'm running a marathon in November, and carrying 30 extra pounds over 26.2 miles is ridiculous.

Here is some advice that I've found helps.
1. Do compound lifts (squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead press). If you know how to do them properly, explosive movement lifts (cleans, snatches, etc.) are also fantastic. They build muscle all over your body which increases your basal metabolic rate. If you want a good program, check out Invalid Link Removed.

2. Cut out soda, extra fruit, dairy (unless you are okay with it - it is loaded with sugars), grains (especially bread, donuts, bagels, etc.), and replace it with meat (incl. poultry & fish) and vegetables. The weight will fall off.

3. Running & biking are great. Do it hard.

4. Limit beer drinking. Empty calories & hurts your training.

I hope this helps. I'll repost in a while, to be accountable for my performance. Keep charging!

It sounds like you will have no problem losing that 30 lbs.

272.5 pounds.

That's not too abysmal considering I'm 6'4". But I sure wouldn't mind going through life without carrying the extra weight equivalent of a medium-sized bass cab at all times.

Down to 264. 8 pounds in 3 months isn't that spectacular but I can already feel a difference. :hyper:

My knees were bothering me. Before contemplating drugs or surgery for that, I want to drop about 40 pounds - see if that works.

I want to pedal myself down to the 220s before I turn 40 in November. I'm sick of feeling like an old man - I want my vitality back.

i need motivation. since January i have actually gained 15lbs :o

i made the whole lose weight this year new years resolution but am failing miserably.

i cannot afford a gym membership but i own a decent pair of running shoes and a bicycle. i just need to get off my butt.

i just finished college for the summer so maybe i should just get on my bike.

i will start by setting an alarm to wake up tomorrow with time to get outside. here goes nothing.

You're going the wrong way! You're going to kill somebody!

I'm down ~ 30 lbs since febuary. Down over 2 pants sizes, a shirt size and a ring size. I feel pretty awesome. My wife, who had weight loss surgery, has lost ~80 lbs in that time. I'm feeling pretty happy with my progress.

That's great to hear, keep it up! Are you guys getting any kind of professional guidance with diet/exercise, or are you on your own? Weight lost rapidly can be hard to keep off.

I've been doing a Biggest Loser competition at work (which is hard working at a candy factory) and hadn't lost a pound until I came down with the flu. Dropped 7 lbs. in a week and that got the ball rolling. Pants felt looser, it felt good. I've dropped another 3 lbs. since then. I was 187 lbs. at 5'7" before the flu, I'm down to 177 this morning. 10 lbs. in two weeks feels great, and now that I'm back to running every day and really watching what I eat, I'm hoping to hit my target weight of 165 and run a 10K this summer.

this made me laugh :D
I am 5'7" 189. I am trying to get down to 165 by september. I am going to start counting calories, starting today; 1672/day. I'll also keep an eye on how often I go run, play basketball, or work out and make sure I do it enough weekly to make a difference. Currently, I do something athletic about 2 times a week (has gone way down since I've seriously picked up the bass.

Thanks for this thread; I'll keep an eye on my progress and that of you all

I know I intended to join in this fun, but it's been a bit belated. I've had a horrific amount of write-ups to work on, so I've been sat at a computer for the best part of the last 6 weeks (probably why my post count on here has gone up quite a bit!).

Actually gained about 14 lbs in these past 6 weeks :-\.

Starting next week (after the final bit of work is done and in), I'm going to start working on loosing some weight.

Might hammer it to begin with, drop down to 1,000 cals a day and regular gym work, see how it goes. Certainly wouldn't keep that up, don't want to start loosing the muscle mass instead of the fat!
