The 2008 Stanley Cup Playoff Thread

Evgeni_Nabokov_2005a.jpg

NABBY!

As much as I love Brodeur, I have to admit that Nabokov is the best goalie in the league right now. Watch out for Tolskala (or how ever you spell that one), he is going to be great as well. Although Brodeur is still the only goalie in the world that can win 40+ games every year with a complete no name team in front of him.

If it wasn't for Toskola the Leafs would have lost a lot more games in my opinion. We actually got him from the Sharks so he got to watch Nabokov on a regular basis.

Is is crazy all the goalies that have come from that team. Brizgoliv and the Calgary goalie all were backups to Nabokov at one point. If Toskala can play an entire year like he did the second half and he will easily be top three in the league. The Leafs have a lot of great young players coming up, now we just have to not trade then all away for old washed up guys.

Granted, Brodeur isn't what he was, but he hasn't lost much of his game. He's not that old, and in my opinion, he's the best money goalie of the last 20 years. There are so many incredible young netminders these days, though. It seems like just about everyone has someone super-human between the pipes.

Brodeur will go down as the greatest goalie of all time. He will retire with the most wins and shutouts while playing a good chunk of his career on a less than stellar team. Roy was good, but he always had a great team in front of him. Think of what Brodeur would do if he played for Detroit or Ottawa or Dallas or even Montreal.

I'm surprised at how well the Rangers are doing against NJ. I would have predicted Devils in 6 before the first game, but after two I think the reverse may very well happen.

I really don't think anyone's going to take out Ovechkin. He is the NHL's star and the league is going to use him as their poster boy to get back onto ESPN. Taking out Ovechkin would be career suicide. That said, I think it's Caps in 6.

Of course, living and going to school in Boston it would be nice to see the B's do well, but it's going to be Habs in 4. The B's just don't have a prayer. If they had some offense going, and if their defense hadn't broken down, Thomas could probably carry the rest, but that's not happening.

Penguins in 5 over Ottawa. Sens just don't have the kind of team that can stand up to Crosby, Malkin, and Mallone.

Western Conference? I got no clue. All I know is Nashville and Minnesota are lame teams because they weren't franchises when I got into hockey.

Bryzgalov was drafted by the Ducks and stayed with the Ducks before being traded to Phoenix. Kiprusoff was on the Sharks though. And the Sharks made some excellent draft picks in 94/95.

Kiprusoff: 116th in 95
Toskala: 90th in 95
Nabokov: 219th in 94

And all three are starting goaltenders for their teams.

You are correct. Must have been another goalie that I was thinking of. There is another former Nabakov backup that is starting somewhere.

+ 1.

One of the reasons I can't stand the NHL anymore is because the Red Wings get stuck playing these medicore boring watered down teams. Teams like Nashville and Columbus are bad for the game. No one wants to see these teams.

Detroit needs to be in the East, where they can play REAL franchises on a regular basis. Detroit needs to play teams like Toronto, Boston, New York, Philly, NJ, Pittsburg on a regular basis. Enough of this NASHVILLE bullcrap.

I miss the Jets. And the Nordiques, although playing out of Colorado isn't such a bad thing. Does California really need 3 hockey teams? Probably not. Does New York really need 2 teams? Again, no, because the Islanders suck and from what I've heard usually have an attendance of less than 10,000. Relocate some teams back to Canada damnit!
