I know a guy that makes those things... one's dark-stained light, hard Cherry and the other's Curly Maple but I have some dark bee's wing Wenge if you wanted a heavy one for some reason.

The best TP's I have found are the Hill model ebony, or rosewood. Lemur also has really good quality TP's. I have never had a tailpiece break on me. The steel cable I have had problems with though. In particular the clamps. I always use hammer crimps now. Never had one break(or even move for that matter).
I really like the Pecanic walnut tailpiece I put on my Pollmann. I'm also using his braided tp cord. I believe that less dense woods can help some basses.

Since I'm not playing out much right now I'm tweaking the bass. It's still in progress. I'm gonna do something else with the jack at some point and I've been playing with strings again. That's a Spiro Stark E, Mittel A/D, and Oliv G on there. Sounds damn good.
His TP is super light Cherry and carved perfectly. It's really opened up some stuff on that bass that the factory TP I had on there before was choking off.
I was able to get my Stark E on there working well and the Oliv G is just one of those, I have it so I'm using it, things. It's a fantastic string.
Mostly I'm happy to be able to mess with stuff and not worry about making a gig. I have always had to hurry through changes on the instrument to be sure I could sound right on a gig that night or the next. At least now I can do this at my leisure.

It really is very good. I like that old school torch look too. It's very synchronous with the fingerboard line.
I'm struggling a bit with the amplified sound as it is such a live TP the sound gets a bit howly to fast, as such the pickup clipped on the afterlength tames that a bit. Another little detail I'll get worked out eventually.

I love that maple. I almost went that maple route but decided for a toned down matching the fingerboard look kind of thing.
Oh I also noticed a significant difference in tone and note length with my bow quiver hanging there now where before it didn't make any difference. Now I have to make a bow stand and carry yet another thing to my gigs.

Wow that is really nice Phil. Jake does some fine work. I also like seeing that Olive G string with the Spiros on the E, A & D. I've been using this mixed set for about 2 months and it is the best string combo I've found hands down! Shoot, now I'll be thinking about those TP's.
