Team Trace Elliott Pt 3

the gp12smx was available with power sections of 250, 300,350, 400,500? 600 IIRC

it was also available as a passive preamp.

Better tone, and wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more power than GK. Built better too I think.
Can't say about Eden amps. Have never used one. But I use an Eden 210xlt cab.

Trace had two different ways of refering to their amps...

- GP12SMX refers to the preamp section; 12-band EQ, SMX compressor; does not note the power amp's output

- AH350SMX refers to an Amp Head rated@350 watts RMS; does not note the pre's config

Amps can/will be be listed either way, and you kinda have to know what the different 'codes' mean to understand what you're looking at.

Actually, 350smx says it's 350w Trace watts, and it has smx goodies.

Note, the tube in these is only good for a little warming, it's a solidstate preamp.

Then you have this bad boy... the VA400.

Trace, which older model do you recommend for a TE newbie, that isn't over $1,000?

I have never found an older model sold for more more than 1000.00 so, the options are left to buyer's preference.
Without getting into a long description of the options...
Right now, the best "older model" I have found available for the money is Tom's AH1200SM that is currently in the classifieds for sale.

Its already been to British Audio Service (BAS) for service and is ready to Rock and Rumble.

You can get an AH250 for what 2-300 bucks or you can get his AH1200 for less than 600. You'll add shipping to either option and they'll be about the same amount in shipping costs. the 350-600's are running just shy of what Tom is asking and you're getting heck of a better deal on Tom's.

Or... you can get an AHxxxSM in a combo from 2x10, 4x10, 1x15...
Depends whether you like a combo or a stacked rig. You can always add more cabs to either setup, too.
I prefer a stack cause I can change the config more and with the AH1200Sm I can run four 8ohm cabs on each channel or 2 4ohm cabs on each channel.

I believe it is the ONLY head Trace makes that will run at a 2 ohm minimum load. the rest are all 4 ohm.

I have seen some ridiculously high prices on them as well. But, if you shop around you can find killer deals on just about any model TE amp.
If I was shopping for a TE amp and had a grand to play with...
I'd buy Tom's AH1200SM and a couple used 1048H cabs.
Here is Tom's AH1200SM - for sale..:crying: sorry, I hate seeing someone selling one of these...

Eventually ending up with a rig like this... 2x1048H and 2x 1518T.
Oh, Wait... That is my rig....:ninja:

or this except this is an AH600SMX head.

You can run this setup on an AH1200SM... :hyper: :bassist:

Between what you can do with a 250 and 2 cabs (ruin a soundman's night in a 400 cap club), and freight costs, grab something local. Unless you really need to pulverise kidneys. Tom's amp sure is a bargain.

Note that 500w peak watts on a 250w Trace is quite capable of putting out pretty well clean 500w attacks all night long. The 250w rating is totally clean power. I don't know if it's a continuous rating but certainly no microsecond burst bullhockey.
