I've started doubling up since one of our bass players started leaving their BA 110 at church. I send clean to the Ampeg, and distorted to the Orange. It sounded great, and I'm looking forward to playing with this setup some more.

Weird thing though. There was about a 30-40 minute gap before we played our last song, and my volume had dropped a lot, so I'm going to have to see what's going on there. It's going to be fun troubleshooting that.

Here is the non combo version of what you are doing, I tried it out of desperation since these guys turned up their stacks weekly for about six weeks or so, it put a stop to that : )

But to the point, the sound you can get going one clean amp and one effected is incomparable to mixing, the fully separate tones coming from slight (or more) distance apart makes it easier to hear yourself and you can turn down the volume in doing so, without compromising the clean low end.

Sometimes you can go through the controls and turn the knobs their full rotation, back and forth a few times. That can rub away any corrosive activity you might be having in the pot stems, etc.
Take an instrument cable and plug/unplug a few times too, to clear the jacks of same.
Couldn't hurt...

A fairly common cause is corrosion on the switch in the FX Return jack. Try an instrument cable from FX Send to FX Return to see if that fixes it. Then see the FX Return Jack Fix for Sound & Static Problems for explanation.

Ear fatigue can make you think that the volume is lower. As a result, folks want to keep turning up the volume as time progresses. Or maybe someone screwed with your knob settings when you weren’t looking.

Two weekends ago, I was with a group of Thunderbird lovers invited to take over a music store in Santa Cruz all day Saturday. I mainly played through glorious head/cab matchings (the Sunn Coliseum 300 through an Ampeg folded horn is an earthquake device), but I also played several basses through an Ampeg flip top. In the words of the Monkees, “Now I’m a believer!” What a beautiful little beast.

Sorry, I've been spending less time on TB than I used to. House and car projects have taken more of my time, and I realized that I don't pick up new combos very often, so I don't have much to say about them. Playing through my Phil Jones Double Four has me too happy to look for any others.

Along that line, I have a community band concert Tuesday night. I usually use the R40 for rehearsal, but the R100 for the concert. A little extra fullness for the room.

I miss @iagtrplyr! Our retired Fearless Leader Emeritus must be really enjoying his retirement from, ... uh, ... Fearlessly Leading and ... that other little side hustle he had ... what was it? ... Oh, yeah, ... full time school teaching of those young, little, ... ... uh, ... let's say, men and women of tomorrow!

I can't imagine him not comboing in some fashion, somewhere, somehow. Hmmm, this nosy curious mind wants to know.

Meanwhile, my Rumble Studio 40 combo has been making me heard at the occasional country/pop/rock jam and, more recently, a new church gig with a locally renowned musician and a few others (like myself) with, shall we say, great potential and occasional flashes of brilliance! Have Rumble, will travel.

That's a bit of a problem for our club: if we buy a good combo, and we love it, we have little reason to buy another, and how many times to we really want to drop by and say, "my amp still sounds killer!"?
