So I just installed a set of d’addario tapes to my Martin Acoustic bass, which has a mahogany body. For years I had used TI flats and loved them, but have gone on a bass string odyssey lately with my acoustic. Hate string noise with phosphor bronze, hated nickel as too bright. What will be darker and woodier and uprighty sounding- my TI flasks or the tapes? Also what’s the darkest tapes? I play mainly on my worship team. The setting ismysef on bass , a piano player, and a percussionist.

The D'Addario tapes are roundwounds under that black stuff. The newly re-released GHS Tapewounds are flatwounds under the tape. They may be darker but no personal experience with them.

I have the SRH500 and recently put a set of La bella black tapes on her... to me they have transformed the tone and playability of this bass... in a really good way... super warm but without losing definition... I cant stop playing it since

which set did you put on, the 760N (60-115) or the 750N (50-105)?

I really like what the SRH505 sounds like with tapes on it. Nice thick thump but still very articulate. Roll the tone almost off and get very Uprightish sound.

So how many people are part of this club? I've used tape wound from the beginning. I also play fretless exclusively. Not the usual fretless sound either. I presently have a set of Picato Nylon tape wound and have found them brighter then La Balla and Rotosound. Problem is I don't know if Picato is still making them. I got this set as old stock.

Update: looks like the makers of this brand went out of business some time ago. Too bad they are really bright.

which set did you put on, the 760N (60-115) or the 750N (50-105)?

I had to check... they are the 760N's... no adjustment necessary to the nut... the SRH500 really blooms with these strings on... its fast becoming my favourite bass to play

yeah, the reason I asked is that the 760 tape wound sets usually require modification on the nut whereas the 750 tape wound sets don't.

The outside edge of two nuts (E side) chipped off after a while with the 760Ns. I filed the new nut slots before putting the strings back on. I'd suggest doing the same to be sure the strings are sitting flat in the nut.

LaBella 760Ns for jazz - on a big, blank plank ABG. Got'em on my fretless 67P too, when I don't take the acoustic.

I play rock, stoner rock, stoner metal, doom metal, gothic rock, gothic metal, industrial, industrial metal, thrash metal, speed metal and I use D'Addario tapewounds across all those genres

I've got some non-tapes coming, but I think that tapes would be cool to try on my new-to-me Ibanez Roadstar II which has a passive Stingray-placed pickup for punk, pop, stoner-doom, old-school R&B, whatever.
