Tech 21 bass fly rig

I have never gotten along with the EQ on older Sansamp products. Further disclaimer: I don't know how the Sansamp section in the guitar Fly Rig relates to the one in the bass version.

Still, I was impressed when I tried out a Fly Rig 5 yesterday. I'm thinking about it for guitar, but I couldn't help noticing that the Sansampp section sounded pretty neutral through a PA with the reverb off.

Obviously, the next step was to check it out as a clean bass preamp, just for giggles...

We plugged a GK MB Fusion 500 into a Markbass 4x10. My buddy played a variety of styles on passive Fenders (a PJ and a Jazz), plus an active Dimension V.

I started with the G-K front end set to the "flat" position: Contour off, bass down a hair from noon, low and upper mids at 1:00, and treble at around 10:00. With the Gain and Master at about 9:00, pad off, it was missing a little something with the 5-string, but engaging the deep switch fixed that. Classic MB Fusion- loud, articulate and punchy.

Next, I bypassed the G-K front end by plugging the Fly Rig into the effects return. With the gain low (about 9 o'clock) and the tone controls flat, I had to max the Level control to get equivalent volume.

The mid control was nicely voiced, there was no lack of bottom end, and crafting a tone was easy- bass at 1:00, and roll off a little treble. Set that way, the Fly Rig wasn't scooped at all. It was a little less articulate than the G-K tube preamp, but it sounded smooth and full.

The store was closing, so we didn't have a chance to check it out at higher gain settings.

Still, for my normal clean tones, I would be quite happy to gig the FR5 with a 5-string bass. In silent stage situations, I could throw it in my string pouch along with my IEM's, a couple of cables and a headstock tuner, and be ready to go.

IMO, the extra features on the Bass Fly Rig should just be icing on the cake.

I've seen it's price in Europe today.. 399€.
It's a little too much for me since I wanted to use it as a travelling board instead of my zoom B3 and I already have a Pedaltrain mini based on a very similar setup to the FlyRig as my main board. I thought more something like 299€ since its street price was announced at $299. Well, I can wait.

I was thinking the same thing really. Higher price than I was hoping for this side of the pond. I'm currently using a PT Nano and can get most of the tone the fly rig offers - but the idea of a gigbag pocket size unit still intrigues me. I can wait a while though. Besides, I'm getting married this year - I don't think my fiance would be terribly impressed with me plonking £300 down on a pedal which replicated my existing pedals!

She'd be negatively impressed! :D
Anyway yes, can't justify its price at the moment, but I understand it since the VTBass DI alone is priced at 270€ and my "old" VTbass 2nd edition now sells for 200€.

349€ would seem pretty fair

299$
/1.125 EUR/USD = 265€
*1.05 reserve for forex swing = 278.25€
*1.25 taxes = 347.82€
+peanuts for bulk shipping

I can't figure out any good reason to add another 50€. It's not like they don't know we'll all look at the price in USD and order from overseas if it's substantially cheaper.
