TecAmp amplification club.....is there such a thing yet

You guys got me convinced about the Puma 900 tone-wise, no question.

It looks however that the Bonafide could be even better for my application:
- 2 channels: ideal for doubling
- Impedance flexibility: could use either 112 (8Ohms), 212 (4Ohms) or both (2.67Ohms) for the real big stages.
(6-piece electro-pop band, my bass competes with a LOUD bass drum, Moog synths and LOUD sequenced loops)

But issues like overheating in bridged mode, unreliability have been reported like 2-3 years ago.
I've also seen a member wanting to sell his Bonafide along the way, plus I've read Richard Bona no longer uses his due to multiple power shutdowns.

Does anyone know whether the issues with the Bonafide have been solved?

In other words, would you recommend the newer versions?
Or are there so many inherent problems with it that I'd better stick to the Puma 900?

No problems with my Bonafide ! I use it with Epifani 1x12's, 3x10 or 4x10. Sometimes I mix those cabs :)

Just got my Puma 500 last week, 900 Dollars New, including Bag and Shipping, I've been wanting this one since last October.

The sound is great, fits all my Basses, and after having this Head, I literally set the whole Preamp Flat on my onboard preamps, and almost flat EQ on the Head. Same EQ and gain setting for every one of my Bass, this is something that is rather impossible to do on any other Heads IME.

I also carry only the head, and take whatever cabinet provided, and it never fails. I also use it for practising, connecting my Computer to the Aux in (they even supply the cable for this, excellent) and use a headphone. Really simple if I want to practise while I'm travelling.

I'm endorsed by MarkBass for two good years, have an Eden after that (My MTD + MarkBass is not a very good match to my ears), and this amp is probably the combination of Eden's warmth, with the headroom and weight of a MarkBass. And punchier than both!

So, I'm in the club I guess

A question for you Puma 500/900 players:

Would you see consequences if one connected two instruments to a Puma on the following pattern?:
- bass guitar to external preamp (Monique), then to Puma's effects return
- upright to Puma's instrument input

With Bonafide costing almost 1/3 more than Puma 900, I thought of this as a way to cut down expenses, (will be ordering Baer cabs too!) but it's a pure blind guess and I wouldn't go for it should it be unsafe.

In virtually all amps, plugging into the effects return will remove the preamp input from the circuit... i.e., it will replace the amp preamp with, in your case, the Monique and 'turn off' the input circuit of the amp.

Not sure if the Bonafide has separate effects loops for each channel. If it does, that would work nicely. Also, the Bonafide is a very rare 'true stereo amp', and you can actually assign each preamp to a separate power amp (mostly useful for stereo effects).

So, if my understanding is correct, plugging into the effects return would "mute" the signal coming from instrument input and only the signal from effects return would be treated further and sent to the speakers? I would then have to unplug "effects return" whenever I need to use to the instrument's input?

If that is the case, you've got my question answered spot-on! And a very useful argument in favor of the Bonafide. I confirm there's one effects loop per channel on Bonafide.

Yes. Wait for a day before you buy to get a couple more guys to verify what I posted, since I did not check this out specifically with the Puma. However, I'm 99%+ sure that I am correct.

The dual effects loops on the Bonafide should work great for what you are trying to do. Also, the Genz Shuttle Max 9.2 has similar dual effects loops for each channel. It only has a single channel input (unlike the two true separate channels on the Bonafide), but I think that head would work also for what you are trying to do for less dollars.
