The Aviation Enthusiasts Thread!

Man, you must have killer eyesight to be able to tell what kind of planes those are! They could have used you as a plane spotter in WW2! ;)

Relic - "Don't shoot, those are our boys!"

Lol! Nah it's not that hard to do at all. Planes of that era have very distinctive shapes. That, plus having volunteered and/or participated in the Reading PA WW2 airshow for like 12 years, I've gotten damn good at ID-ing aircraft :)

Hey, Relic, I saw these two planes flying east over Rockaway Beach this evening at about 7:15pm. I heard two prop engines, and just happened to have my binoculars with me.

When I looked through them, I was surprised to see a silver P-47 D Thunderbolt, and a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk.

An unexpected pleasure.

What a small world.

Mike

awesome! It's funny because I posted this on FB and two of my cousins who live south of me had also seen them. They seem to have attracted a lot of attention.

My wife and I were sitting outside in the back when I heard them. We live near a small airport so civilian/small airplane sounds are really common.. as soon as I heard these suckers I knew they weren't Cessna's or something like that. Sure enough as they got closer I saw them. I think the P-47 even had D-Day stripes. That made my day. My wife was all like "oh god would you calm down already..." I cant help it, I'm a plane junky.

So I finally had a chance to see "Red Tails" tonight.... from a history geek perspective, the movie kinda fell short. Lots of inaccuracies. Having met a few of these guys several times at airshows and such, I think the movie really didn't live up to what it should have been. I think these guys deserve better. That said, the special effects and imagery? wow, awesome. The movie has an almost "comic book" flavor to it with various characters doing predictable things but all in all, until a better movie comes along to do these guys honor, this one will have to do. It works :)

+1 - great movie if you have no idea of the real story behind the Tuskegee Airmen. I liked the "comic book" feel of the movie, though.

Fwiw, I just noticed this thread, but I've been an aviation buff my whole life (thanks grandpa!) and been working in Naval Aviation for the last 13 years or so. I work on horizon gyros for the F/A-18's now as a civilian, and used to be a comm/nav tech in a previous (enlisted) life.

As an Air Force brat, I grew up around airplanes and have fallen in love.

As a little kid, I had F-111's and F-15's flying overhead. We moved, and then it was mostly C-17's and KC-10's.

I always wanted to be an F-14 pilot despite growing up on an Air Force base. The Tomcat was beautiful, but when my eyesight started going in the third grade, I was disappointed that I'd never be able to fly one.

I'd be quite happy flying a Strike Eagle or Super Hornet.

Regardless, I'm looking to get my PPL in a few years. Debating if I want fixed wing or rotary first.

A picture I took of my very favourite plane at Hendon (though I'd pick an FB.VI over any bomber variant...):

If you look up the specs this bird carried almost as much payload as a B17, flew the pathfinder for same, often returned to the hanger with more than it's fair share of shrubbery attached to the gear. Seems they liked to keep 'em real low.

Sad side story the last man alive that knew how to carve the center spar for these approached the current owners of deHav and asked if they'd be interested in keeping the knowledge alive. He was willing to just show anyone who was interested. The suits turned him down, flat. Rumour has it it wasn't exactly our best side as it were.
Now had any of the floor grunts knew about this they'd have done whatever it took. This man was a living icon to WWII buffs aircraft enthusiasts, A/C assemblers. That knowledge is gone now.........

Some of my models:

Anyone play Il-2, CLoD or Rise of Flight? My good computer is broken and I'm having flight sim withdrawals!

Very nice, t77mackie.

A P47 Razorback, an Arado AR 234, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arado_Ar_234
and a Mosquito.

I built most versions of the Mosquito as a kid, but I don't recognize this version; which one is it?

Mike

The Thunderbirds are practicing over my house at this moment. I'm trying to get my gal to take pics of them. I hope I can post them up a bit later for ya.

My fav airplane is the P-38 lightning. I think it's the best looking thing that was put in the air. I love it's history as well.

Put my little puddle jumper in the shop last week. This was in the hangar. Loves me some Cub.

Prettiest airplane EVER.

Hi! I'm a Former Falcon Fixer. (Say that fast 3X);)
...........Back in 1980 the F-16 still had not been officially named, and the Battlestar Galactica movie/tv series was still very popular with it's Viper space fighters all of the rage. Everyone wanted the plane to be named the Viper, and many of the pilots even wore Viper pins on their flight suits. When the plane was officially named the "Fighting Falcon" we all had a dying duck fit.

With the intake, and that canopy.....shoulda been the Mustang II.

So here are a few. Sorry for the poor quality, it's from a cell phone camera :) You can see how low they get though.
