TapeWound Club~Anyone?

Returned from the brick and mortar with three Dunlop 58 mm picks - the lightest they had. To my ear the attack is much clearer but less percussive than a hard pick on roundwounds.

Also, probably need to devote some time to learn to play with a pick ....
That sounds consistent with @bobomatic said looks like it's time for me to run out and pick some up for myself. :woot:

Just tried my first set of tapewounds (D'Addario, because that's what the store had).

So far I am really liking them! I put them on my EBMM Cutlass (a passive model, like a P bass). I have TI flats on a couple other basses and like those, but am digging the feel of these tapewounds.

Just wanted to join another club...

I found a quick way to mitigate the hum with tapewounds by modifying an excellent fix suggested previously by Otto (will try to find that post).

I taped a piece of picture wire (it was all I had) to the bridge, sticking one end in a hollow saddle to help it stay on.

The other end looped through a belt loop so the wire is touching my belly. (He had originally wrapped the wire around his wrist but that didn’t work for me).

It grounds the strings but I can also take off the bass easily and switch instruments.

I’ll find a more elegant long term solution but this is working quick and dirty. Bye bye hum!

Does the brass ball end on Labella copper white nylon has less hum than plastic colour ball end on D’addario tapewound string ?

Some time there are tiny hum on my copper white set , some time no only occur while wide open the tone knob.

I don’t know- This is my first set of tapewounds, but it seems to be an issue with all brands of this style.

Some days it’s not bad but today the hum was super annnoying, maybe because I had a fan on. This took care of it.

I think we need a sticky just on this. There is a lot of misunderstanding.

One thing I just learned and verified is that my body is actually the single biggest source of that noise in my passive basses, which is why most of it goes away when I'm connected via a conducting path to the output ground. Also, I discovered long ago that one very unglamorous but effective way to do that is attach a bare wire taped to the metal case of the instrument cable plug in the bass output jack and attach the other end of the bare wire around your wrist to maintain a conducting path.

Otto

Here’s the original idea from a prior thread. It worked for me.

I'm late to the party ... but thinking these new types of string may solve a problem for me.

So can anyone suggest a tape wound that sounds like nickel rounds (or worn-in nickel rounds, for preference) but feels like a flat, to my plucking hand ?

(Or does that describe all of them ?)
