The Combo Club

When I started playing bass in 1972 I owned this rather craptastic geetar amp, and used for both bass and guitar:

I gave away or sold it in '73 and although I owned a few (much!) nicer guitar combos over the years I never used them for bass.

Fast forward to last weekend. I'm dropping off my second and last 115 cab to a TBer friend and we get to talking about what I'll be doing for a new practice rig now that my beloved but immutable 15/6/1 monster is gone. I had a little trade credit balance on my side and my buddy pulled out the top 110 airhead cab in this pic, amp not included but easy enough to find another G-K MB200, MB500, or something in that ballpark to stuff in there:

And so in a few days or so I just may be able to stake a claim in this Club. First up will be brand new a Phil Jones PB-200, beacuse shiny things are shiny.


Backstory on that cab here: Mojo Sonic 1x10 Lounge cab clone It sounds quite good actually, and not having to build up a new rig myself is a huge bonus at this particular time, as I'm completely slammed with NAMM obligations.

My PJB combo is the cornerstone of my alleged studio. Sound and camera are working great for the first time. Able to play, monitor, and access video to play or record.

Recorded myself this morning. Jumped seamlessly to our Zoom practice group. Everything works! The speakers are off on the combo, the signal is high and low passed, there's the combo's limiter, and hallelujah it all works as expected. This is the first time, ever.

First real bass amp I had was one of these. I later got a second one-top and cab. Stupidly sold them.

Good evening, combo-loving family!

Another quick and decent week, besides the crying, feuding, arguing, tattling, whining, moaning, and the occasional light bulb in the brain going off. In other words, a typical week in elementary school. Around 70 days left and they'll be reading my resignation letter next Wednesday night at the board meeting. It's all good though. I found out today that we will indeed be having our talent show in May...my last one hosting it. The kids are excited and so am I. I will be on stage for at least a couple of numbers, whether it's playing bass, guitar, or even the Cajon. I don't care...I wanna rock!

Picked up a second set of headphones for #2 to use while recording. She's been enlisted to singing and percussion duties and we're having fun sharing the dream too. In fact, we've been working on 'Airplane's White Rabbit and there'll be a special guest star bass player who also resides on this board. We're trying the sharing-tracks-thru-technology approach. Cross your fingers for us.

I also grabbed this week a $49 Donner reverb pedal I'm hoping will work with my bass as well as into the latest Foxy Voxy combo. I always worry about losing bass response if it's not built for bass, but I couldn't resist the low price and small footprint. My board is looking lean and mean right now.

Finally, though I'm sure everyone forgot (and why not?), my Orange Terror Bass came back a week or so ago and sadly, sounds fantastic. I say sadly because I had visions of getting rid of it, but dang, the uber tubiness is there without any fizzing, popping, or the terrible fading away of sound. It sounded better than ever in its shakedown cruise and may have to hang around a bit longer as I'll be trying its DI to record with next. Another cross your fingers if you please.

Miles, good hunting to capture Passinwind for the club. I'd been hoping to land him for many moons without so much as a whiff. I think it'd be a great catch so bribe him with everything you have to offer. Maybe one of these babies will do it (see attachment below. Courtesy of Mrs. iagtrplyr).

Funny, that, about the pedal because I just swapped out a Pigtronix Distnortion Micro for a few spacebucks that could be transmogrified as a Joyo Orange Juice Never can have too many amps and an Orange Terror is way up there on the shortlist

Elated because this alleged "studio" is working seamlessly. The really big deal is I don't have to set up and break down to record a video. Today was a great test (it passed) for a live Zoom Ethics Day workshop (mentioned slightly upthread). Working with these students makes me really happy!

My son, the recently midlife teacher, had an ethics situation last week. For the "your greatest influence" writing assignment in his English class one student wrote a glowing testimonial to ... him! Of course, as a proud papa, I didn't see any content in the essay to disagree with, but it was rife with grammar and punctuation ..., uh, "opportunities."

OK on EB-0; just got back from setting up R40. R100 would be overkill for the room. Coulda used my Bassman 25.

Two groups came up with two different answers, and I'm not certain they're not both right. I know the choice I made. Gave them a great deal more to chew on than the narrow problem I presented.

A simple problem like plagiarism is too cut and dry. A guilty count on that charge = immediate expulsion / job termination IME. Not much to discuss. The more problematical one I present (drawn from RL) how to write the story when the source volunteers confidential information. ("off the record" only exists on television, ain't no such thing.) Students ask for details, and work out a solution guided by their teacher.

What's awesome to me is the high school age students are learning both ethics and reasoning.

What I reason is my own combo is now an integral part of my total workspace. With a full time connection to the computer, I step up the game ...

Acquiring a simple R40 means I can do a @GonePlaid style gig without moving anything big.
