The Aviation Enthusiasts Thread!

Very nice Owl.

When the ol' L188 made her turn to taxi out, I could smell the kerosene and I think I got a bit of grit in my eye from the prop wash.

I am old enough to remember when you could stand behind a low fence and watch as the passengers boarded the plane using the portable stairs. When the plane turned like that you would be in the prop wash, smelling the exhaust, having your shirt blown about and yes I did get grit in my eye back then.

I miss those days:crying:

Thanks for the memories.

So do I! One of my VERY favorite sounds (mechanical) is those Allison T-501's spooling up. And I too remember a time you could watch the planes without fea of being arrested.

Saw one of these:

-flying around today.

On a somewhat related note, my two older sons are in the Civil Air Patrol and had attended some glider orientation flights this past weekend. The younger of the two made a quick video from the day, neat stuff:

I'll post some pics as well when I get them all downloaded from the camera.

EDIT - a few pics:

The glider was a Blanik L23/TG-10:

They also had some training and orientation with an older AF Schweitzer SGS 2-33

It was an 8 hour day of training, maintaining and flying. Truly awesome thing! I really wish that I had done this stuff when I was their age!!

Those pics take me back. My dad was big into CAP. He was into radios, too, so he was the state communications officer. There were a couple of comm vans. One was a converted bread truck. I was too young to be a cadet but I would go on the exercises with him. Great fun.

Had this sight greet me this afternoon. We were sitting out back and what flies over? A P-47 and P-40 flying in formation. :) :) :)

Hey, Relic, I saw these two planes flying east over Rockaway Beach this evening at about 7:15pm. I heard two prop engines, and just happened to have my binoculars with me.

When I looked through them, I was surprised to see a silver P-47 D Thunderbolt, and a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk.

An unexpected pleasure.

What a small world.

Mike
