The Über-Jay Mark2

The red veneer had become quite dull after all the sanding. I wiped it and wiped it. Better, but still dull. Then I used a soft erasure, working it along the grain; then brushed away the dust. The result was quite surprising :)

Nice work (as usual)!

Seems to me the red veneer would be cool for the entire top of a bass.

I had the same idea(and production method) for the Luminlays awhile back and was looking into how to them done. Guess they got there first. :bawl:

Good execution of their part. I found the Luminlay referenced in another TB post.

Just checkin' things out as I usually do!

:D

These blue dots might just work beautifully on the Purpleheart f/b I am planning to use soon :)

This build will not likely have side dots though. The block inlays are BIG enough ;)

Hi there, quick update on this build.

The end of fretboard needed to be shaped more slap-friendly.

Early stage. I've used a sand block. Do you guys use different tools/technique for this task?

Almost done. Looking at this picture I just realized that I have not rounded the sharp lower edge of the FB.... I did it on my Jay-Dee when I replaced the fingerboard, to avoid painful collision with fingers. It can be seen in this pix - under the Slap-Egg® ;) Scroll down to the second picture of the post.

It works really well...mmm...so...why did I not do it on the first Ü-J? :hmm: well, I'll do it and post a pix.

Basically now body and neck are ready. Should be able to get into the final stage in the next few days - once the engraving on cavity cover is done.

a good week to you all :bassist:

Hi there,

Über is ready for lacquer. End and top of fingerboard are now nicely shaped. All pores and little imperfections have been filled with sawdust/CA and sanded. I've run the radius block once again, just lightly.

Tomorrow I'll collect the cavity cover and sand it just enough to fit the body. The laser guys :ninja: will engrave name, date and trivia on neck pocket and back of headstock.
Which means that I'll do nothing till Monday. Then is lacquer time ;)

Regretfully, no pictures :rollno:

ciao :bassist:

Today I managed to get my cavity cover engraved :) It looks quite neat. It carries the name of the bass, my name and the year. Now this dude has to be completed before 2012 ;)

Since I had neck and body with me I decided to laser-sign both. I originally intended to hand write on the neck pocket. This way looks better to me.
I had completely forgotten those two little holes though - ask me what they're doing there.... So I had to find a way to shorten the line. There.

Lastly, the back of the headstock is engraved with the name of the bass. I'll use that as signature or a brand if you wish. I don't intend to use any logo of sorts on the headstock.

I'd rather have the owner telling me what represents him best and inlay his very own logo on the face of the headstock.

I think the bass itself doesn't need one.

I'll sand these down a bit to clean up the burning marks and that's it.

thanks for reading this far :bassist:

Thank you!

that's such a cool and interesting touch, the laser engraving is a brilliant idea, out of interest how deep are the words engraved into the wood?

They should be about 1mm deep - less I think. I had them run the laser two times, just to give it a sharper look. Did a test on the same woods before committing to this and at that depth it seemed to work well even after enough sanding to clean up the burning marks.

Looks great.

Ok, I'll ask - what are those two holes doing there?

I was afraid someone would ask ;) Truth is - I have no idea. Looking back at pictures taken right after routing the neck pocket, I see no holes. A few days later...there they are. Weird.
Martians do exist :ninja:
