Record *or broadcast* from home or a studio. My employer continued its monthly concert series via the internet.
Well, am giving up on my rather exotic quest for a small lightweight bass combo with a speaker-out jack... Have decided instead to go for a more standard type of 1x8 practice combo. And I don't really want it for practice either, as I have my larger Ampeg home stuff for that. -What I'd mostly use it for would be at an acoustic garage jam, and also at a church performance with one acoustic guitarist, a tambourine player, and 3 to 4 folk singers.
IMO the PJB dbl 4 stuff is real nice, but a bit costly? (And very low to the ground for this bad back guy too...) I also seriously considered the Vox B50 bass combo, but some of the demos I've heard of it's sound have turned me off..
~So far, what is leading in my search is the Orange Crush 25W 108. ~I've heard lot's of good things about the Orange sound; it's not overly pricey, has a built-in tuner, and at 22lbs is a manageable size that's only a little over my 18lb limit. And I feel it's 25W sh be enough for my needs in this situation. Any other suggestions re 1x8 combos (and/or opinions re the Orange) will be greatly appreciated...
The Rumble 40 has a DI and is 18 pounds. I haven't played it, but it has a lot of fans. I think it's the same as the 100, less 60 watts and with a smaller speaker. The 100 is a great amp.
Yep, 40W w/ 1x10. But no speaker out(like the 100).

Combos with a single 15 and 100 watts seem to be the starting point for a balanced DI feature.
Listened very closely with my good K275 cans to 3 demos each of the Vox B50 110 and the Orange Crush B25 108. I'm sure the Vox is very good for what it does, and ya sure can't beat it's 10lb carry weight!! -But when comparing tones I liked the Orange far better, preferring it's warmer sound a great deal over the Vox's harsher tones.. (To my ears anyway? ~YMMV.)
So I guess I'll hafta pay the the 12 addl lbs weight penalty of the little Orange... Also the Orange is some $80 cheaper, which strikes me as a little screwy when you check out the quality of both of 'em?

Someone here know offhand if the little Orange combos use the traditional Fender tone stack: dime the mids, turn the bass and treble way down. Kind of like licorice — people who like it really like it. But if you're looking for something else, walk on by ....

Thought about recommending this one even before Morrighan mentioned it. Greywoulf, it’s all you’d need for the style of music you’ll be playing.
One other combo I’d recommend is M’s (and my) Ampeg BA-108 v2. Perfect for your needs, near your weight limit, plenty of power for the garage, and with its monitor shape you can flip it up for your ears, though everyone else can easily hear it.
My picture below shows you how I’m using the Ampeg in my music room.
Either of these combos would work well and sound great. Check ‘em out!

You are correct, dear, on all counts.
First, the TB uses the traditional Fender tone stack. Little did I know this when first purchased but I wondered why it had kind of a boomy tone. Then one of the fine fellows who also owned the head spilled the beans. Immediately I went into hyper mode and begin bringing down the bass, cranking the mids, and pulling back the highs a bit and the magic appeared.
I took those settings (and the amp) with me for the talent show last month, ran it through my Rumbler 115, and had terrific tone! BTW, the Terror Bass has been nothing short of perfect since its last trip to Atlanta back in January. Personally, I think I got a brand new board, but no matter it’s all good now and is my official gigging amp...until it blows up!
Single twelves are gaining popularity though and m y also have DI outputs. The Rumble 100, my Rocket Bass combo, and I believe the Peavey Max does too. Even 110s are beginning to show up with quality DIs.

Even though it was just bass and treble, I always liked the old school Orange (James style) tone controls better than the F/M/V bass/mid/treble.

You're absolutely right! -And don't think me and my hiatal hernia haven't thought about exactly what you're "just sayin" here! ~So I went back and listened to the two amps again, but also adding the Mini 60 Markbass this time. And none of these other amps sound as good to me as the 25w Orange Crush does... There's just a honey-like warmness to the Orange that hits me exactly in the right spot in my gut, hernia or no hernia!

The 'Tube's compression algorithms make it difficult to accurately judge the tone of anything IMO. Also, MarkBass will take a pedal much more satisfactorily than coloured amps.
I read somewhere not so long ago that the smaller Markbass combos were prone to quitting early... In fact there's one for sale on Reverb now that's not very old but no longer has decent volume, and the seller says he was told by a tech it would cost more to fix than to buy new. ~And at $500 or so it cost's plenty too, IMO! (Probably too much, as it cost's more than the PJB Dbl four.) Also I'll probably never be using a pedal on a mini 1x8 jam/practice and very small gig combo; -not when I've got my Ampeg bigger stuff for that...
I realize I seem to be talking myself into the Orange here.
-But it can't be helped, as I just get so addicted to any right-sounding bass tone I chance to hear in my head...

Oh I know what the right sounding bass tone in my head is, and the way there is paved with many tens of thousands of spacebucks ... to start ....

It is entirely maybe true the PJB BG-400 is the reincarnation of my Peavey TNT — vastly improved in every way but tanj! this is a 40 pound amp. It's the spirit of that Peavey in plain old weight ... the PJB is a 350/500 watt amp and it's still 13 pounds lighter than the 100 watt Orange. So how about that.
