Tattoos.. yay or nay.

Let me also ad that at your age...you can probably expect heavily tattooed people to become less and less of a minority. Maybe this is just a fantasy but older generations that look down upon these things will start to fade and the art form will continue to gain legitimacy. In the future...heavily tattooed people may be in positions of authority...successful business people....etc. etc.
Its 2009, you just elected a black president and a woman candidate ran. In many of these positions of authority in both the public in private sector, in 2009, there is still institutional racism and sexism that holds back both men and women. Ethnic people and women have been around a lot longer than heavily tattooed people. If you honestly think that heavily tattooed people are going to be accepted that quickly in these organisations / positions, you need to take a good look at how long its taken just to remove much more "discriminatory" prejudices against race and sex. In other words, don't hold your breath! :D

While I agree 100% with your assessment...I'm amazed at tattooing's rise to legitimacy. It is comparable to the exponential rise of computer technology.

As previously posted...most tattoos don't carry the rebellious stigma they used to carry. Does that not mean that Gang and Jailhouse tattoos won't hold you back...well no...those tattoos will most certainly knock you down and I don't condone getting those sorts of tats.

Perhaps I'm naive but I like to be optimistic about that and about the state of factionalization of races and sexes. Sooner or later something is going to unite us.

I'm also twice the OP's age. While maybe not in my lifetime, perhaps in the OP's.

EDIT: Let me also submit that tattooing has been around almost as long as man learned how to express him/herself creatively.

EDITx2: Okay been around for 5000 years that can be proven (The Iceman discovered in 1991 has tattoos).

maybe this will answer your question.

IS this supposed to be a negative, or positive post? :eyebrow: It doesnt look terrible, unless Im missing something.

Life's too short to break the heart of your loved ones.

I used to wear earrings, always wanted piercings but my dad's not ok with that.He just doesn't want it,he didn't say a word to me for months.I finally took them of.

What did I lose?Nothing.

Machine, I agree. Life is too short. But IMO, only IMO, do I think that if a family member or your family cant accept you for small life decisions such as this, and look at you differently for it, what makjes them a loved one? Maybe if youre put in prison for 3 life sentences they have the right, but being blood and having that bond shouldnt be broken because one person makes a decision to better their personal psyche.

Family should be family. Period.

YMMV, IMO, etc.

My father didn't stop talking to me because I wore earings.
He told me,can you please take 'em off?I really don't like those on you.
I was 16 with a boiling blood,I told he ain't the boss of me and I ain't taking it off.
You know,the teenage temper&stupidity.

After that I grew long hair, almost killed myself of alcohol abuse etc etc,he saved my life many times.
Everyone says if I were their kid, they'd kick me out of the home years ago.:smug::atoz:

Why not, I am sure it will go well with your pet rock, hula-hoop, rollerblades, earing, hyper-color tshirt, chuck norris jokes, bacon obsession and use of the word fail. :D

Pet Rock?

Hyper-Color?

I think you're dating yourself:

(sorry for the extreme creeper factor, the alternative was mentally prepping myself for another job interview, I can't take the stress.)

If it's any consolation, the original plan was to 'shop you in "gay Iranian Pirate" mode over you having drinks with Ivar in Iceland.

Unfortunately, that head was far too small to put over out dear moderator's face, but luckily (or not, depending), I found that one while browsing for a usable substitute. :p

Back on topic:
Jordash, you've got 2 years to wait anyway, why make the thread now? You haven't even made a "I need advice on how to get laid in college" thread yet.

I'd say ditch the regular bass clef. EVERYONE gets one of those. Even people that dont play an instrument, I've seen it. If you want something Bass-clef-ish, hit the drawing board, make it yours. There's nothing better than putting your OWN stuff on your OWN body.

making it your own is a good idea however in my experience people end up much much happier with the finished product if you go to a respectable artist, give them your ideas and let them come up with a design. and i do mean artist.. if they go jump on google and print something out, run away..

if you want to laugh Invalid Link Removed.. the owners attitude that he is better than everyone else shows through on the website and they pretty much wont do a tattoo if you dont pick it out of the book or they cant find exactly what you want on google..

edit* i just checked it out.. they cleaned it up a bit.. but check out the tattoo info section.. its still pretty egonmaniacal

That's a sad way to look at it. I could write a novel on the stories behind my ink, the reason for it, the people there when it got done etc.

I don't see them as a rebellion or being different :hmm:
not sad at all......as time goes by lots of things change, including how you will likely feel about those who were there when you got it done.........thats life........

ive got enough stories for a book too but the problem is finding anyone
interested in reading it.....

I've got a really bad Einsturzende Neubauten tattoo on my arm that I got while I was younger. It looks pretty silly now that I'm 25. If I get more tattoos, they will be something that I'll be able to conceal... and that's a really, really big if. Plenty of other, less expensive ways to express yourself, sir.

i have never heard anyone say they wanted a tattoo to "express themselves" or "be unique" i think that was the 70s.. now people just do it cuz they want to...

a friend of mine loves plaid so he got a tattoo that looks like his skin is ripped and underneath is plaid.. its awesome as hell..

"awesome as hell" is a good reason to get a tat.

as well as "cuz i wanted one"

or "its a work of art"

or even "cuz its funny"

i'm in no way being sarcastic

Tattoos are really popular right now and I think that a lot of people get them for the wrong reasons. These are the people who think that tattoos will make them cool or do it because they want to fit in with their friends or because a magazine told them that tats are in right now.

Getting them to "rebel" or be an individual is also silly imo. Everybody has tattoos now, and in the future most people will be just as embarrassed of their body art - not unlike how people look at photos of them when they were younger with then-hip haircuts and clothing.

When I was 16, I really wanted some work done. I was even in a band with a tattoo artist who promised to do me up for cheap. The things I wanted on me were stuff like pentagrams, upside down crosses, etc. Basically stuff that I'd hate to have on me now.

I got my first tattoo at 20. I have quite a few now. I get them not because they're cool or in, or to rebel and show what I'm about. I get them because I like the art and they remind me of a point in time that I wanted to eternalize with body art. I know that tats close doors for you career and social-wise and you have to be okay with that before you get inked. I also realize that in ten years people might look down at me and say things like, "oh, you were into that tattoo trend back then?" But I don't care. I get tattoos for me and me alone. And if you're getting one for any other reason then I think you'll regret it later.

+1

Personally I really enjoy good tattoos. If you get something that is original and meaningful Im all for it. Even though I tend to like slightly more involved pieces like sleeves and what not. On the other hand I cant possibly see how someone can walk into a tattoo place and pick something out of a book. Those are the types of people that shouldnt be getting ink in my opinion.

Myself, I have 1 smaller tattoo on my left arm I kind of wish I though through a little more (I was 18) but it doesnt bother me that it is there. On my right arm I started what I hope to complete as a quarter-sleeve soon and after 4 years it is extremely relevant to my beliefs and philosophy of life and I really cant ever see that changing. Once I finish that I dont really see myself getting anything else.
