TC Sub 'N' Up Octaver! New Octave Pedal!

Alright. Preliminary report.

I really like the tone of the polyphonic setting a lot more than the sound of the Nano POG that I sold to buy this. The poly setting alone through my Shaker Vibrato makes me happy that I picked up the Sub'N'up. It sounds much more organic than the Nano POG, to my ears.

The classic setting is pretty cool. I think it's going for the OC2 tone. I like it. It seems to track pretty well. Honestly, it's been so long since I actually played through an OC2, I can't tell you how close it gets.

There is a slight lag on some of the settings, but nothing that's a deal breaker for me.

There aren't many toneprints yet. But, the default organ Toneprint is wonderful. And, the Cembolo setting is freaky and cool when you have everything except Sub 1 turned down. I see looper potential.

I will mess with the editor soon. I'm going to try to do some quick sound samples momentarily. I need to find the noise culprit in my rewired pedalboard so I apologize in advance forany bzzzz....

I got mine Friday evening and used it Saturday on a Robben Ford tune:



Mode: Poly
Dry: 12:00 - 1:00
Up Octive: 8:00 - 9:00
Sub 1: 11:00
Sub 2: Off

(I think these are settings I used)

Did a great job for this tune. I was trying to cover the synth sounds.

It tracks down to A - Ab and really chokes on G on the E string.

I did not notice any lag issues.

For me the Classic was not as pleasing as the Poly.

The organ sound is fun, but I do not have a use for it at this time.

I tossed it to my guitar player and almost did not get it back. He said he is going to purchase one.

My biggest test is going to be tracking, and how it compares to the Nano Pog. I've had many octaves that sounded better than the Pog, but they were useless because of poor tracking.

This was the feeling I got from the few demos I saw, that it was slightly more organic sounding than the actual POG. Which could be great for some as I've heard many say the POG is just too synthetic sounding. I dig that. But I also dig the POGs sound for some things. The TC could be cool to have though.

Took the plunge and just ordered. This just seems to hit all my needs for an octave pedal plus the toneprint option has me intrigued. I'm thinking of buying a Flashback and HOF for my guitar board if I like how it works with this.

Really liking the SubNup so far. Tracking is fantastic, although not as good as a POG, but waaaaay better than any other non-POG Ive had. I'd say the tracking is 95% as good as a POG.

Of course it sounds fantastic and there are lots of different sounds on tap. I'm loving the 'flanged octave' Toneprint. Overall it doesn't have that chorusy, organ-type sound like a POG although you can get kinda close if you want.

I can't believe that TC Electonic hasn't done a bass video yet! Especially as thSubnup started out as a feature on the BH amps I'm holding off until there are some decent videos or I can try one in a shop.

Mine got delivered last week, right before I went out of town. I just got around to playing with it yesterday. After a bad experience with an analogue octaver early on, I've stuck to digital - POG, MicroPOG, Organizer, Bass Whammy, Epitome...probably a few others. So my comparison is to those pedals, nothing like an OC2/3 etc.I haven't done much with the Classic setting. All comments below are regarding Poly and Toneprint.

I'd say the tracking is on par with the best pedals out there. Any differences there would be negligible to the point of not worrying about it.

I don't have any of those other octavers any more, so I can't do a side-by-side, but tone-wise I'd say Poly mode is comparable to the MicroPOG. An experienced user could probably tell them apart by ear, but they're similar.

The Toneprint section is awesome. This is my first Toneprint pedal. I'm still digging in. My biggest gripe is that I need more slots for my Toneprints. I have several different tones I'd like to have stored on the pedal. Oh well.

So far, the Toneprint I'm going with has Sub2 turned practically off, Dry and Up set to normal levels with the top 2 knobs controlling them. Sub1 is slightly softer than the Dry's volume when that's at 12; Sub1 is not set to any knobs, its volume is only controlled through the Toneprint app. Knob 3 controls the Up's Drive (linear, from 0 to max), and Knob 4 controls the Mix (0-100%) for the Modulation which is set to one of the Chorus types. That setup allows for a great variety of sounds all in one Toneprint. Drive down and chorus up for an organ-type sound. Both up for an overdriven organ. Chorus down and drive up for some guitar-ish emulation. Both down for a sound similar to the standard Poly settings.

My second biggest gripe is that I wish there was an actual fuzz or distortion included in the available modulation types you could add. If there is one, I didn't see it. Like, 12 kinds of chorus, but no distortion.

Oddly enough, there aren't currently any overdrive/distortion/fuzz Toneprint pedals available from TC Electronic. So, I'm not surprised that you didn't find any options for fuzz or distortion.

Try this trick. Find say 3 TP that you really like, then using the toneprint editor to identify the various settings, assign the knobs on the pedal such that with all fully CCW you have settings for TP1, at TDC (or 12:00 if you prefer) you have settings for TP2 and at fully CW you have settings for TP3. Load this on the pedal and you simply move between TP by setting all knobs CCW, TDC or CWThe knobs can control up to 3 parameters each and the response curves do not have to be linear or cover just one range... Of course you might get some strange stuff going on between the 3 settings, but...

Great tip! And you never know, maybe there is a gem in the inbetween settings.

Thank you., but really necessity is the mother of invention.
On my Helix I have the depth knob covering 0-80% twice. In the first sweep I have a 4 stage phaser and in the second sweep it changes to a 10 stage phaser. Works a treat.

Yeah, that's a great idea. It's similar to what I'm doing, but more complicated.

Can you set the parameter response for a single knob like this?

For example, red for drive, purple for chorus, green for tremolo?

That's what I was thinking about doing. Didn't get around to trying it.

Yes you can. I doubt it's what TCE had in mind but at the end of the day they make the tool and not the music.
