Team Trace Elliott Pt 3

My fairly new Trace combo (2 X 10, 500w, Peavey-era) has developed a god-awful vibration at high volume settings. It sounds almost as bad as a blown speaker, but I can't pinpoint the source. It seems to be coming from the area around the 10" speakers.

The cabinet has had some issues (it's not the sturdiest thing) and it's got me to wondering about pulling the head out of the combo and getting a new cab.

I like the all-in-one 2 X10 / 1 X 15 Trace cab, but I'm a bit leery of their cabs now.

What sort of cabs are you Tracers using, if not Trace cabs?

They're next to impossible to find, and the brand isn't without deserved controversy*, but I LOVE my AH130SM > Dr Bass 1260/Dr Bass 115LF rig. I also considered a couple of Eden 410 cabs before deciding on what I now have.

----------

* disclosure - I bought both cabs from the class-ads here...not from the Dr himself.

Not even sure these work, but if they do show here is a couple more pics of the V4, terrible quality but they were quickly snapped on my phone.

No recommendations?

Sounds like a voice coil perhaps? I had one of those out on a 10" driver in one of my old Trace cabs. It wasn't noticeable to the eye but it sounded horrible. You could always find a replacement speaker on Ebay or the web. I am in the process of replacing all my 10" speaks with Eminence drivers.

No recommendations?

I would try a few things, first remove a speaker to see if any bracing has come loose inside the cabinet. And second, make sure the speakers and tweeter are tightened down to the baffle board when you put it back together. Also, check to see that upon reassembly that you tighten down the speaker grille well. Also, make sure the amp chassis is good and tight within the cabinet.

There is a made in England AH350SMX at a local shop that I just demoed on my way home from work. It has the same issue that my old GP12SMX combo had: I have to max the input level to get the 'normal' LED to light up. I'm considering the acquisition of this unit via a trade but after reading this thread it looks like I'm going to have to do some surgery on it to get it 100%.

Rather than resurrect an old thread I figured I'd ask the club here about it. Any thoughts/experience/suggestions on this? Secondly, with a proper input level, should I be able to overdrive the tube? I was never able to do so with my old rig.

Thanks in advance for any help. I've missed being a TE guy for a while now, it would be great to come back to the camp. Something about the green & black light; I keep getting drawn back to it. :D

I don't think there is anything wrong with it if you can get it into the red with a heavy pop. Trace recommends setting input gain at that level. I have to wail on mine to get a red flash with a passive bass.

I was using an active bass in passive mode, EQ set flat, preamp maxed to 10, and could barely get the nominal (middle) LED to flash, much less the overload LED.

IF I do acquire this amp, I found the suggestions in the other threads to try and fix it. We'll see.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I didn't want to have to take the cab apart (sealed back and all), but I guess it's time to break out the screwdriver and have a look-see...

...and I know I'm just removing the speakers from the front! Don't worry, I wasn't going to pry apart the cab! :)

Yeah its a piece of cake to take the speakers out and hopefully find whatever is causing the resonating noises. Hopefully just something touching one of the speakers. Before doing so first take off just the grille and see if it still resonates. Might be the grille itself causing trouble.
