TC Electronic RH750 ???!??

I read with interest when the RH450 software was distributed to a select group of users, and agreed with the general sentiment that the only improvement many people would request was the addition of a switch to control the High Frequency cut off.

My question, is if this is actually what 'Tweetertone' does? Is it a control for the high frequency cut off or just an EQ adjustment? I couldn't really tell from the user manual...

I'll scope it when I get one, if I get one. But if it behaves like the software control I tested, it's something in the order of a low pass filter, not an EQ knob.

A bit confusing, as their literature speaks to an L-Pad emulator...problem is, each L_Pad Q etc is unique (or should be) to the cab implementation, so as such, it kindof insults ones intelligence.

I don't take it that way. They're saying it's like an L-pad attenuator, which lessens the amount of signal going to the tweeter, reducing high end. All they are saying is that the tweeter control can be used to control the top end frequencies that head puts out. I think that's a valid explanation of what it does.

All amps I've ever had included a high-end/treble control...theirs is no different ( especially when (if) it's just putting back what they chose to take out).

I'm sure it's just me...

I think misunderstanding what a low pass filter is. I can only think of a few heads that have this type of control. A shelving treble control that most all amps have is not the same thing.

Second, most every head out there has an attenuation point in the upper and lower registers that is part of the design, either intentionally or unintentionally. This is no different, except it's a variable control that a user can adjust. It doesn't just put back what they've chosen to take out. It can really take the entire top off of the signal at an increasingly lower frequency as it's turned up, or you can turn it fully to the right to give an extension to the tone that goes as high as the human ear can hear more or less. That's not how a shelving control works. A shelving control typically cuts or boosts by 12-15db on most heads, and the slope isn't very steep at all. For example, a typical shelving treble control at 4khz will actually boost and cut signals in the 1k range when it's fully turned one direction or another. That's not even remotely close to what a low pass filter would behave like. The end result is something totally different. You can set a LPF at 5k and still have plenty of upper mid and treble content such that it doesn't sound muffled. It simply shaves off that top glass that some people equate with a brittle sound.

It's a very cool feature to have. Another example. You could actually boost treble on the RH750 to bring in some highs, but then use the Tweetertone to cut all that top extension above 5k or 7k. So there's still a boost in treble, but a filtering out of the extremely high frequencies.

I would buy an RH750 in a heart beat if I could be sure I had control over that feature, or the low pass filter extended to 10k, and the tweetertone just acted as a sort of passive tone control within that range...

+1... I appreciate the inclusion of a low pass type control if that is what it is...again, confusion. Why don't they just call it that? This nonsense about it taking the place of the rear control on the cab though, is jut that, nonsense.

Unless that thing is 'pinging' the cab to get the x-over point of the tweeter for each cab it is paired with (which of course it does not do) then it cannot and does not even resemble the true functionality of a properly implemented L-Pad, anymore than a Low-pass resembles a shelving type, as you point out. In fact, one could reasonably employ both the Low Pass AND the L-Pad, depending on the coincidental freq alignments between the two (unlike the absurd claim that "the control takes the L-Pad and moves it to the front on the amp".

I think the TC stuff is amazing and ground breaking, but it's a shame that they cloud it with, IMO, spin that misrepresents functionality for the sake of marketing.

Now, if they designed it with a variable Q point along with variable attenuation (completely independent of one another)...wow...then you could have (if set properly) the ultimate L-Pad without the potential drawbacks (impeadance shift and such) that some caution about.

To TC's defense, they are new to the bass amp market. It seems this kind of overthinking is what we do best. :)

What they have said AFAIK is that the tweetertone allows you to set and forget the attenuator on the cab, more or less. It works, and personally I really don't care how or why. I don't understand the rest of that amp either. :)

If that's what they said it is blatantly incorrect (unless they are providing both Q point and level adjustment).

Having played around for a while now with the TweeterTone on both the Blacksmith and the RH750, I am guessing the emulation operates as a narrow HF bandpass filter. It sure sounds like the tweeter control on other cabs I've used and owned, operates independently from all other tone control settings and of course can be stored in memory with your other saved parameters. What more could you ask for?

They don't seem ready to "open source" this design aspect just yet.

I know "5khz" has been thrown around a bit in these threads regarding the RH450, but in the scoping of the RH450 I've done the roll off actually kicks in around 7khz (I'll have to look back to know for sure), and then drops off pretty gradually after that. Nothing sharp or sudden. Just throwing that out there.
 
I wish I can get that software!!
There was never anything conclusive on this, but I believe there had to be a specific firmware on the RH450 to support the head. In other words, you couldn't use this software with a retail unit even if you had it. I never tried it on my personal head, so I can't say for certain.
