Find a store that has them and hold them. You will know which one is yours. It will speak to you. (It whispers in your ear) with the EPI you may find it feels just right and save a boatload of money. Then later if you want to upgrade it you can always swap out pickups and bridges and pots and tuners to bring it up to a Gibson standard. However. You may find it’s just right the way it is.
I bought a Gretsch JR Jet short scale bass that I love every time I pick it up. It cost me $300! It’s an awesome bass. I swapped out the bridge for a high mass bridge and put some labella deep talkin flats on it but other than that it doesn’t need a thing. The tuners are great. I like them better than the tuners on my American Mustang. The pick ups are good. I may swap them out someday but I keep asking myself why. I have the money to do that. But so far it’s like why. I had intended to do that but there’s no need to. So why…
So if you don’t have the budget don’t be afraid to go for the cheaper version. But most importantly hold her and you will know if she’s the one. (She will whisper to you- pick me, pick me!)

These points are all true. But the heart wants what it wants. Fortunately I’m very happy with the SBMM short scale Ray. I can’t imagine the T bird would be that much better. Well maybe.

Feels like picking the fly pewp out of the pepper debating if a StingRay is a 7ender or not, and I love my 'Ray no less for being a 'Ray. A short scale 'Ray is tremendously appealing just as a Nanobass X4 is appealing.

In another times' forgotten space SumGai who calls himself Dogface crafts a fretless purpleheart Thunderbird with an ebony fingerboard. It is The Heaviest bass I have ever seen or played. He practiced without an amp. We were not short of amplification there.

Is a Volkswagen Beetle a Porsche? There should be a clear line drawn between "Produced by" and "Designed by," and then everyone is in the right.

It's a MusicMan StingRay designed by Leo Fender and if it had been up to 7ender, Leo wouldn't have been allowed to make guitars or basses for the rest of his life....

It is The Heaviest bass I have ever seen.

My 'Ray, as best I can determine, was completed somewhere between February and April, 1979. The luthier took the neck off as part of the bass' rehab, and I neglected to ask for the date. He got to play with the neck twice because the MicroTilt on the three bolt neck was (presumably) new to him. The instructions for the MicroTilt are on the hang tag that I still have, and gave that to the luthier.

Right now My StingRay is a sweet, sweet bass. It came new in 79 with GHS Brite Flats, and I installed a set when the bass came back from Santa's Workshop. I'm as close to Bernard Edwards tone as possible, except for this darn Phil Jones Suitcase combo that reproduces my bass as is.

So is My 'Ray a 7ender? I say, Yes.

What I'm considering is trying EB Group IV flats on the 'Ray in January when the 2022 Music Theory for the Bass Player cohort begins. My intent as a coach is to take the course again as a non-participant as I track parallel with the students. And I'm way busy with the practice group(s). We meet again today

Two things came to mind as I read this.
1. I think the Ray looked a bit nicer with the colorful pick guard on it. I understand the "as original" appeal, but my aesthetic tends toward more colorful.
2. Your Brite Flats will probably only be hitting their stride in Januvary, so I would hope you keep them around in case you decide that the EB flats are not quite what holds your interest.

Here’s a holiday “Gametime” plan; A buddy from New Jersey (yes, a Yankees fan…we enjoy that!) coming over tomorrow to watch a little football-

I’m making “Southwest Pastrami Reuben (wait for it!…) Quesadillas

When you live on the Navajo Nation, and locally source your Reuben sandwich supplies at Basha’s (remember?…”Two Sheep Apart ) this is what results.

Individual packets of “pastrami”, local New Mexico tortillas And local “Mrs. Klein’s “ sweet relish from Phoenix to make homemade Russian Dressing. C’mon folks- don’t skip this part- can use organic or sugar free catsup and make your own mayonnaise if you prefer! I took the lazy way out!

Silver Floss canned sauerkraut not available, but Libby’s will do. Pre shredded “Food Club” Swiss cheese sets up the table for a tasty quesadilla that will remind you both of New York, and the gorgeous Southwest.

Oh, what’s this, then??

Shopping list for trip to town- 2 and 1/2 hrs away…. Yeah, drawbacks of living here!

Xmas can’t be Xmas without a glass of scotch or whiskey on the rocks and a cigarette. Remember ol’ Deano??

I'm truly pleased with the Brite Flats! The G string sounds great, the A and E strings are authoritative, and hearing some great sweetness in 12th FretLand on the D. I feel the stiffness is reasonable, and tension and tone feels even from string to string, and up and down the fretboard.

Putting flats on a bass is a serious proposition to me because it's at least a 10 month commitment to see what I think.

There's more to the story of the original black pickguard than I told. TL;DR the original stays for now

I love sandwich fixins on tortillas! When we have traditional Thanksgiving fare, I always make some turkey/dressing/cranberry tacos. Works great with ham or BBQ as well.
