Tatoos on Women?

My wife has a tat and she says this as well - she got it for her and not for anyone else. I have no issues with tats on women in general - just with bad ones :)

Question for folks into body mods in general:
I can definitely understand and accept that it's for oneself. But what I don't understand, is why there seems to be such a "push back" if one doesn't like a particular body mod on someone else?
If I'm to accept something, then is it not then fair that the other person should accept that I may not like it?
Not sure if I'm making sense...(it's early and I need more coffee)

But here's an example - we were at an art show one time chatting with a few strangers when in walks in a guy obviously into total body mods. His face was 100% tattood with green scales, ears were gauged out massively, tongue split, teeth filed.... I remarked something like "oh my god, that's freaky!" and then proceeded to be dressed down by several people. I attempted to explain that I respect his right to do that to himself, and I give him credit for having the courage to get all that work done, BUT I still think he looks like a monster.
Honestly, I would be happy to chat with him and would not assume that he's a looney, creep, or judge his character, but I'm not going to deny that he looks like a freak to me personally. What's the problem in that?

For the record, that's not what I am trying to do, and apologize if it came off this way. I had already addressed that with Cheese, but there were some other broad sweeping generalizations I took exception with, and simply took them to task...but it certainly wasn't presented with the goal of "winning" anything.

I think it can be a bit dual sided.

Some people need to be less judgemental and others need to grow thicker skins when someone disagrees with a decision they've made.

As long as any tat has a good meaning I can deal with the "tramp stamps" because most women have them and perhaps something on their shoulders, wrist, upper back and ankles. However chest and leg tattoos on women just turn me off. That's just me though. A woman with no tats is alright too.

By it's very nature, it is a picture to be displayed. People may get tattoos for themselves, but they choose tattoos over some other memento because they are a visual art, and visual art always conveys a message to an audience of viewers.

Even if you don't want to share it with other people, the fact that the medium is inherently a public one (as with all art forms) means people will be inclined to observe it, think about it, and discuss it. The very fact that a tattoo is a tattoo makes them do so.

I think my painting in the attic or bass in the bedroom analogy a few posts back is a pretty apt one. It's fine to do it for yourself, but it's unreasonable to ask people not to pay attention or think about it because you are deliberately placing a piece of communicative information in front of them and one of the most basic human instincts is to respond to communication.

I admit I'm not a fan of tats in the chest/breast area. Even Kat Von D understands that one! I'm also not too crazy about tattooed hands. Ladies, if you must, no lettering...you're not Ozzy for Jeebus sake!

I have to be honest, I would think that guy is a looney just by his appearence. It may be wrong but it happens. I think it is good for me to be aware that I judge people this way sometimes.
Tatoos are a fashion, fad, trend whatever you want to call it. These things come and go, some of us like them and some don't. No big deal. People with tats know they are going to have them their whole lives, that is their issue and none of my business.
I don't think you can get buried in a Jewish cemetery if you have tats. Is that true?

Thank you for giving a civilized response. :) Responding to something is fine, I understand that completely. Artwork is artwork, good or bad, and whether displayed or not. (a lot of tattoos aren't displayed at all) But quite a few of the responses on here were in the negative vein. And those were the ones I was commenting on. These kinds of threads tend to degrade to the baser, juvenile form and I just felt the need to try and give my point of view as someone who wears hers with pride.

The way I look at it is that I wouldn't think "looney" necessarily but I would certainly wonder what in that person's psyche could drive them to that extreme of an appearance. Honestly I would suspect some sort of psychiatric issues to do something like that.. but that's just me.
