Tattoos.. yay or nay.

Its 2009, you just elected a black president and a woman candidate ran. In many of these positions of authority in both the public in private sector, in 2009, there is still institutional racism and sexism that holds back both men and women. Ethnic people and women have been around a lot longer than heavily tattooed people. If you honestly think that heavily tattooed people are going to be accepted that quickly in these organisations / positions, you need to take a good look at how long its taken just to remove much more "discriminatory" prejudices against race and sex. In other words, don't hold your breath! :D

Erm, it's already happening. I don't believe it's anything like race/sex and how long that took, I think it's just a sign of the times in general. People are more open and accepting to many things, tattoos are one of them.

I know personally of someone very high up in BHP Billiton with a full body suit of tattoo's, pretty much only hands/neck/feet aren't covered.

As long as they are white.

Very high up can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people, lets put some real meaning to it. When I am talking about positions of power in a company / government I am talking either members of the board or direct reports to the board. AFAIK none of the members of the BHP board have full body suits.

I'm in my mid-30's and have no tats. Not because I'm anti-tat or anything, I just never thought of anything symbolic enough to scar my skin forever. If I had something meaningful enough, I woulda had it done.On a side note, a friend of mine from back east is pretty tatted up. He has a 6-year-old daughter. His most recent tat is the most awesome tat I've ever seen. he had his daughter write her name and do a little drawing on his arm, then he had the drawing tatted on. It's so cool, and there's not much that could be more personal or meaningful to him. When I get home I can post a pic of it....

On a fully unrelated note...a friend of mine got a Pearl Jam tattoo.

Tattoos are like anything else...if you get a stupid one its probably cause your stupid, and it will look stupid and that will be that.

However if you have a decent sense for art and can choose something timeless and beautiful then you are get to be a walking gallery and that is awesome.

I don't have any tats although I toy with the idea of a patterned bass clef....just need to get a bit better and land some more gigs before I make that leap though...kind of a ballsy statement to make and you've got to be good enough/dedicated enough to back it up.

My roommate has one and plans for another and first one looks great (large Thor's hammer, with some sweet patterns in it), the second one might even be better (Nordic tree of life), and they are concealable, high quality and aesthetically pleasing.

My GF also has a few much smaller tats and while I don't think they are as artistic or original they certainly don't detract from my attraction to her and I enjoy tracing them with my fingers.

My Ex had a tramp stamp...it's location serves as a label, but she wanted that label and boy can she can back it up.

Wait until college is paid for then just remember, tasteful, timeless and concealable...The folks will get over it and a life lived for want of parental approval will only lead to disappointment and regret.

First statement I dont fully agree with. I could sit in my house forever, playing for the birds, but I still am a bassist. If you want a bass tattoo get it, as you said, life is too short to live with regret.

NOw I fully agree with the second part of quoted statement. I do too much for people, and not enough for myself. I live in regret all the time for being a nice guy.. [/halfway rant]

Neither of my parents liked that I got a tattoo. Tattoos aren't looked at the same way by the older generation. All they knew was sailor or biker tattoos. But they got over it. Nowdays tattoos are more like artwork. Permanent artwork yes, but then you get something that you know you'll like down the line. Get a small one in a discrete place at first. See how you like it.

That's because they wear suits :p This guy isn't on the BHP board, but i'd consider him a very successful individual. No one would know he had any work done unless he rolled his sleeves up (which most don't).

So people shouldn't get a tattoo because the the 0.01% of people who are on a corporate board or president of a country aren't covered in them, and therefore they won't be accepted? Doesn't mean you can't be successful or powerful in your work and have tattoos, even if they do have to be hidden.

Just don't get a small one with lots of detail.

Many people getting their first have all these ideas they want to incorporate, or want something detailed but want it small just because it's their first tattoo. It doesn't work like that and you'll end up with a fair sized blob in the years to come.

Very true. When I got the one on my ankle, the tattoo artist told me how small or big he could make it so you could see details.

The other thing to mention too is to go to a place where you like their work. Finding an artist that you like can be harder than deciding what tattoo to get.

If I were to do it, I would do it when on vacation or something. An artist in Cali or Florida. I dont trust my local guys.. I have seen their work. :atoz:
