The 2008 Stanley Cup Playoff Thread

Brodeur will go down as the greatest goalie of all time. He will retire with the most wins and shutouts while playing a good chunk of his career on a less than stellar team. Roy was good, but he always had a great team in front of him. Think of what Brodeur would do if he played for Detroit or Ottawa or Dallas or even Montreal.

I agree, but he had a few years with a great team. I miss the good ol' boys like Stevens, Daneyko, Holik, Neidermayer. The teams that won cups!

I miss the Jets. And the Nordiques, although playing out of Colorado isn't such a bad thing. Does California really need 3 hockey teams? Probably not. Does New York really need 2 teams? Again, no, because the Islanders suck and from what I've heard usually have an attendance of less than 10,000. Relocate some teams back to Canada damnit!

As long as Bettman has a pulse, that won't happen.
Quebec will never get another team, Winnipeg is the only place that I could see getting an expansion (although that wouldn't be for years and years).

Islanders have far too much history to leave, and considering they have the smallest arena in the league, it makes sense their attendance is smaller than most.

And the teams in California...if they keep doing well, they won't leave (that was directed at the Ducks and Sharks, and while the Ducks are getting stomped this series, they are still good teams). Kings, once again, have too much history to leave.

If there is anything the NHL likes to do is preserve older franchises. Heck, think of all the teams that have relocated within the past few years. Winnipeg, Quebec, and Hartford. All former WHA teams...If those were teams that existed in the NHL from the get-go, there would be no way they would have left...

Absolutely. The Flyers finally played a good game.

And despite Sean Avery pestering Marty all night, Marty managed some great saves. I do have an issue though with Bryce Salvador, the Devils' new guy getting a delay of game right after another Devils penalty causing a 5-on-3 that allowed the Rangers to score.

Devils made a few crucial mistakes, but managed to cover their butts for it long enough. All and all, a great game.

Heh, don't worry dude.

You can equate Bryce Salvador to our Nicholas Backman who we just got a month or so ago. The guy is an alright defensemen but keeps taking stupid penalties that always screw us.

+1 on some iffy officiating. Some borderline calls, including the delay of game call. Great game, though. A real evenly fought battle. Both goalies were great, with the difference being a couple of flukey goal on both sides.
So much for home ice in this one, eh? Come on Rangers!!!!

(by the way, if the Rangers ever closed up shop, I'd become a Devils fan. You've got to like the way they approach the game, and from Burke to Brodeur, they've always had great goaltending)

You're right, all the goals were pretty much flukes. And you're also right, they've always had great goaltending. However, they better start farming a replacement for Marty... he's only got a few good years left unless he pulls a Dominik Hasek and plays til he's 45.

Flyers Penalty Kill was on point last yesterday. Biron played really well considering it is only his second playoff game ever.

During game 1 of the Flyers/Caps series they showed a stat about the effectiveness of star players in their playoff debut. IIRC, Gretzky had a goal and an assist in his debut, Crosby only a goal, as well as other star players having only 1 or 0 points in their debuts.

Stats are stats, and I hate to jump the gun, but I don't think AO is going to amount to much this series. I don't want to take anything away from Ovechkin, I think he is an awesome hockey player (better than that whiny, diving Crosby) but I think there are too many individuals on the Caps and not enough team players for the Caps to make it.

Maybe I'm biased.....oh yeah......GO FLYERS!!!!!!!

MAaaan, that was a tough one Lowell! A 3 goal lead in less than 4 minutes is usually a good sign you're gonna get a win.

You know they're already calling it "THE hit", right? Talk about a game changer! That one play ignited the house, and when they got the first goal back you could feel that table already tilting...

As soon as the Flames scored their first goal I turned to my fiance and told her if the Sharks didn't score the next goal they would lose. I've watched the team long enough to know. :atoz:
